The Horse is a Lie: ‘horse_ebooks’ Twitter spam is performance art

The Horse is a Lie 'horse_ebooks' Twitter spam is performance art

Twitter is quite the medium. An endless source of looping GIFs, “viral” videos, and, sadly, bad advertising. Most of the latter category is quickly dismissed by the block and report spam features of Twitter, but the occasional spambot elevates its “craft” to a level of surreal bliss which begs attention. “horse_ebooks” is perhaps Twitter’s best example of that phenomenon, offering indecipherable (and delightful) missives that are heavily retweeted and always nonsensical. “How to get the best bargains in satellite,” for instance. Sadly, it looks like we’ve all been had.

What many (ourselves included) thought to be an accidentally hilarious spam account for a low-rent eBook publishing firm is actually a long-running art installation by Jacon Bakkila (a 29-year-old Buzzfeed employee). Bakkila outed the ruse this morning in an exhibit at New York City’s FitzRoy Gallery named “Horse_ebooks 2,” where Bakkila himself and two friends are answering phones all day (from 10AM to 9PM ET) and giving users a verbal taste of the content you’d normally read on…well, the horse_ebooks Twitter account (the phone number is 213-444-0102 if you’d like to call).

It’s unclear if the account will continue from here. It sounds like a no, though, as Bakkila tells The New York Times that, “The goal was not to appropriate the account but to become the account,” referencing the account’s previous Russian owner and its original use (to sell eBooks). Gawker‘s got a walkthrough of the art gallery installation right here, should you wish to dive even deeper into this madness.

China said to be unblocking sites like Facebook, Twitter and the NYT, but only in a small area of Shanghai

Given how large a mobile market China has become, and its role in gadget manufacturing globally, we sometimes forget the government of this increasingly tech-aware country still dictates what corners of the web its peoples can see. Today, the South China Morning Post reports the state has decided to unblock several foreign internet sites “considered politically sensitive,” but only in the free-trade zone of Shanghai’s Pudong New Area. According to “government sources,” the move to open access to sites including Facebook, Twitter (both of which were cut off in 2009) and The New York Times (blocked last year) is so visitors can “live and work happily in the free-trade zone.” The greater goal is to make the area more attractive to foreign companies, beyond the favorable regulatory and tax environment, of course. Furthermore, the Chinese are allegedly beckoning overseas firms to come in and “provide internet services” for the new, 30 square kilometer zone. The Great Firewall may remain firmly up for the rest of the country and its billion-odd population, but one step at a time and all that.

TV on Twitter gets a boost CBS offers intweet highlight videos, Netflix keeps spoilers out

TV-loving Twitter users just got two big upgrades to their experience. To start, CBS has reached a deal with Twitter to offer ad-supported, in-tweet highlight videos through the Amplify program. The partnership will include content from 42 shows spread across 20 of CBS’ web and TV brands. Meanwhile, Netflix has launched a new Spoiler Foiler website that prevents Twitter friends in other regions from ruining Breaking Bad. Sign in, and the page will automatically censor tweets with likely spoiler material; you can click the blacked-out text to see what you’re missing. While it’s not clear when CBS’ highlight videos will be available, Spoiler Foiler is available today.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Joins Twitter

Apple CEO Tim Cook Joins Twitter

You won’t find a lot of top Apple executives on conventional social media channels. But Apple isn’t what it used to be a few years back, significant changes have occurred under the leadership of Tim Cook. One of the biggest changes has been seen today, Tim Cook has joined Twitter. His predecessor, Steve Jobs, never ventured on the microblogging network. This is yet another thing that he is doing differently than Steve Jobs. Cook’s appearance on Twitter comes the day the company has released its two new iPhones.

As of this writing, Tim Cook’s twitter account has amassed nearly 39,000 followers. The account already been verified, so there’s no doubt in the fact that this is the real deal. Earlier today, Tim Cook visited Apple Retail Stores in Palo Alto. The first tweet has been about those visits, Cook writes that “seeing so many happy customers reminds us of why we do what we do.” The tweet was retweeted by Phil Schiller, Apple’s marketing chief, who has a verified Twitter account. It remains to be seen how Cook intends to reach out and interact with customers through this channel, though its nice to know that Apple’s CEO is now merely a tweet away.

Twitter IPO Date Expected To Be Set Before Thanksgiving

Twitter IPO Date Expected To Be Set Before Thanksgiving

Last week Twitter formally announced that it is seeking to go public, it finally made the announced after endless speculation. It has already filed a confidential S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Analysts have been wondering exactly when the Twitter IPO date will be set. Reuters, citing inside sources, claim that the microblogging network is aiming to have its shares trading on the public market before Thanksgiving, this year. Twitter is apparently planning to raise over $1 billion from its IPO. It is poised to be the biggest tech initial public offering since Facebook went public last year.

As per the report, Twitter has picked Goldman Sachs as the lead underwriter. Other financial institutions such as Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and JP Morgan are said to be involved as well. Analysts have pegged Twitter’s value at $10 billion in the past, but now folks on the Street seem to think that the company is worth roughly $15 billion. Twitter has been around for over seven years and it boasts some 200 million monthly active users. If these inside sources are telling the truth, and Twitter is able to raise a $1 billion before Thanksgiving, then come Turkey Day, Twitter will have quite a lot to be thankful for.
