HTC One to receive KitKat upgrade in North America and UK by late January

HTC's Peter Chou loves his KitKat

HTC promised that One owners would get Android 4.4 KitKat within 90 days of the OS’ announcement, and it’s now detailing when specific countries will get their turn. The company’s North American and UK branches both say that they will start upgrading Ones to KitKat by late January, or right at the tail end of the 90-day window. There isn’t any word regarding the upgrade schedules in other large countries. However, Droid DNA fans won’t be left — HTC says they should get KitKat by the end of first quarter, or no later than March.

PS4 System Software Update 1.51 On Its Way

PS4 System Software Update 1.51 On Its WaySony PS4 owners, it is definitely time for you to take a break from all of that gaming. After all, it is always good to pause and rest for a bit. Take a walk around the room, or better yet, why not go on a brisk stroll on the outside while the weather is beautiful and fine? The game and its challenges will still be there after you are done. The Sony PS4, for all its fast moving sales figures, did not experience a perfectly smooth launch with reports of some units experiencing the Blue Light of Death. Well, we are pleased to bring you word that the first system software update for the PS4 since it was officially launched will be available later this evening, where it comes in at version 1.51.

This is a minor compulsory update, where it is touted to make the entire system a whole lot more stable. Not only that, additional improvements such as minor refinements to elements of the system UI have also been introduced. This means you now have a clear indicator of when you are downloading a game and a game patch simultaneously. For those living in North America, the console features automatic downloads for system and game updates by default whenever the PS4 remains in stand-by mode.

PS4’s first post-launch firmware update brings minor interface tweaks

    PlayStation 4

If you’re not keen on downloading more PlayStation 4 firmware in the wake of that giant Day One patch, we have bad news: Sony is already rolling out its first post-launch upgrade this evening. Thankfully, it’s a much smaller release this time around. The 1.51 update will both fix a few minor bugs and refine the interface, making it clearer when you’re downloading both a game and a patch at the same time. It’s not an exciting upgrade, then, but the PS4’s automatic downloads at least mean that you won’t have to lift a finger to run the latest software.

Moto X for Verizon starts getting Android 4.4 KitKat

    Moto X for Verizon

Motorola promised that it would be one of the first to roll out the Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade to its smartphones, and it’s making good on its word. The Google-owned company has announced that Moto X users on Verizon are getting the OS update beginning today. Most of the improvements are those inherent to KitKat itself, such as new Gallery editing features and the smarter phone dialer. However, Motorola has significantly improved its custom camera app — you can now drag your finger to control both the exposure and focus points. Details for Moto X upgrades on other carriers are coming “very soon,” the phone maker says. Whether or not you’re part of this first wave, you can check out the KitKat upgrade release notes at the source link.

Samsung pauses Android 4.3 update for Galaxy S III following reports of glitches

Samsung Galaxy S III close up

Samsung was apparently too hasty in rolling out its Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy S III. The phone maker says that it has paused the upgrade following reports of audio hiccups, excessive battery drain and freezes. There’s no word on when the upgrade will resume, although we suspect that Samsung will take its time stamping out as many bugs as possible. In the meantime, those who upgraded too quickly (or are still running Android 4.1) will just have to be patient.

Nest’s mobile app gets a full makeover, Protect smoke detector support

Nest 40 app brings full redesign, Protect support

Since Nest’s hardware and app go together like birds of a feather, new mobile software was inevitable after it launched the Nest Protect smoke detector. However, the startup darling has also taken the opportunity to completely revamp its app, mostly to make it easier to see all the important goings-on in your house. At a glance, you’ll now get the temperature you’ve set on your Nest Thermostat, whether it’s heating or cooling, the outside temperature and weather, and a big button to switch between home and away mode — in lieu of the former, slightly lame method of tilting your phone to landscape.

You’ll also see an icon for the new Nest Protect smoke alarm, which displays a green ring if everything’s a-okay, and yellow or red one for a heads-up or emergency, respectively. Selecting that icon will bring up the full app, showing all the detectors by room name, a green, yellow or red status for both smoke and carbon monoxide and the status of each alarm’s batteries and sensor. In addition, it’ll show the last WiFi update and time of your last manual test. Finally, the new app will bring a firmware update for the Nest Thermostat itself, with new features like “Quiet Time,” to prevent potentially noisy humidifier equipment from waking up kids, for instance, along with tweaks that make the system more efficient. Hang tight if you’re anxious to get them, because Nest said the new app and thermostat update will happen in a few days and install automatically.

Nokia Black update to add Bluetooth LE across entire WP8 Lumia range

Bluetooth low energy compatibility arrived on select Nokia Lumia models (520, 620, 625 and 720) through the Amber update, but now it’s making its way to the rest of the line. A new FAQ entry on Espoo’s website has confirmed that the feature will come to all devices in the range (even the more high-end ones) via the upcoming Lumia Black update. The Bluetooth 4.0 mode mode uses less power than traditional Bluetooth data connections, and its arrival will allow all Lumias to connect with accessories and other gadgets that use the technology exclusively. Nokia has yet to reveal when Black will be released, but we’ll update you faster than a Bluetooth transfer as soon as we find out.
