We’re Lifting Our Unboxing Ban For This Delightful Gent’s Packing Peanuts

We’ve had a longstanding ban on unboxing videos here at Gizmodo. Every once in a while, though, something happens that completely decimates everything you thought you knew about yourself. This happy accident of an Explainette unboxing is one such moment.

Sony’s PS4 Unboxing Video Trumps All Other Unboxing Videos Ever Made

We’re just four days away from the release of the PlayStation 4, which will usher in the next generation of video gaming, although some Wii U owners will debate their console was really the one to usher in the next generation of games. Either way, the PlayStation 4 is getting ready to be released later this week, so Sony thought you should know what exactly is in the box, but seeing how this is quite the momentous occasion, they unbox the console in a completely unique way. PS4 Gets Unboxed and Torn Down by Sony

Typically, unboxing and teardown videos don’t come out until after a new gadget hits the market, but Sony decided to beat third parties to the punch by letting their own engineer take apart the shiny new PS4 console.

The guys at WIRED scored an exclusive video with Sony Engineering Director Yasuhiro Ootori, who carefully unboxed the new console, then proceeded to tear it down – not only showing off its ease of repair, but all of the major components inside.

While it’s basically a super slimline x86 PC, the PS4 is one of the most efficiently designed systems I’ve seen. It’s amazing that they managed to keep the power supply unit built in, especially when the Xbox One has such a massive power brick.

Ootori also elaborates on the system’s high-bandwidth GDDR5 memory, and its specialized secondary processor which allows network operations to continue in the background while the system is in standby mode. The system also has a massive heatsink with copper pipes, along with a quiet running centrifugal fan to keep things nice and cool.

While I’m sure that iFixit will do a much more in-depth teardown after the PS4 is released, it’s cool to see Sony sharing so much too.

Calculator Unboxing Video Parody Is Hilarious

Unboxing videos are something of a tease, where you get to see someone tear open a brand new gadget without you experiencing any of the joy yourself. On the upside it lets you know what you can expect in the box, so you know if your box might have left out one accessory, or if it is different from what’s in the videos. We have created several unboxing videos ourselves in the past, such as with the 2013 Nexus 7 tablet which we hope was of immense value to our readers/viewers. Obviously not everyone feels the same way about unboxing videos and YouTube creator, Numberphile, has come up with a parody video of sorts where they unbox a handful of different calculators. According to the video’s description, “We put three calculators through their paces with a series of special tests.” It’s a pretty hilarious video and if you’re feeling the Monday blues, this will definitely cheer you up (no promises!). The video itself is rather lengthy at 13:50 so you might want to grab a drink or a snack, sit back, and enjoy!

This Calculator Unboxing Parody Is Hilarious

Unboxing videos are perhaps the biggest waste of YouTube storage to grace the planet: watch a pimple-faced youth take a phone out of a cardboard container and play with some basic functions! Woo. But here’s one worth watching.

Xbox One design finalized, gets unboxed by Microsoft

We’ve already been made aware that Microsoft changed a few things with the Xbox One since first unveiling it back in May, but just a few months before the console’s official launch, the company has finalized the design and hardware of the Xbox One and even treated us with an unboxing that shows us what […]

Take a look at one of the first Xbox One retail units (video)

There are still a few months until its November launch, but the Xbox One is already ready for primetime, apparently. One of the first Xbox One retail units — among just 20 or so in existence — made an appearance this morning in an unboxing video hosted by Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, director of programming for Microsoft’s Xbox division. In particular, the video features a limited edition “Day One” version of the console, which is more or less sold out at every major retailer (at least Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy). It’s just below the break.

If you were one of the lucky few (thousand) to get in on Day One Edition pre-orders, you’ll be getting the same stuff as standard edition pre-order folks, albeit with some extra “Day One Edition” branding flair — the gamepad says “Day One Edition” on it and has a chrome d-pad, and there’s an achievement exclusive to DOE owners. Both the standard and Day One editions cost $500, and both now include a wired Xbox One headset — something that was previously excluded from the retail box.

Also of note, the video’s subsequent blog post reveals that Xbox One gamepads recharge using microUSB rather than the proprietary cable used for charging Xbox 360 gamepads. Moreover, when the One’s gamepad is plugged in, the internal wireless radio is turned off and it transmits data through the wire (which was not the case with the 360 gamepad). This has interesting implications for the One’s gamepad in PC applications, which we’ll assuredly explore more in the coming weeks as Gamescom returns to Cologne, Germany for another year of Euro-style game news.

Update: We’ve added some official press photos of the headset that comes in the box. Enjoy!

NVIDIA SHIELD Unboxing and First (final hardware) Impressions

The launch of NVIDIA’s SHIELD device has been done in a rather unique way – one in which we’ve seen and actually played with the device several times before we’ve gotten a review unit for final testing purposes. Now that we’ve got the final hardware in the house, and now that it’s in it’s final
