Twitter Introduces Alert System For Disasters And Emergencies

Twitter Introduces Alert System For Disasters And EmergenciesI would say that this has been a long time in coming – Twitter, for all intents and purposes, could have a whole lot more potential, and that seems to be the direction that they are headed with the latest bit of news (and no, it has nothing to do with Twitter’s IPO). Basically, Twitter claimed that they will work to assist users to receive special alerts from government agencies as well as aid agencies in the event of an emergency.

Those Twitter users who sign up will be on the receiving end of smartphone notifications via the Twitter app in addition to SMS text messages, although this does come with its very own caveat, that is, users will have to agree to hand over their cell phone numbers. The text messages received can be from any of the agencies that have already agreed to sign up with Twitter’s program. Some of those who are part of this program include the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, Tokyo’s Disaster Prevention service and the World Health Organization. Better late than never, and you cannot quite tell just how useful such an alert system would come in during those split second moments when the world around you as you know it is irrevocably changed.

Twitter scores NFL deal to showcase Sunday’s finest instant replay material

Twitter scores NFL deal to showcase Sunday's finest instant replay material

Following a similar deal in May with the NBA, Twitter’s Amplify program has landed an envy-inducing arrangement with the National Football League. As part of the new advertising partnership, the NFL will leverage Twitter to “package in-game highlights and other video content” inside sponsored tweets, which can be distributed via a marketer during games. Both Twitter and the NFL will take a slice of the profits, though neither side is talking specific terms. As of now, it sounds as if Verizon will be the “premiere sponsor,” which grants it “exclusive sponsorship rights for Amplify ads during the Super Bowl next February.” The upside? Easily tweetable instant replays. The downside? It might make you a shill. Them’s the breaks!

Twitter announces Twitter Alerts for SMS and push notifications during emergencies

Twitter announces Twitter Alerts for SMS and push notifications during emergencies

We just saw Twitter broaden its use of push notifications for tweets it thinks you might find interesting, and the social network is now also expanding their use for a more serious matter. The company has just announced a new Twitter Alerts feature, which it says will deliver “accurate information from credible organizations” during an emergency or natural disaster. To ensure you don’t miss them, those alerts will be delivered via SMS in addition to a push notification on Android or iOS, and you won’t be getting notifications from just anyone who wants to send them. At launch, only a hundred odd NGOs and governmental agencies in the U.S., Japan and Korea are able to send the alerts, although Twitter says it will be expanding that to include organizations in other countries. You can sign up to receive the alerts by going to an organization’s Alerts setup page; just add “/alerts” at the end of its Twitter URL, or find it on Twitter’s list of participating organizations.

Jimmy Fallon, Justin Timberlake Show Us How Silly #Hashtags Really Are

We think it’s safe to say hashtags has taken over pretty much all of social networking as any network worth its salt supports hashtags, with Facebook even getting in on the hashtag love. But if you read someone’s update who uses a hashtag out loud, the concept of hashtags seems a little silly, especially if you’re the kind of person to use hashtags in real world conversations. Jimmy Fallon showed just how silly this trend can be as he had a casual conversation with his friend, Justin Timberlake. (more…)

Twitter Introduces Recommended Tweets And Accounts

[Twitter Introduces Recommended Tweets And AccountsTwitter is one method to keep track of what’s hot and what’s not, but if you were to really catch on to something which is groundbreaking, plenty of work will need to be done to achieve anything of note – for instance, scrolling through tweet after tweet for hours on end. I suppose it is more of a chore than anything else, and Twitter intends to put all of that to bed with a new push notification-based recommendation system which will be based on on @MagicRecs.

That is the account which will send tailored content-suggestions depending on who you are following at the moment. In order to enable it, all you need to do is go to the Android and iOS settings menu and enable (or disable) a buzz whenever there are favorites around, where it will follow up by retweeting whatever the platform thinks that would pique your interest or curiosity. This is the ideal “self-serve tweet” function for busy folks who want to remain in the loop, but just do not have the luxury of time to go through the tweets. I have always been in the school of thought that knowledge is power, but I suppose over the years I have changed to “knowledge is potential power, applied knowledge is power.” [Press Release]

Twitter gets pushy with notifications for recommended tweets

DNP Twitter reveals push notificationbased tailored recommendation update for Android, iOS

Twitter is one of the best ways to keep abreast of breaking news, but getting caught up on anything meaningful that happened on a given day can take hours of scrolling. To combat this, the service is now rolling out a push notification-based recommendation system that builds on @MagicRecs, the account that sends tailored content-suggestions based on who you follow. A trip to the Android and iOS settings menu is all it takes to enable (or disable) a buzz when there are favorites and retweets the platform thinks you might dig. If you can’t spend all day watching your timeline but still want to stay in the loop, this could be perfect middle ground. Now if you’ll excuse us, we just got word that Emergency Puppy tweeted out a new picture.
