Snowden leak suggests UK was spying on Belgian telecom

Snowden leaks suggest UK was spying on Belgian telecom, not NSA

When Belgian prosecutors suggested that Belgacom was the target of foreign espionage, many blamed the NSA — it has a history of snooping on other countries, after all. Those accusations may have been off the mark, however. Der Spiegel has revealed documents leaked by Edward Snowden which hint that the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) was responsible. The intelligence agency reportedly tricked key Belgacom staff into visiting a malware-loaded website that hijacked their PCs. GCHQ could then spy on smartphones, map the network and investigate secure VPN connections. Neither Belgacom nor Belgium has responded to this latest Snowden leak, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the apparent evidence speeds up their investigation.

iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c join Three UK’s lineup this Friday with unlimited 4G data

iPhone 5s and 5c join Three UK's lineup this friday with unlimited 4G data

‘C,’ it turns out, is for color — not cookie, or cheap or China. Yes, the pretty in pastel iPhone 5c, Sir Jony Ive’s repackaged ode to Apple’s last-gen iPhone, as well as the iPhone 5s will be joining Three UK’s lineup starting this Friday. The operator will be offering both iDevices on a two-year plan for an initial upfront payment of £49 and £99, respectively. That means you’ll still have to pony up a monthly fee for either device, the amount of which depends on the particulars of your voice and data package. Regardless of which you opt for, however, the privilege to surf Three UK’s (not yet live) 4G network is included at no additional cost. And it’s unlimited.

Google promises UK regulator that Waze will remain separate pending review

Google promises UK regulator that Waze will remain separate pending review

When Google acquired Waze, it said that it would keep the newly purchased company at arm’s length. Well, we now know exactly how separate Waze will be, at least for the foreseeable future. Google has promised the UK’s Office of Fair Trading that it won’t touch Waze’s business operations while the British regulator determines its authority over the deal. The search giant has also offered to warn if there are any substantial changes in staff, business plans or customer numbers for both itself and Waze. The terms may not last forever — if the OFT decides to review the acquisition, it can reject Google’s offer. For now, though, Waze will (mostly) remain a distinct entity.

Vodafone’s first own-brand LTE smartphone for the UK leaked… in America

Vodafones first ownbrand LTE phone for the UK gets leaked in America

The FCC may be guardians of America’s cellular devices, but the commission’s staffers don’t care too much for a company’s secret release plans. The latest bundle of documents has revealed that the Vodafone Smart 4G has been passed fit for human consumption over in the US of A. Given that Vodafone doesn’t have a branded presence in the colonies and the handset runs LTE Band 7, it’s likely that this one’s destined for a life in the UK. Presumably this re-branded Coolpad 8860U will be sold like the other Vodafone Smart range — as a budget option for Brits who want 4G without having to pay £21-or-more per month to get a Lumia 625 for nothing.

UK government to begin testing mobile emergency alerts

UK government to begin testing SMS emergency alerts

UK folks could soon be made aware of local emergencies via their mobile phone after the government announced plans to test its new alert system later this year. With support from O2, Vodafone and EE, around 50,000 residents across Yorkshire, Suffolk and Glasgow will be subjected to individual tests which will assess the Cabinet Office’s SMS and cell broadcast early warning systems and measure the public’s response. Currently, there’s no word on whether UK citizens will get to enjoy iOS support for emergency notifications, like their American and Japanese counterparts, but the Cabinet Office plans to publish its findings in early 2014 — that’s if the UK hasn’t already been enveloped by a massive fog cloud.

Grand Theft Auto V pre-orders ship early, Amazon UK learns crime doesn’t pay

Amazon hijacks GTA V shipment embargo

Amazon could find itself struck off Rockstar Games’ Christmas card list after it delivered Grand Theft Auto V preorders to customers in the UK in advance of its September 17th release. Some customers reported receiving shipping notifications over the weekend, with additional reports suggesting the game had made it to some doorsteps as early as Saturday. Games Industry says that the company is already investigating these early sales, although we wouldn’t put it past some silent, rogue type like Claude from GTA 3. Microsoft is reportedly banning Xbox Live accounts belonging to those that shared early footage of the game, so if you did receive an early copy, make sure to refrain from sharing your impressive bank heists on social media and video sites until release day.

London museum turns 3D-printed Liberator guns into works of art

London museum turns 3Dprinted Liberator gun into a work of art

Home to some of the world’s rarest pieces of art, London’s Victoria & Albert (V&A) museum has just added a modern, yet controversial piece to its collection: the world’s first 3D-printed weapon. The museum has managed to get its hands on the two prototype Liberator pistols which were successfully fired by their creator Cody Wilson back in May, offering London’s culture lovers the chance to view the original $25 do-it-yourself plastic firearm in all its glory. The gun has come under fire for supposedly aiding terrorist threats, leading the State Department to demand Defense Distributed take down online copies of the Liberator’s schematics. The V&A could have simply printed their own models, downloading the blueprints like 100,000 other people, but Wilson claims the originals add a sense of authenticity. One of the models is so authentic, it’ll go on show with half of its right side blown off, because, y’know, guns.

PSA: the Nokia Lumia 1020 arrives in the UK today

Let’s face it — we can’t be sure Nokia’s Lumia 1020 is worth the hype until it’s taken a thousand shots of Big Ben and Westminster tube station. Fortunately for us, the PureView-toting handset is landing in the UK from today. We’ve managed to wrangle confirmation that Vodafone, Three and O2 will be selling the unit, but alas, EE currently has no plans to offer the handset to its million-strong LTE customer base. We suspect more than a few of you, disappointed at Cupertino’s latest imaging update, may be throwing your cash at the screen right now.

Three’s LTE rollout to reach 42 more UK cities in 2014

Three to tap EE's 4G network to reach additional 42 cities in 2014

If recent smartphone launches have you reconsidering your carrier options, here’s some 4G rollout info to throw into the mix. Unlike its rivals, Three is actively advertising its full LTE roadmap, focusing first on London, Birmingham, Manchester and Reading, which it hopes to switch on before the end of the year. Its plans for 2014 are much more expansive, however, with a total of 42 cities set to go live, covering 98 percent of the country by 2015. Although it’ll launch some months after its rivals, the carrier may scoop up customers with a promise not to charge extra for 4G data. Finally, as to whether Three will eventually change its name to Four, the company still isn’t saying.
