Twitter now displays conversations in chronological order (video)

Twitter update streamlines conversations, displays them in chronological order video

Twitter has always been a great place to discuss hard-hitting news (like Miley Cyrus’ puzzling evolution), but following conversations can feel a bit like a mining expedition. The company has taken note, and a new update to the website, iOS and Android apps — available today — makes engaging in conversations on Twitter a much more intuitive process. Now, the first tweet in a chain will show up on your timeline above the replies, allowing you to read the conversation in chronological order. Up to two subsequent related tweets will be connected to the first by a vertical blue line; for lengthy conversations, you can continue reading with a simple tap. To learn more, check out Twitter’s video after the break.

Rdio for iOS updated with Station Tuning feature, new design for Collections

Rdio for iOS updated with Station Tuning feature, new design for Collections

Rdio’s used the past few months to bring an array of improvements to its iOS app — some functional and some cosmetic. To keep the momentum going, the company today released yet another update, including a Station Tuning feature that lets listeners “adjust any station to play more familiar or more adventurous tracks.” Additionally, the app’s Collection tab now sports a redesigned look, which makes for an easier, better-looking way to view album artwork. Rdio says search within has been improved as well, while other undisclosed, under-the-hood UI enhancements are also part of this version. Per usual, we’ve included the download link below.

Chrome OS stable turns 29 with ‘immersive’ mode, improved launcher search

Chrome OS stable channel updated to 29 with 'immersive' fullscreen mode, improved launcher search

The stable channel of Chrome OS has hit version 29, and with that tick comes a few new features we saw in beta just a month ago. Most notable is an “immersive” mode that hides the toolbar and shelf for a truly full-screen browsing experience. And, just like on the standalone browser, you need only hover at the top of the screen to bring those UI elements out of hiding. Pinning apps to the launcher has also been simplified with drag-and-drop — something so intuitive and obvious that we’re surprised it’s taken this long to implement. The app launcher’s search feature has also received a pretty impressive update, with the ability to pull in results from the web store as well as locally “installed” apps and it will dynamically learn from your searches to deliver the most relevant results. A few more minor tweaks have also been baked in, such as monitor scaling, wallpaper syncing and “two-finger history navigation” (which we’re pretty sure is fancy talk for a back and forward browser gestures). The update should be rolling out now to all Chrome OS devices, with the exception of the Thinkpad X131e.

DirecTV for iPhone reaches version 3.0, touts redesigned look and improved navigation

DirecTV for iPhone reaches version 30, touts redesigned look and improved navigation

We knew DirecTV had a few things in mind for its various mobile apps, with the focus being on discovery features and an overall better experience. Now, following a refresh to the iPad app earlier this month, the iPhone version is getting updated to version 3.0. The highlights of today’s release are the completely overhauled look and user interface, which allow users to browse content in an easier way and have more customization options within the guide — things like setting your favorite channels. DirecTV also added a redesigned Info Page that displays more details about the content you’re interested in, while a new Watch Button will let you seamlessly choose whether you want to view something on your iPhone or TV. Oh, and just in case you’re still stuck in the old days, we should tell you that the company says this is the last update to support iOS 5, so any future versions are to only be friendly with iOS 6 or later.

[Thanks, Stuart]

Mozilla previews new, cleaner Firefox for Android UI on Nightly build

DNP Firefox Nightly UI change

Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying a cleaner, shinier Firefox UI on Android — but not before Mozilla gets the more adventurous to test it out. The brand-spanking new interface merges the Start Page and the Awesomescreen, which is what you see after tapping on the URL bar. Thus, it will house your history, bookmarks, reading list and most visited websites in one place. While Mozilla UI engineer Lucas Rocha calls it the “biggest UI change in Firefox for Android” since the app was released, the update isn’t quite yet ready. If you’re unafraid of testing unstable releases, however, you can take the new UI for a spin via Firefox Nightly — Mozilla’s launchpad for new features. Everyone else, feel free to head past the break for a comparison image of the current and future interfaces.

Vine for Android update brings mentions, autocompleting hashtags

Vine proved you can do a lot with six seconds of video, and thanks to its latest Android update you can do even more. Version 1.3.4 brings a couple of usability fixes to help the world see your valiant attempts at short-form comedy, including @ mentions in posts and comments and autocompletion for hashtags. The changelog notes “other bugs fixes and improvements” too, but the takeaway here is that the Google version is just about on par with the iOS one. Now, could you please hurry along and make one of those rad stop-motion clips for us? Thanks.
