Iranians’ glimpse of Facebook and Twitter freedom was due to a ‘technical failure’
Posted in: Today's ChiliYesterday, for a brief spell, ordinary Iranian citizens were able to talk to each other via Twitter and Facebook — services that had been officially banned since 2009. Today, however, they awoke to discover that the government had fully restored its anti-social blockade, with one communications official dismissing the whole episode as a “technical failure” stemming from some ISPs. That’s not necessarily true, however, and another possible explanation is that yesterday’s events were the result of a tussle between emerging pro-internet moderates like Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, and hard-liners elsewhere in the country’s power structure. Alternatively, some fear that the temporary lifting of the ban was a ploy to allow the authorities to trace would-be Facebook users. In any case, the communication official’s response to the glitch sounds ominous: “We will take action if there was a human flaw,” he’s quoted as saying. “We are probing it.”

With iOS 7 arriving tomorrow, Apple is extending some love to the owners of older iOS devices that have been left behind. New compatibility features, first spotted on Reddit, will now kick into action if you attempt to download an app that is not supported by your current firmware. Instead, the company now asks if you’d like to install the last compatible version, which, for some apps, can be over a year old. We’ve successfully installed an older version of Instagram to an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.3.3 and Twitter to an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2.1. Although Instagram was “out of date,” the last compatible version of Twitter (featured above) was version 4.3.2, and hit the App Store back on August 18th, 2012. If you’re feeling nostalgic and you’ve got an aging iPhone, iPad or iPod touch that could use a bit of exercise, Apple’s latest tweak might teach your old device some new tricks.

It hasn’t been outrightly confirmed by the government of Iran, but at least some within the nation’s borders are now able to access both Twitter and Facebook. For those keeping score, public access to the networks has been banned since 2009, shortly after the reelection of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, seems fairly convinced that Iran itself should not be restricting its citizens to information available via social channels, and a number of trusted accounts — including Rouhani himself along with The New York Times‘ Thomas Erdbrink — have tweeted in recent hours without the use of a proxy. It’s unclear whether the lift is intentional, or if it’s scheduled to remain permanently, but we’re obviously hoping it’s a sign of meaningful change.

Even with all the changes iOS 7 brings in and of itself, it seems Twitter is taking the opportunity to not only get an exterior makeover—it wants to completely overhaul the way you—and more importantly, new users—interact with it.
Scared to look at Twitter because you missed Breaking Bad last night? No problem. If you use TweetDeck, you can mute the show to live a blissful, spoiler-free day.
If you’re a fan of music, you may be using the Twitter #Music service. Twitter’s music service got an interesting update late last week that will make it more usable and enjoyable for fans. Twitter announced Friday evening that it would be displaying multiple #Music-generated playlists on Rdio. Twitter #Music will have 15 different playlists […]
Twitter #Music might’ve released a Spotify app first, but that doesn’t mean it’s forgotten you folks on Rdio: you can now listen to all the tracks that rank on the social network’s charts from within the internet radio’s website or app. The songs are segregated into genre playlists — just head over to the Twitter #Music station linked below to access and subscribe to them if you’re inclined to keep abreast of what’s trending. If what’s hot with Twitter users don’t exactly suit your ears, however, you can always discover new music via Autoplay or take advantage its Station Tuning feature instead.
