Sony Confirms Sale Of VAIO PC Business

Sony Confirms Sale Of VAIO PC BusinessJust last week the rumors swirled that Sony could be looking to sell off their VAIO business. One of the possible candidates was Lenovo which Sony has since denied. Then new rumors came about suggesting that the VAIO division would be bought out by a Japanese investment firm and as it turns out, those particular set of rumors were right. Sony has since announced that they will indeed be selling off their VAIO PC division to Japan Industrial Partners for an undisclosed sum of money. This deal will also see Sony stop the design and development of PC products, which Sony claims is due to the “drastic changes in the global PC industry,” as one of the reasons.

As it stands Sony is expected to now concentrate on their mobile lineup of smartphones and tablets while JIP will be taking control of their VAIO PC business. The deal is expected to conclude by the end of July, assuming that everything goes as planned. JIP also plans on keeping the VAIO lineup alive, although they will be limiting sales of VAIO computers in Japan, with Sony investing a 5% stake in JIP’s new company which will play home to the VAIO computers. Sony’s VAIO computers have typically been off the higher-end when it came to computers and usually came with rather sleek designs. We’re sure many will be sad to see it go – what do you guys think?

Sony’s VAIO Lineup Almost Ran OS X

Sonys VAIO Lineup Almost Ran OS XAs we all know, Apple’s OS X operating system is an exclusive piece of software that is available on Apple’s Mac products, just like how iOS is only available on Apple made mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad. However it seems that back in the day, Apple did consider licensing out OS X and one of their potential partners was Sony. This is according Japanese writer, Nobuyuki Hayashi who has had two decades worth of experience covering Apple related news. He quotes ex-Sony president, Kunitake Ando, who claimed that back in 2001, Steve Jobs was so impressed by Sony’s VAIO lineup that he wanted OS X to be installed on it.

“Steve Jobs and another Apple executive were waiting for us at the end of the golf course holding VAIO running Mac OS.” Apparently this was shortly after Apple decided to axe the Mac clone business, but were sufficiently impressed by the VAIO that they were willing to make an exception. However the timing was not right as the VAIO lineup had recently taken off and the discussions eventually amounted to nothing. It would have been interesting to see other manufacturers offer up OS X computers but what do you guys think? Do you think Apple’s decision to make it exclusive to their own products was the right one?

Sony VAIO Brand Rumored To Be Sold To Japanese Investment Firm

Sony VAIO Brand Rumored To Be Sold To Japanese Investment FirmAre they selling? Are they not selling? Well a couple of days ago we heard the rumors that Sony might be looking to sell off their VAIO PC division to Lenovo. This rumor has since been denied by Sony, but at the same time did not deny that they could still be on the lookout for potential buyers, although in this case not necessarily Lenovo. Well according to a recent report from Nikkei, it was suggested that Sony could be selling off their VAIO division to a Japanese investment fund instead, Japan Industrial Partners.

The sale, estimated to be between $391 million to $489 million, will allow Sony to keep a small stake in the VAIO brand and continue to operate it in select markets where the VAIO brand is well-known. However as for Japan, it is said that the VAIO brand will turn its focus towards business users, rather than your average consumer. The deal is far from done and it is expected to become official by the end of March. Naturally Sony has not confirmed this deal yet so do take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Will you be sad to see the Sony VAIO brand disappear?
