Google Now update brings emergency alerts to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Google has rolled out a new Search update for Android, and it includes a handful of new features for Google Now. This means that if you’re not running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, you’re going to have to sit this one out, sadly. Those who are running Android 4.1 will probably want to give this update a look, as it adds a few interesting features.

There are three new features to note in this Google Now update: for starters, users can now find showtime information for movies playing near them through Now. Support for emergency messages has been added in this update as well, giving you severe weather warnings and other emergency alerts right on your Now page. This will undoubtedly come in handy for the more turbulent areas of the world, and it could potentially save a few lives, so it’s good to have it along.

The third feature Google has added gives users the ability to “follow” their favorite sports teams. In all, users can choose from “140 soccer, football, hockey and baseball teams to follow in real time,” unfortunately Google’s lineup only features professional teams for now – college fans will have to wait. Still, with the kickoff to the NFL season just around the corner and the NHL and NBA seasons not far behind, this feature is definitely one that will garner some excitement.

As an added bonus, Google has also included support for users in Korea with this latest update, and you can snag it now from the Google Play Store. So there you have it – one of Android 4.1′s more compelling aspects just got a little better. Sure, there aren’t a ton of new features to be found in this new update, but the ones it does add are important and/or awesome. Be sure to have a look at our story timeline below to find out more about Google Search and Google Now!

Google Now update brings public safety alerts, lets sports fans manually pick teams and adds movie listings

Google Now update adds public alerts, lets sports fans manually pick their teams and adds movie listings

If you’re sporting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean then one of its most notable features just got better, as an update for the Google Search update is enhancing Google Now (still getting adjusted? check the guide book for a list of commands) functionality in a few key ways. The new version brings public alerts to your Now page, with emergency messages like storm warnings or earthquake alerts, so if you’re in range of Hurricane Isaac, it may be worth grabbing sooner rather than later. A more trivial change lets sports fans manually select their favorite teams from 140 pro soccer, baseball, basketball and hockey clubs — we tried to find our college favorites and were denied, for now. While trying to automatically decipher our preferred squads from searches is nice, it might not be practical when we’re just looking up information on our fantasy football players so this should be a help.

It has also added support for movie listings as seen above. Search for a flick that’s in theaters and you will not only receive relevant information, but also when and where it’s playing in your area. If that’s not enough, it can be set to pop up on your “movie days” or when you just happen to be loitering outside a theater. Finally, in a move that should please many prospective Galaxy Note II owners it is ready to work in Korea — grab the new version of the app at the link below.

Vimeo adds advanced uploading features, custom thumbnails and Dropbox integration

Vimeo adds advanced uploading features, custom thumbnails and Dropbox integration

Last we heard, Vimeo was the one being integrated into a couple of Microsoft’s photo and movie-making products, but now it’s the video giant announcing a service integration of its own. Of course, as you can see above, we’re talking about the recently announced Dropbox synthesis — which will allow Vimeo users to upload vid content straight from the cloud locker behemoth, as well as save all original files to their account. Furthermore, Vimeo’s also added new advanced uploading features that essentially allow uploads to be resumed, plus the ability to choose any frame and set it as a thumbnail — a nice addition to those soundtrack tools from earlier this year. You can give these a try yourself now; in the meantime, however, we recommend checking out Vimeo’s fresh feature-touting visuals after the break.

Samsung says Jelly Bean update coming to Galaxy S III and Note 10.1 ‘very soon’

Samsung says Jelly Bean update coming to Galaxy S III and Note 101 'very soon'

It’s not as specific as we’re guessing some would like, but Samsung confirmed during its IFA 2012 keynote today that a Jelly Bean update is coming to both the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 10.1 “very soon.” That is at least a bit more encouraging than the “later this year” that we last heard for the Note 10.1, and follows a leak of an official GS3 Jelly Bean build earlier this month. The original Galaxy Note wasn’t specifically mentioned on stage, but it did make an appearance on the company’s Jelly Bean slide, so we’d assume an update for it is coming as well, if not necessarily “very soon.”

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 joins the ICS party with Android 4.0.4 update

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 joins the ICS party with Android 4.0.4 update

If 8.9 was the number of inches you required from your Samsung Galaxy tab, you may have been a little frustrated at the general lack of much expected ICS updates. Especially as many of your Galaxy cohorts had already received theirs. Well, wait no more, as the download is finally here in the US. As you might expect it’s 4.0.4, and it apparently comes with a new — and many say better — version of TouchWiz. Better slide that finger down about 8.7-inches across the screen, and dig up those update settings then.

BBC iPlayer adds radio support to Xbox app

BBC iPlayer adds radio support to Xbox app

Well, they certainly made you wait for it, but the BBC has finally delivered on its promise, bringing radio support to its Xbox 360 app. When iPlayer launched on the console in March, patient customers were initially left without access to the national network’s vast catalog of audio programming. With today’s 22MB update that changes, but only so long as you’re sticking with archived materials. You’ll have access to the catch up feature, but no live streaming (so don’t expect to get your breaking news through your Xbox). You’ll also be able to pick up where you left off with previously accessed programs. If you’ve got an urge to find out about all the work that went into the UI design, hit up the source.

Mozilla releases Thunderbird 15 with Firefox-like UI, live chat

Mozilla releases Thunderbird 15 with Firefoxlike UI, live chatMozilla might be scaling back its official support of Thunderbird, but it still has love left for those who yearn for more in their e-mail clients than OS developers can give. The newly-released Thunderbird 15 update’s most conspicuous change is a deliberate visual harmony with its Firefox cousin: the company wants its apps to have more in common than just a shared name on the About screen. Under the hood, there’s now a live chat feature to skip the wait for e-mail, a Do Not Track option for web searches and the choice of using Ubuntu One cloud storage for large attachments. It’s hard to know if future Thunderbird releases will be as substantial once the community takes the reins. For now, though, Thunderbird aficionados can relax.

[Thanks, Keith]

Ice Cream Sandwich update won’t be coming to HTC’s Incredible S, says Bell Mobility

Ice Cream Sandwich update won't be coming to HTC's Incredible S, says Bell Mobility

Even though Jelly Bean’s the latest mobile OS to come out of Mountain View, there are still OEMs and carriers working on delivering the not-so-fresh Ice Cream Sandwich update to some of their earlier handsets. Now, unlike what we’d previously heard, it appears HTC’s Incredible S won’t be on the receiving end of said 4.0.x refresh, with Bell Mobility taking to Twitter to reveal that the Taiwanese outfit “will not be updating the Incredible S with ICS.” Still, things could potentially take a turn for the best, as the Canadian carrier told a cheerless S owner, “If that changes, I’ll let you know.” As for us, well, we’ll have to hold off on making any changes to our current Ice Cream Sandwich list.

Nokia Belle Refresh released worldwide today

Just this afternoon Nokia released a significant software update to their Symbian collection of devices going by the name of Nokia Belle Refresh. This update will affect a whole batch of Nokia smartphones including the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia X7 and Nokia Oro. The Nokia E6 will also be updated later this week while the Nokia 500 is set to pop up within a few weeks from now.

This update to Nokia devices working with Symbian software is bringing on several rather fabulous upgrades including, first of all, a brand new web browser. This new web browser comes with HTML5 support for web apps of all kinds, and the release comes right alongside a brand new set of homescreen widgets as well. This update is also bringing on the previously released Microsoft Office Mobile App and Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 in one handy package.

With this update also comes a selection of new apps dedicated to imaging. You’ll get the update in one of several rollout phases that will be popping up very, very soon. Vanilla versions of devices will be coming first, those being the devices with no software variants depending on country or mobile carrier. After this software rollout is complete, the country and operator variants of the software will appear inside the next few weeks.

Users should be prepared – however one might prepare – for the possibility that certain 3rd party apps will not work immediately after updating to Nokia Belle Refresh. Nokia notes that “Just like after updating from Nokia Anna to Nokia Belle, some apps may not work due to compatibility issues. If you need more information on available apps, please contact your local Nokia Care support. Furthermore, you can also contact the respective App developer to enquire about the compatibility.”

Facebook Camera update adds notifications, lets you pick and choose albums

Facebook Camera update 11 adds notifications, lets you pick and choose albums

The Facebook Camera just scored a nice little update in the iTunes app store. Now the filter-equipped shooter will let you pick and choose which folders to upload your pics to — something that probably should have been included in version one. It also brings notifications to the party, letting you keep track of when friends comment, tag or like a photo. It’s actually not bad for a measly .1 update.
