As promised by the free-to-view UK TV service, YouView’s finally launched its dedicated Android app. Offering the ability to browse a full week of program listings for its collection of over 70 TV and radio channels, the app can also remotely record TV shows. With the iOS version, you can connect up to five devices, with YouView promising it’ll run on “most Android 2.3 devices” with special optimization done for the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II, LG Nexus 4, HTC One S and, er, Galaxy Ace. CBS may have teamed up with Netflix in the US to satisfy those of us with an Enterprising bent, but the company has taken a different tack in the UK and Germany. Instead, the firm has signed a deal with Lovefilm to bring CBS and Showtime-owned shows to Amazon’s streaming network. The press release promises that users will be able to watch classic Star Trek, Voyager, The Good Wife, Dexter and Californication instantly, although a brief check of the UK site reveals that you may need to wait a short while more before you can immerse yourself in the Delta quadrant / Hank Moody’s psyche.

National Archive documents recently released show that the UK government’s very own UFO department, which had reported on sightings for over 50 years, was shut down three years ago. The department apparently never revealed any “potential threats” to the country, so the Ministry of Defence closed both the hotline and email address that fielded the public’s sightings of UFOs. A civil servant briefed the current defence minister, Bob Ainsworth, saying: “The level of resources diverted to this task is increasing in response to a recent upsurge in reported sightings, diverting staff from more valuable defence-related activities.” The recently released files also covered some of the sightings reported from across the UK in 2009, which included, perhaps unsurprisingly, Stonehenge.

The CEO position is usually the last rung on the career ladder — after that, it’s either retirement or a less-than-graceful ouster. It’s not the end for BT CEO Ian Livingston, however, as he’s moving to the even bigger leagues of government. The executive will step down in September to accept a role as the UK’s Minister of State for Trade and Investment. The company’s current head of retail, Gavin Patterson, will take the reins from that point on. Livingston leaves BT mostly better off than when he took the lead in 2008: questionable patent lawsuits notwithstanding, the telecom giant has been forward-thinking with its plans for ultra-fast fiber and LTE service. Let’s just hope that Patterson can deal with fiercer competition.
