Homebrew Kinect app steers Chromecast streams through gestures (update: source code)

Homemade app uses Kinect to steer Chromecast streams video

Chromecast may deliver on promises of sending wire-free video to TVs, but it’s not hands-free — or at least, it wasn’t. Leon Nicholls has unveiled a homemade Kinect app for the desktop that gives him gesture-based control of videos playing through Google’s streaming stick. While there’s just two commands at this point, Nicholls hopes to open-source the code in the near future; this isn’t the end of the road. If you can’t wait that long, though, there’s a quick demonstration available after the break.

Update: A few days later, Nicholls has posted the source code for his project; you’ll need to whitelist your Chromecast for development to use it.

WSJ: Sony looking to launch online cable competitor, in talks with Viacom, Disney

Sony’s reportedly made some headway on a solution that may well convince a number of subscribers to cut their cable cords once and for all. According to The Wall Street Journal‘s usual gang of anonymous sources, the electronics giant is in talks with several high profile media organizations to help populate an internet-based service that will stream channels and offer up on-demand content. The offering, which Sony is apparently looking to launch by the end of the year, would be the realization of some long time aspirations. Viacom is apparently at top of the list of potential partners, as the home of channels like MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. That deal is said to be in the preliminary agreement stage, news that comes a few weeks after Viacom inked a deal with Twitter. According to the WSJ, Sony’s also been holding meetings with a number of other content providers like Disney, Time Warner and CBS. All parties involved have, naturally, refused to comment.

WatchESPN update for iOS adds Live Toolbar with highlights, guide and scores

WatchESPN update brings live toolbar to iPad with guides and scores

No matter how engrossed you are in a live sports stream, there’s a good chance that you’ll want a quick peek at other events. Thanks to an update to WatchESPN for iOS, that’s a simple matter. iPad owners now have access to the Live Toolbar, a ticker that shows both a channel guide, live scores and links to highlight videos. If there’s ever a lull in the middle of a game, users can even watch highlight clips side-by-side with live streams. The WatchESPN upgrade doesn’t have any major improvements in store for iPhone and iPod touch owners, but iPad-bound sports fans will have a good reason to grab the new release at the source link.

Philips wins award for as yet unannounced 65-inch 4K TV

Philips wins award for asyet unannounced 65inch 4K TV

How do we know that Philips will unveil a 65-inch 4K television at IFA on September 5th? Because that same, unannounced device has just won the European Ultra HD TV of 2013-14 award. The self-congratulatory press release mentions that the Ambilight XL-packing hardware will be offered at a “significantly lower” price point than current UHD sets, which generally retail for upwards of $7,000 for this sort of screen size. There’s no word on how much cheaper this new unit will be, but we’re hoping that Philips has updated its (slightly clunky) smart TV interface to complement the eye-watering resolution.

DNP BT Sports channel now available through Virgin TV free for some, 15 per month for others

BT is swiftly becoming a sports broadcasting force in the UK after acquiring ESPN UK and Ireland in February, then launching two of its own channels at the beginning of August. It’s now found a teammate in Virgin Media, and a newly inked, three-year deal will see BT Sport 1, 2, ESPN and their HD counterparts available through Sir Richard’s cable TV service. From today, all those channels go free for subscribers of the TV XL package, or can be added to other tiers for £15 per month. Watching through Virgin’s TV Anywhere app is currently not supported but will be “soon,” letting you gasp, shout and throw obscenities at even more screens.

Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 1265 New Generation includes its own 71channel sound module

Bang & Olufsen is all about elegant design, and it’s not about to let a home theater receiver spoil those clean looks — see its newly unveiled BeoVision 12-65 New Generation TV as an example. This refresh of last year’s BeoVision 12-65 includes its own 7.1-channel audio module, letting viewers plug surround speakers into the 65-inch plasma without a go-between box. The upgrade also brings TrueImage, which mixes the sound to fit all available speakers, and lets owners customize audio presets. Bang & Olufsen hasn’t disclosed pricing for the New Generation, but the set should reach company stores in early September.
