Latest Raspbmc update brings speed boost, bug fixes and more (video)

Two months have passed since we last saw an update to the Raspberry Pi port of XBMC, but the tail end of September finally delivered some fresh code. Chief among the changes is a speed boost that makes browsing media libraries on Raspbmc much smoother and snappier. With the new software onboard, boxes now have a bevy of bugs fixed, boast support for Windows Media Center PVR and have a Wake On LAN feature for flipping on remote hardware before XBMC starts. Creator Sam Nazarko notes that folks who rely on AirPlay shouldn’t upgrade to iOS 7, as it could introduce some hiccups. Visit the source for the full changelog, or restart your machine to snatch the latest release. If you’re wondering just how much pep your Raspberry Pi will get, hit the break for a demo video.

Apple is no stranger to iMessage bugs, with one seeming to crop up every handful of months. Apple acknowledges iMessage delivery issues, is working on a fix

A number of iOS 7 users have reported problems sending and receiving using iMessage (not that it’s the first time), and tonight Apple has responded. The Wall Street Journal has a statement from the company claiming the issue affects “a fraction of a percent” of its iMessage users, and says it will be fixed in a future software update. TechCrunch points out a support document that may provide temporary relief to those experiencing the issue, otherwise users may need to fall back to one of the many, many, many other messaging services out there (but not BBM, yet, and Google Hangouts had its own issue recently) to make sure those messages are getting through.

PlayStation 3 update brings automatic downloads to all PSN users, more Vita sharing options

PlayStation 3 update brings automatic downloads to all PSN users, more Vita sharing options

Sony’s next-generation console may be nearing its launch date in some parts of the world, but the Japanese company isn’t forgetting about its aging PlayStation 3 just yet. With an update that’s due to roll out in the next few hours, the PS3 will no longer limit automatic firmware downloads to PlayStation Plus subscribers, a definite plus for non-paid PlayStation Network users. What’s more, version 4.50 also brings additional privacy settings to trophies and the ability to transfer data from the PS3 to PS Vita via a WiFi connection. It may not be the beefiest of updates, but sometimes keeping things short and sweet is just what the doctor ordered.

Update: 4.50 is now available.

Wii U update 4.0 brings Wii games to the GamePad’s screen

Wii U update 4.0 brings Wii games to the GamePad's screen

Nintendo’s pushing out version 4.0 of its Wii U system software, and it’s bringing a few unexpected — yet welcome — changes. Ironically, tweaks to how the hardware handles titles from The Big N’s last home console headline the update. Folks taking Wii games for a spin will now be able to do so using just the GamePad’s screen, and enjoy Dolby Pro Logic II surround output — though you’ll still need a Wii remote to play. Iwata and Co. have also rolled in an image sharing tool that mirrors the one on the 3DS, which lets gamers share screenshots on Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. With the fresh code in tow, demos from Nintendo can be downloaded automatically and a variety of USB keyboards are supported, to boot. The box’s internet browser also got some attention, as it’s been bolstered with the ability to open PDF files and remember user login details for web sites. Check your Wii U for the update or click the source link for the full changelog.
