New Nexus 7 UK pre-orders now live with mid-September arrival

Yesterday, we saw the official unveiling of the new Nexus 7, and it’ll be arriving in the US on July 30. However, while the tablet would be coming to the UK, there was no word on when that would happen, exactly. According to a couple of UK listings, though, the Nexus 7 will arrive in the UK on September 13, and pre-orders are now live.

Both Currys and PC World have the new Nexus 7 up for pre-order, priced at £199.99 for the 16GB version and £239.99 for the 32GB flavor. Both the tablets list a September 13 release date, but folks in the UK are able to pre-order the tablet right now at either one of these retail establishments.

Obviously, this is a long wait for UK folks to get their hands on the new tablet — almost a month and a half late, to be exact. While consumers in the US have to wait a few days for release, they have it easy, while those located across the pond will have to wait it out for a significant amount of time.

Obviously, though, the date they have listed may be subject to change, but seeing as how both Currys and PC World were launch partners for the original Nexus 7, we’d be surprised if the listings were wrong. There’s also no sign of a 4G Nexus 7 model, so it could be that an LTE variant is an even longer way off.

The new Nexus 7 sports the same 7-inch display as before, but comes with a much higher resolution of 1920×1200, making it the most pixel-dense display of any tablet currently on the market. The new device also runs on a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and comes with 2GB of RAM on board.

New Nexus 7 up for pre-order at UK retailers, but not expected until mid September

Nexus 7 up for preorder at UK retailers, but not expected til midSeptember

Those who observed yesterday’s Nexus 7 shenanigans from across the Atlantic may well be wondering when it’d all become relevant to them, and it seems we have the first hint of an answer. Currys and PC World now have active pre-order pages for the Google tablet, with the 16GB version priced at £199.99 and the 32GB variant at £239.99, and with an availability date of September 13th. It’s possible that this time window could change, of course, but it still sounds like quite a wait.

LG inks Sky deal for exclusive Now TV streaming access on smart TVs

LG inks Sky deal for exclusive Now TV streaming access on smart TVs

When LG invited us to an event in (thankfully) sunny London, we thought we’d be hearing about 4K, curved OLED and huge price tags. It wasn’t about hardware at all, in fact, as LG announced it has partnered with Sky to add the Now TV movie and sport streaming service to its smart TV line-up. Starting in August, Now TV content will be exclusive to LG sets for “a minimum of 12 months.” Those purchasing new home entertainment kit will get three months of free access to Now TV’s movie catalogue, as well as three free 24-hour sports passes. If you’re in possession of an LG smart TV from this year or last, or a 2013 era Blu-ray player or home cinema system, you may miss the introductory offer but will still be able to download the Now TV app. The only kicker is that Now TV doesn’t currently broadcast HD content, so don’t expect those movies to pop on your 84-inch 4K monster.

Xbox One first-party games priced at £50 in the UK, versus $60 in the US

Xbox One firstparty games priced at 50 in UK, versus $60 in the US

Take the $59.99 official price (before tax) for first-party Xbox One titles in the States, run it through your favorite currency convertor and you get something like £39. Add in Royal Baby taxes (aka VAT), incomplete globalization and whatever else, and it seems the final amount for UK buyers comes to £49.99 — a price tag that has appeared on games like Dead Rising 3 and Forza Motorsport 5 over at Microsoft’s UK web store. It’s not a surprising figure, and not too dissimilar to current Xbox 360 RRPs either, but it still seems high in a world that has seen Steam’s sales model bring prices down for PC gamers. Anyway, maybe it’s better not to get into all that again.

Amazon UK adds £10 minimum spend for free delivery, except for movies, books, music and games

Amazon adds 10 minimum spend for UK supersaver delivery, except for movies, books, music and games

From today, Amazon customers in the UK will be required to shell out a minimum of £10 ($15) before they’re entitled to free Super Saver delivery — but there are some big exceptions. Purchases of DVDs, Books, Blu-Ray discs, CDs, video games and software won’t be part of the new scheme, and in an email, Amazon specifically suggests that you pick up a paperback alongside a new HDMI cable to get around the rule. There’s no word on if we’ll see a change in the company’s US policy, but if you see some delighted accountants wandering around Amazon’s Seattle HQ, let us know.

UK government receptive to bill that would pardon Alan Turing

UK government supports bill pardoning Alan Turing

Many in the UK recognize Alan Turing’s contributions to computing as we know it, but attempts to obtain a pardon for the conviction that tragically cut short his career have thus far been unsuccessful. There’s a new glimmer of hope, however: government whip Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon says that the current leadership has “great sympathy” for a bill that would pardon Turing. As long as no one calls for amendments, the legislation should clear Parliament’s House of Lords by late October and reach the House of Commons soon afterward. While there’s no guarantee that the measure will ultimately pass, the rare level of endorsement suggests that Turing’s name could soon be cleared.

DPD to let UK shoppers track home deliveries in real time (video)

DPD to let UK shoppers track home deliveries in real time video

If you’re like us, you want a better sense of where your packages are than “on truck for delivery.” So does the UK’s DPD, apparently, as it’s rolling out a Follow My Parcel service that will let online shoppers track their goods in real time. The feature gives customers a web link that lets them see both the delivery vehicle’s live position and a package’s place in the queue. The new system is accurate enough to narrow the delivery window to 15 minutes — in theory, recipients won’t be caught off-guard again. There’s also options for giving the shipment to a neighbor or rescheduling the shipment altogether. Follow My Parcel should be available through Interlink Express on August 5th, and British retailer ASOS already plans to offer the service to its customers.

HTC One mini launching on almost all UK carriers around August 9th

HTC One Mini launching on all UK carriers from August

We’ve reached out to all of the usual suspects, and only one of them hasn’t stuck a thumb up and winked when we’ve asked if it’ll be carrying HTC’s “diminutive” new smartphone. O2, EE, Vodafone, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse have all confirmed that they’ll carry the One mini, while ThreeUK has yet to get back to us. There’s no solid information on how much the device will cost on a monthly or one-off basis, but Carphone Warehouse is already accepting sim-free pre-orders for a very plausible £380. That same retailer is also saying that the phone is due to arrive on August 9th, but we’ll take that assertion with a pinch of environmentally-friendly salt.
