Nokia’s Lumia 2520 tablet exclusive to John Lewis in the UK from December 4th

UK-centric news is plentiful today while America busies itself with feasts and football. One such announcement concerns the launch of Nokia’s first tablet, the Lumia 2520, which will go on sale December 4th exclusively at John Lewis and affiliate stores. Running Windows RT 8.1, the colorful 10.1-inch tablet will cost £400, while the optional keyboard accessory will retail for an additional £150 when it becomes available “in the coming weeks” (although we can’t say we were enamored with the typing experience in our review). Curiously, John Lewis’ monopoly means you’ll have to go to extra lengths to make use of the 2520’s LTE radio by procuring a 4G data-only SIM from EE or O2. Thus, you also can’t take advantage of any carrier subsidies. There’s no word on exactly when the exclusivity period will end, but if you just have to have one, you know exactly where to go.

VuTV brings 13 more channels to the UK’s Freeview TV service for £7 per month

Brits can’t really complain about Freeview TV since it comes at no recurring charge, but it doesn’t stop them tiring of the channel selection. Those who also aren’t interested in signing on the dotted line with the likes of Virgin, Sky or YouView now have another way to perhaps cure their programming apathy with VuTV. Launched today, the new service adds 13 channels to compatible Freeview-equipped TVs or set-top boxes for a fee of £7 per month (no extended commitment necessary). VuTV manages to add these new channels via a selection screen hosted within a single Freeview channel, Inception-style. While it sounds like a fair deal, we’re far from convinced it’s worth the money, unless you’re into MTV-made reality shows or have a house full of children to keep entertained. Then again, Comedy Central is a good pick-up on VuTV’s part, and you can always take the two-week trial before throwing down any cash. Full channel list after the break.

BT to broadcast and stream live NBA games in the UK

New York Knicks v Los Angeles Clippers

BT has landed quite a few major sports broadcasting deals as of late, including its buyout of ESPN’s British and Irish channels back in February. Today, it’s extending its athletic empire with an exclusive arrangement to air NBA games in Ireland and the UK. The agreement will see BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN broadcast as many as seven live games per week, with some of them streaming through BT Sport’s website and mobile apps. While there isn’t a huge market for basketball in the country, the pact will make life much easier for diehard UK fans and American ex-pats — they won’t have to buy online passes or otherwise bend over backwards to keep up with their favorite NBA teams.

Dual-SIM HTC One with expandable storage comes to the UK

Just days after it unveiled a second gold One, HTC is releasing another variant of its Android flagship in an attempt to boost sales in the UK. Today, the company announced the availability of the HTC One Dual SIM, which you may already know as HTC One 802w. Just like it’s Chinese counterpart, the device comes with a removable back for access to dual SIM slots and, more importantly, a microSD slot. That means you can switch between SIMs to receive calls and also fall back on up to 64GB of external storage, should you max-out the One’s 32GB of internal storage. The dual-SIM functionality does come at a price, however, as the latest One variant does not support LTE — otherwise the specs remain unchanged. If you can overlook that, the One Dual SIM is up for pre-order on HTC’s official store for £495 ($809), with it likely to head to a “number of networks and retailers” in the near future.

Xbox One owners report compatibility problems with UK TV providers

Nothing tests a stiff upper lip like a next-gen console launch. Having already been spooked by inaccurate pricing on the PlayStation Network, some Brits are now discovering that the Xbox One‘s heavily promoted TV functions aren’t readily compatible with their set-top boxes. Whether on Freeview, Virgin or Sky, users’ efforts to route TV output through the Xbox One’s HDMI passthrough port are apparently resulting in “juddery” and unwatchable video — perhaps because the Xbox One defaults to 60 frames per second while most UK hardware sticks to the PAL standard of 50Hz. In turn, if they’re forced to give on using passthrough, they also have to miss out on the use of Kinect voice control to start watching TV, change the volume or “snap” TV side-by-side with an app.

Ironically, one UK service that has made a particular point of never supporting the Xbox One — namely, YouView — may now offer the smoothest experience of the lot (albeit without any EPG integration), as its box seems to be more comfortable outputting a compatible signal. That won’t be much help to others, however, so we’ve asked Microsoft’s PR if there’s any progress towards a fix, and in the meantime you might want to try a possible workaround from a reader at HDTVTest.

Nokia Lumia 1520 reaches the UK on December 6th, starting at £80 on a £38 per month plan

Nokia Lumia 1520

Brits who’ve been yearning for the Nokia Lumia 1520 will soon get their chance. The supersized Windows Phone is now due to reach the UK on December 6th, when it will be available through O2 at retail and Vodafone through the web. Third-party retailers like Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u will also stock the 6-inch flagship. While the exact pricing will vary, Vodafone will sell the phone for £80 when it’s attached to a £38 per month plan and a 2-year contract; it will be available for free if you subscribe to a beefy £47 plan. The 1520 will undoubtedly be one of the more expensive handsets in the country, then, but it may be worthwhile for those who want one of Nokia’s most powerful devices.

Batmobile replica is street-legal with working flamethrower

A fully functional replica of the Batmobile from the 1989 Michael Keaton Batman film will be going up for auction Nov. 30. Many replicas have been made of the various models of Batmobile, but none with quite this level of authenticity. For starters, the flamethrower, afterburner, nine-inch-rise hydraulics and remote start all work. Oh, and […]

Is Sony prepping a PlayStation 4 and PS Vita bundle for the UK?

It’s the hardware marriage we all assumed (and hoped) would eventually happen. A report over on gaming site MCV claims Sony is planning to offer an ‘Ultimate Edition’ PlayStation 4 bundle that would include its portable console, the PS Vita, as a pack-in for the UK. Further corroborating this rumor is an alleged image of the bundle (pictured above) said to be featured in MCV‘s upcoming print edition. If this turns out to be true, Brits could very well see the next-gen PlayStation combo hit retail in time for the holidays, although there’s no word on how much it’ll cost. Aside from being a match made in gamer heaven, the purported move is somewhat of a no-brainer for Sony, given the PS4’s much touted Remote Play functionality (which streams next-gen games to the handheld) and the Vita’s less-than-stellar install base. With about a month to go before holiday mania sets in, we should know sooner rather than later just how real this bundle fantasy is and whether it’s also destined for US shores.

Shorter and simpler .uk domains to launch in 2014

If you didn’t think UK domain names could get any shorter, they soon will be. In an announcement today, the UK’s domain registry said it will soon launch its simpler .uk domain in a bid to remain cool with businesses and bloggers. While new registrations are encouraged, ten million existing customers (that have registered either a .co.uk or .org.uk address) won’t need to rush: they’ll have five years to claim a shorter version of their current address. News of the .uk address comes less than a week after ICANN gave London the go-ahead to offer .london addresses to “businesses, organisations and individuals”. If all of this UK-related domain news is too much for you to handle, come back in February 2014 — that’s when we’ll get a definitive .uk launch date.
