Twitter #Music for iOS adds genres for more targeted filtering, thankfully omits rap-rock

Twitter #Music for iOS adds Genres, because raprock should standalone

Twitter’s still tweaking its #Music app for iOS, currently the only mobile platform that’s privy to the discovery service. Previously, users could only toggle through four categories (i.e., Popular, Emerging, Suggested and #NowPlaying) to stumble upon artists and tracks of interest. But as of today, Twitter’s updating the app’s filter, adding genres, like Metal, Country, Dance and all the predictably labeled rest to Charts so you can “get hip-hoppy” (it’s in the changelog) or get your Bieb on or make jazz hands to the sounds of that Rihanna. The new version 1.1 update also lets users now authenticate Rdio from within the app — no more linking out to Safari — and irons out some known bugs, too. If you’ve already downloaded the app, then just sit back and wait for it to update. First timers can head to the source below for to test out the Twitter-made music assist.

Bing Translator comes to Twitter’s official Windows Phone app

Automatic translation comes to Twitter's official Windows Phone app

It’s not every day we see Windows Phone being used to launch a major new feature, but Twitter has done just that. An update to its official app has just enabled automatic translation if you happen to be reading a person’s tweet that isn’t in English. The tweet isn’t translated in your actual timeline; instead you have to manually click through, but that’s nothing to complain about. Microsoft’s Bing Platform, also released yesterday, is likely being used as the backend, so this feature could very well come to Twitter’s official apps on Android and iOS (not to mention a whole range of other apps) in the near future.

Twitter update for BlackBerry brings image cards to older phones

Twitter update for BlackBerry brings photo cards to older phones

Not all BlackBerry owners are ready for new phones just yet, but many of them still want to browse their Twitter feeds as efficiently as possible. A Twitter 4.2 update launching today should keep those users satisfied: the release brings image cards to BlackBerry OS 5 and up, letting those on older devices peek at photos in the timeline. The upgraded version also populates that timeline with more details about the tweets themselves, and it suggests people to follow when looking at profiles. If those additions are enough to fight off the urge for a hardware upgrade, the new Twitter app is available at the source link.

Twitter wants to make a ‘DVR mode’ for live TV events, offer delayed Twitter streams

Social media is very much about keeping up with what’s happening right now — but not everybody consumes live media simultaneously. What happens when you watch a time-shifted sporting event four hours late, but still want to see what your peers had to say in the heat of the moment? Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has an idea: social media DVR. Speaking at a moderated panel at at the Center for Technology Innovation, Costolo envisioned a system that would allow users to jump back in time and look at a snapshot of the social network at a specific moment.

“It would be nice to see things like a graphic of spikes in the conversation,” he said. “And be able to scroll back to that time and see what happened at that particular moment.” The CEO continued to suggest that such a feature could be designed around planned events, describing it as “Twitter in a DVR mode.” Although it was suggested that these features are in testing, Costolo stopped short of saying if they were actually something users could expect to see soon. Naturally, we reached out to the company for further comment, but haven’t heard back just yet. Still, it’s at least clear that the company hasn’t abandoned its television-based ambitions.

Twitter reportedly prepping location-based advertisements
