Twitter brings a conversation focused update to the iPhone, Android and web

Twitter has announced a conversation related update today. This one is being released for the Twitter.com website as well as the iPhone and Android apps. The short version here is that conversations should now be easier to follow. And as a side effect, easier to join in on should you have something to say on […]

Twitter Tweaks Conversations View On Apps And Website

Twitter today announced that it has released update iOS and Android apps with a new conversations view, the same update has been made on twitter.com as well. This interface change will make it easier for users to view entire conversations on the microblogging network. Entire conversations between users will now be displayed instead of single tweets being displayed at a time. A vertical blue line will indicate non-chronological tweets in conversations.

The most recent three tweets from any conversation are now shown on the home timeline. To see more, users can tap a tweet to see all replies, including those from people who don’t follow that particular user. Sharing conversations has been made easier as well. From twitter.com, conversations can be shared over email with people whether or not they are on Twitter. From the iOS and Android apps, individual tweets can be shared over email. Users can also share via direct message on Android. Twitter has also made it easier to report individual tweets for abuse or spam directly from the Android app and the website. This feature is already available on the iPhone and will rollout gradually for Android and the website. Twitter app experience for entry-level Android smartphones has also been improved.

Yup, the NYTimes and Twitter Outages Started With Simple Phishing

As we strongly suspected earlier, the hackers that briefly took over the Twitter and New York Times domains yesterday didn’t use brute force or fancy hacks to get in. The LATimes reports that the Syrian Electronic Army used phishing emails to get username and password credentials for several employees Melbourne IT, the registrar for both NYTimes.com and Twitter.com. Be careful what emails you click!

Twitter acquires Trendrr to bolster real-time coverage of TV trends

Twitter acquires TV analysis firm Trendrr

If it wasn’t already clear that Twitter is serious about monitoring TV trends, the company just proved it by acquiring Trendrr. The deal gives Twitter new tools for both tracking social network activity during TV broadcasts and delivering that information to advertisers and media producers. While the two companies aren’t specific regarding their plans, Trendrr is scaling back its operations: its Curatorr service will keep going, but it will stop taking customers for its Trendrr.TV engagement tracker. It will be some time before we see the results of the acquisition, but the increasingly tighter links between Twitter activity and TV suggest that the buyout could prove worthwhile in the long run.

Twitter now displays conversations in chronological order (video)

Twitter update streamlines conversations, displays them in chronological order video

Twitter has always been a great place to discuss hard-hitting news (like Miley Cyrus’ puzzling evolution), but following conversations can feel a bit like a mining expedition. The company has taken note, and a new update to the website, iOS and Android apps — available today — makes engaging in conversations on Twitter a much more intuitive process. Now, the first tweet in a chain will show up on your timeline above the replies, allowing you to read the conversation in chronological order. Up to two subsequent related tweets will be connected to the first by a vertical blue line; for lengthy conversations, you can continue reading with a simple tap. Syrian Electronic Army Reported Takes Over Twitter’s Domain Registration

Syrian Electronic Army Reported Takes Over Twitters Domain Registration

Some of you guys might have heard a while back that the website, The Onion, was hacked by a group calling themselves the Syrian Electronic Army. Now it looks like the group is back again, and this time they are claiming that they have taken over Twitter’s domain registration. For now it appears to be true as a Whois lookup on Twitter’s domain name reveals evidence pointing at the Syrian Electronic Army. This includes the admin’s name which reads “SEA SEA”, and the admin’s email which points towards “sea@sea.sy”.

In fact the Syrian Electronic Army actually tweeted their exploits, “Hi @Twitter, look at your domain, its owned by #SEA Syrian Electronic Army Reported Takes Over Twitters Domain Registrationalong with a screenshot of the Whois listing. According to the folks at Gizmodo who reached out to Twitter, Twitter responded by saying that they are “looking into it”. We’re not sure if the hackers plan to do something more nefarious or if they’re merely showing off their hacking skills, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled and update you guys as more information becomes available.

DNS hack takes The New York Times offline (update: Twitter images were affected too)

DNS hack brings The New York Times offline

For the second time this month, The New York Times has gone offline. This time around, the Syrian Electronic Army is likely to blame, with a Domain Name System (DNS) hack crippling the news org’s online operation. The NYT’s web servers are still online, however, so the publication has begun tweeting out direct IP links to recent articles. Meanwhile, Twitter itself may be vulnerable. Hackers have managed to modify some of the registration data, including the contact email address, suggesting an attack on the social site may be imminent.

Update: According to a tweet from the paper’s official account, it’s temporarily publishing updates at news.nytco.com.

Update 2: Twitter has confirmed the twimg.com domain used for images and photos was among those affected. According to the post, the original domain record has been restored and no user information was affected.
