Firefox Powers Better In-Browser Games At GDC14

Firefox Powers Better In Browser Games At GDC14On the heels of the game-changing announcement from Epic Games earlier today, I headed out to Mozilla’s booth at GDC14 to get a demo of their progress in running the Unreal and Unity engines in the browser. you may have seen Unity web containers in the past, but this is totally different since Unity has added support for a web/Javascript target. Now, two of the most popular game engines can export games to be run directly inside a browser and draw into an HTML5 canvas. (more…)

Explore Jerry Seinfeld’s Apartment Using Oculus Rift

Jerry’s Place is a project about nothing from programmer Greg Miller for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. And it is unlike any other. This one recreates Jerry Seinfeld’s apartment from Seinfeld with 3D models created in Blender for the Unity game engine.

    Greg says:

After purchasing the Oculus rift I started imagining what my first project might be. I decided to pick a project that would gradually introduce me to Unity without being overly complex. I was not new to 3D modeling, however this would be my first project in Unity. I came up with the idea of recreating Jerry’s apartment, in it’s entirety for virtual reality.

Jerry’s Place is available for download for Windows and Mac OSX on the project’s websiteSeinfeld fans are going to love spending some time with this one.

I wonder if Kramer ever bursts through the door.

Unity 42 adds support for Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and BB10

One of game development’s most used engines is adding support for Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Blackberry 10 today in its latest version, 4.2. Some support was already offered in the latest version’s beta run, but today Unity 4.2 drops out of beta and into primetime. That brings Unity’s mobile platform support up to four: Android, iOS, Windows Phone 8 and BB10 (for both free and paid version of the engine). Of course, the implications here are what matters — Unity powers major mobile titles like Temple Run 2 and Republique, not to mention the new Deus Ex mobile game. As for Windows 8, games like Surgeon Simulator 2013 (trust us — look into that one) and Interstellar Marines are powered by Unity. There are also a smattering of previously paid functions going free — head past the break for the full list.

Unity game engine to support Xbox One, gets a boost on Windows 8 and Windows Phone

Unity engine comes to Xbox One with support for Kinect and SmartGlass

When the Unity game engine runs virtually everywhere — well, almost — it’s no surprise that Unity Technologies has just announced that the engine will support the Xbox One. However, the firm is also revealing a partnership with Microsoft that promises a deeper level of integration on the One than we’ve seen on some other systems. Microsoft Studios partners will get to build Unity-based Xbox 360 and Xbox One games for free. They’ll also receive tools that take full advantage of the One’s tricks, including cloud computing, matchmaking, improved Kinect gestures and SmartGlass.

Developers who aren’t console-inclined are covered as well: the partnership will give all Unity Pro 4 customers free access to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 development add-ons once they’re available this summer. While there’s no guarantee that game producers are more likely to target Microsoft’s ecosystem than they have in the past, the Unity deal could lower some of the costs and technology barriers. And there may be more: Microsoft has dropped hints that it will provide further details on its support of indie console app development sometime in the near future.

Unity stops offering Flash game engine licenses, cites a lack of Adobe love

Unity stops offering Flash engine licenses, cites a lack of love from Adobe

The Unity 4 engine has given Flash gaming a lot of TLC by simplifying web ports of complex projects. If you ask Unity Technologies, however, that love isn’t being requited — and the company feels jilted enough to stop offering new Flash licenses, effective immediately. Adobe supposedly isn’t committed enough to the plugin, having halted work on both a re-engineered Flash Player Next as well as an attractive revenue sharing model. Unity is equally concerned about the broader developer community shying away from Flash at the same time as its own plugin, Unity Web Player, has soared past 200 million installs. While those with existing licenses should have Flash support for as long as versions of Unity 4 are in the field, the exit is bound to have game creators scrambling to find alternatives for any future web-based titles.

Bacteria completes epic Unity project, crams 15 consoles in one

Bacteria completes epic Unity project, crams 15 consoles in one

When it comes to modding consoles there are two names that generally stand above the rest: Mr. Benjamin J. Heckendorn and the man known as Bacteria. The latter has done his fair share of portable machines, but his latest completed project takes console hacking to lofty new heights. Unity crams a stunning 15 different consoles (including classics like the SNES and not-so-classics like the TurboGrafx 16) into a single, admittedly bulky box. The one of a kind entertainment center is the culmination of three years and $700 invested in bringing this dream to life. All of the hardware inside is either from the original consoles (no emulation of clone systems here!) or custom built — such as the 16-position switch. And, it should go without saying, that it took a whole lot to get these gaming machines to share a single power supply, video cable and control pad. Now that the epic project is finally complete Bacteria has provided a rather lengthy walk though of all the various features and the work that went into it, which you can check out after the break.

Unity 4 Game Engine Becomes ‘Massively Multi-Platform’

Unity 4 Game Engine Becomes Massively Multi PlatformUnity 4 has launched, and a lot of game developers worldwide are extremely enthusiastic about it. For end-users like you and I, it means that more games (and better games) will be available across all platforms, and for game developers, it means more features, better tools and a larger opportunity to leverage their work (make money) on new platforms. In you are not familiar with Unity, it’s a cross-platform game engine that uses used by a very large number of developers. It provides most of the infrastructure to build a game (if you’re a developer) and can be recompiled across platforms (PC/Mac/iOS/Android, Blackberry… ). (more…)
