Instagram Verified Accounts Not Coming Anytime Soon

Instagram Verified Accounts Not Coming Anytime Soon

With the sheer user base it has generated, over 150 million, one might expect Instagram to finally start verifying high profile accounts so that followers are not deceived by fake accounts. Twitter has one of the few services to first implement the verified account system, it awarded a blue tick to users who had verified accounts, early on the privilege was only limited to celebrities and high profile individuals such as politicians, renowned journalists, etc. Facebook also followed suit with verified profiles. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, acknowledges that verified accounts have been a “highly requested feature,” but the company is not currently working on it.

Instagram’s comments come after hidden developer options were discovered in its Android APK, a “Verification” feature was found. This lead many to believe that perhaps Instagram might finally start verifying user accounts. The verified tags can be enabled right now by editing a line of code, but despite that enabling tags is possible, the feature itself isn’t live now meaning that merely enabling the tag doesn’t mean that the account gets officially verified by Instagram. The tag itself isn’t that appealing, a simple gray box with white lettered text inside. Instagram’s comments make it clear that verified accounts aren’t coming anytime soon, but by its own admission, we know that the community is actively pushing for that feature. When will Instagram finally give in? We’ll have to wait and see. [Image via TechCrunch]

Why Everyone Can Still Win in the Messaging Wars

Why Everyone Can Still Win in the Messaging Wars

Looking at the “messaging wars,” the prevailing assumption right now is that all these services are in direct competition with each other. But they aren’t. At least not yet.

Twitter reportedly toying with edit functionality

After much bemoaning and a long time waiting, Facebook users finally got access to a status editing feature back in late September. With that ability to edit typos and such in Facebook posts, it is more apparent than ever that the same functionality isn’t possible on Twitter — which, according to some anonymous sources, could […]

Twitter may soon allow you to edit tweets: anonymous employees

Twitter is working on an edit feature. Meaning you could soon be able to edit your tweets — with some caveats. You won’t be able to write a tweet, publish it, wait a few hours, and then replace the content of the tweet with entirely different and unrelated content. Twitter is still working out the […]

Twitter Reportedly Working On Letting Users Edit Their Tweets

Twitter Reportedly Working On Letting Users Edit Their TweetsEver published a tweet that you wish you had taken time to edit before putting it out there on the internet? Unfortunately as it stands, there is no way to edit a tweet, save for actually deleting the entire thing, but according to The Desk’s Matthew Keys, word has it that Twitter is currently working on an edit function that will allow users to edit their tweets “slightly”, and only once. Basically Twitter does not want the overall message of the tweet to be completely changed, and while a Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on the rumored feature, here’s how it is supposed to work.

After publishing a tweet, the edit button will appear for a brief period of time. The exact duration remains unknown, but presumably we won’t be able to edit tweets we made last week. From there theu user will be able to correct typos or any grammatical errors, or perhaps even edit a hashtag to use one that is trending at the moment, and other small changes, but like we said, the overall message will remain more or less the same. Just like Facebook, Twitter probably works on numerous projects that will help enhance or improve its service, but at the same time it does not mean it will be realized, but what do you guys think? Would you like an “edit” button for Twitter?

Twitter “Promoted” account tweets to appear in mobile timelines

Twitter is rolling out a new advertising option for mobile devices. Advertisers will now be able to send a tweet into mobile Twitter app users’ timelines with a “Promoted” tag and follow button appearing below the tweet. The option has been in beta testing mode for some time now, and today the company is extending […]

New Twitter Feature Could Show You Who Is Tweeting ‘Nearby’

New Twitter Feature Could Show You Who Is Tweeting Nearby

The folks over at Twitter are reportedly testing a new feature called “Nearby,” which as the name suggests would show you who is tweeting nearby. Apparently it wouldn’t matter if you follow those users or not, the additional Nearby timeline that will be added to the mobile apps will display all tweets being made close to your location. This feature seems like an effort to get more people to share their location on the microblogging network, which first allowed users to attach location information to their tweets back in 2010.

The Nearby feature would be quite useful for users who are looking for locationally relevant tweets, which can sometimes be quite hard to find using the “discover” tab and the microblogging network’s search feature. It would effectively fill that void, while another advantage would be that Twitter will be able to offer advertisers more precise targeting options. Pivotal Research group analyst Brian Wieser believes that it is likely that this new feature might prove to be “incrementally interesting to some advertisers.” Users location will likely not show up in the Nearby timeline if they have not opted in to attach location information with their tweets, when Twitter offered the option almost three years ago, it left it up to users to opt in if they wanted to and that hasn’t been changed to this day. When contacted by WSJ, a spokeswoman for the company declined to comment if Twitter has indeed been testing the feature. However, screenshots received by the publication from people who have used the feature point to the contrary.

Twitter “Nearby” would show local tweets on a map

Twitter has been field-testing a new native app feature that shows a map of tweets occurring near the user in real time. The feature appears as a separate column in the app and shows tweets from other users regardless of the follow relationship between the users. It’s called “Nearby”, and it could be Twitter’s next […]
