According to a report published today by The New York Times, starting next week Comedy Central will kick off its five day comedy festival. The festival won’t be held at comedy clubs or other similar venues, this five day festival will be hosted almost entirely on Twitter. Comedians will make use of Twitter for posting jokes, they’ll be using the #ComedyFest hashtag for this purpose. Video snippets carrying the same hashtag will be uploaded to Vine. Twitter launched Vine back in January, snippets of up to six seconds can be uploaded to this service.
Famous comedians such as Carl Reiner, Amy Schumer, Mel Brooks and others will be taking part in this festival. Steve Agee is scheduled to host a ‘Vine dining’ party on Tuesday, he will be telling stories in six second videos. Comedy Central’s comedy festival kicks off with a panel discussion between Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Judd Apatow held in Los Angeles, California. The channel will also release a free, albeit add-supported, app next month. Titled CC: Stand-Up, the app will let users watch comedians performing various routines. It has been designed to look and feel like a cable channel that is devoted to stand-up comedy.

While the 2012 NFL Draft was marred online by insider parties using Twitter to announce picks before television broadcasts could so so themselves, sources this week are making clear a new expected etiquette of those present at the event. The word being used this week by news officials is “speculation”: before the NFL commissioner makes an announcement, mum’s the word. Even so, hard-and-fast rules on this situation appear to be able to be bent, just so long as they’re not broken.
It would appear that ESPN is at the tip of this year’s reign-in of “early” news flashes, with several heads noting several different sides of the story this week. ESPN’s Adam Schefter spoke with the Sherman Report about revealing key information on Twitter, saying that “run of the mill” picks will not be touched by him. Quarterback picks or “bold moves,” as he put it, will have no restrictions – Twitter action will continue in that regard.
“Basically. During the second round, only one or two picks are headline worthy. If it is the headline of that day, and I’m fortunate enough to get that pick, I’m going to report it.
I am almost certain–not to put words in someone’s mouth–that the NFL has to spoken to ESPN and ESPN has told me to be more selective about what I’m tweeting in advance. I am trying to be as considerate as possible and [not] tweet everything we’re getting, but I am going to tweet the headline-making items.” – Schefter
The actual dialog between Schefter, his boss Seth Markman, and possibly the NFL itself is not known – what he’s made plain is the fact that someone higher up than Schefter would rather he didn’t use Twitter to speak about any Draft picks at all – at least not until they’re publicly available through the NFL’s own channels. The difference between the NFL posting information, ESPN speaking this information on a television broadcast, and a Twitter post can be a matter of minutes – but sometimes that’s a whole lot longer than one would expect – and a lot more important.
What’s your opinion on the Twitter situation here with the NFL Draft? Are you a follower of those sources that find out picks before they’re made official through the NFL itself? Let us know if you want to see picks first on Twitter, if you’d rather watch them on television, or if you want the NFL to speak directly to you with a telegram!

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime had some nice things to say about the company’s 3DS’ game sales over its two years of being available recently, and we’re sure he’ll have nothing but good things to say over a new feature that is currently available only in Japan.
Nintendo of Japan has released a new web tool that can be used within the Nintendo 3DS’ Internet browser to be able to share screenshots onto Twitter and Tumblr. The feature requires the game to first be compatible with the feature, which currently is only available to be used in Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Tomodachi Collection: New Life. This isn’t the first time Nintendo has made sharing screenshots possible as they already had a similar feature available for the Wii, although it certainly couldn’t be considered an easy task as it required storing screenshots on an SD card, to then be uploaded through a computer. You might not have heard of BERG before, but they are an UK-based design consultancy whose claim to fame would be their innovative creation, The Little Printer. Well, staying put in a single place or resting on your laurels is never the way to go if you want to maintain a competitive edge. This could very well be why the BERG Cuckoo Clock has proven itself to be a new as well as highly original concept by working alongside the hugely influential social media network known as Twitter.
#FLOCK would come across as a limited edition wirelessly connected clock that will rely on the BERG Cloud development kit which will react to the activity of an individual Twitter account. The clock is said to be awarded to ten different brands or companies who have managed to show just how creative they can be when it comes to using Twitter, by offering a physical presence to their virtual activity. Comprising of a quartet of houses, three of them will hold brightly colored birds (fake birds, of course, and we aren’t even talking about stuffed ones) that react to Twitter notifications including a new follower, a retweet or an @message. The reactions vary in terms of popping out differently, making this a truly unique cuckoo clock. Twitter-enabled devices can be commercially produced or built from ground up via DIY just in case you were wondering.

Yesterday, several of CBS’s Twitter accounts were hacked, including its main account, and its accounts for 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, and CBS Denver. The hackers got into the account and tweeted a series of things relating to President Obama and the United States being in cahoots with Al-Qaeda. The tweets also had links that led users to malware-infested sites. While CBS was able to regain access to its accounts, it was unable to figure out who was behind the attacks, until now.
The Syrian Electronic Army, the same group that hacked 3 of the BBC’s Twitter accounts, claimed credit for hacking into CBS’s accounts. In a statement through its official website, the Syrian Electronic Army also claimed credit for hacking into an account belonging to a radio station in San Diego. The group published a screenshot of one of the accounts that it had hacked. The groups stated that they used the hacked accounts and “published through it the truth”.
CBS and BBC weren’t the only victims of the Syrian Electronic Army. The group also hacked NPR’s Twitter accounts, the website and Twitter belonging to the Human Rights Watch, and a blog used by Reuters. On its website’s bio, the group states that they are trying to fight against the campaigns “led by the Arab media and Western on our Republic by broadcasting fabricated news about what is happening in Syria”.
Twitter has proceeded to block all Twitter accounts associated with the Syrian Electronic Army, however the group continues to make new ones. There have been several account hacks in the past. Recently Colin Powell’s Facebook had been hacked by the same hacker who obtained personal emails from members of the Bush family. It may be wise for these social networks to implement a two-factor authentication feature to better defend themselves from these type of situations in the future.

The Weekly Roundup for 04.15.2013
Posted in: Today's ChiliYou might say the week is never really done in consumer technology news. Your workweek, however, hopefully draws to a close at some point. This is the Weekly Roundup on Engadget, a quick peek back at the top headlines for the past seven days — all handpicked by the editors here at the site. Click on through the break, and enjoy.
CBS confirmed that three of its Twitter accounts, including that of popular show 60 Minutes, were hacked. It is largely believed that the accounts were compromised by Syrian Electronic Army, though they haven’t been officially named as the perpetrators. Some of the tweets sent out from these accounts do point at Syrians, take for example this tweet posted on 60 Minutes account saying: The Syrian army’s fight is your fight. The Syrian army fights for all humanity. The Syrian Electronic Army has previously, reportedly, compromised Twitter accounts of NPR, Reuters and BBC.
The 60 Minutes account was back under CBS control soon after being compromised, but the hackers once again took over it and as of now this particular account has been suspended. Through its primary Twitter account CBS News had confirmed that the account of 48 Hours and of its local Denver affiliate were also compromised. The compromised accounts were mainly used for spreading propaganda, users should avoid clicking on links posted in these tweets as they may lead to sites containing malware. It is not known as of now when these accounts will be back online.

It looks like CBS is the latest victim in a series of Social Network account hacks that seem to be prevalent this year. Today, CBS stated that several of its Twitter accounts, including 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, CBSDenver, and its official Twitter account were all compromised earlier today. The hackers used the accounts and tweeted things like, “General Dempsey calls for #Obama’s arrest under new anti-terror laws #48hours”.
The hackers also provided links in the tweets that led to malware infected sites. A couple of the tweets took jabs at President Obama, while others suggested that the United States was in cahoots with Al-Qaeda. CBS quickly regained access to the accounts thanks to help of Twitter. It was quick to delete the tweets, and apologized to its followers for the immature activity that took place.
CBS is just one of many victims this year that have been targeted by hackers. Earlier in March, hackers got a hold of Colin Powell’s Facebook page, and posted several, vulgar comments geared towards himself and the Bush family. The hacker was the same hacker who got a hold of personal emails from the entirety of the Bush family. Later on in the month, 3 of BBC’s Twitter accounts were hacked by a group who called themselves the Syrian Electronic Army.
Then there were also those funny account hacks, like back in February when Burger King’s account was taken over and transformed into a McDonalds’s account, with its profile bio saying, “Burger King USA Official Twitter account. Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped =[.” Considering all of the recent events of Twitter accounts being hacked, maybe it’ll be wise for Twitter to implement a two-factor authentication system.

Posted in: Today's Chili Twitter hacks are an unfortunate reality of everyday social media life. Today, it was CBS’s 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, and CBS Denver accounts that took the hit and started dishing out some linkbait-y tweets with a virus-laiden garnish. Careful what you click. More »
