Sony Introduces Vaio Fit Line To Offer A Step Up From Entry Level Laptops

Sony has been manufacturing its Vaio line of laptops for several years now with a number of series within the brand such as its Vaio S, Vaio E and Vaio Z. Today, it looks as though Sony will finally be simplifying its Vaio brand with their newly announced Vaio Fit line.

The Vaio Fit laptops are being introduced for customers who want a budget-friendly laptop, but also want it to be a “step up” in terms of its design as a cheap laptop doesn’t have to have a cheap feeling to it. The designs of the Vaio Fit will feature aluminum casings, while the Vaio Fit E line will focus on being as thin and light as possible. Both the Vaio Fit and Vaio Fit E lines will feature two models: a 14-inch model with a 1600 x 900 resolution screen and a 15-inch Full HD display (1920 x 1080). (more…)

Sony VAIO Fit notebooks target back-to-school sharers with NFC

Sony has revealed its latest entry-level VAIO notebooks, the VAIO Fit series, with a choice of 14- and 15.6-inch displays, 3rd-gen Intel Core processors, and the option of dedicated NVIDIA graphics. Kicking off from $649 for the VAIO Fit 14 and $699 for the VAIO Fit 15 – which have 1600 x 900 and 1920 x 1080 displays, respectively – the new Fit range also throw in features like NFC for easier transfer of content between notebooks and Xperia smartphones.

For instance, tap your phone or tablet against your notebook, and you can push a website address from your laptop, or vice-versa, Sony suggests. The NFC can also be used as a way to quickly pair two devices via WiFi or Bluetooth, much as Sony has already done with its NFC-enabled smart TV remote controls.

Meanwhile, there’s aluminum detailing on the Fit 14/15, an optional capacitive touchscreen, and Exmor R webcams. The Fit E-series models get plastic casings, with the Fit 14E and 15E having “big box” speakers, Sony says, while the 15E also gets a subwoofer.

The Fit 15/15E also accommodates a separate numeric keypad, though all the models have backlit ‘boards. NVIDIA GeForce graphics with up to 2GB of dedicated memory are optional, and there’s a choice of regular HDD, hybrid hard-drive, or SSD options. DVD and Blu-ray are also on offer.

Sony says the VAIO Fit 14 and 15 will hit shelves in mid-May, priced from $649 for the Fit 14 and $699 for the Fit 15, each available in black, pink, or silver. The Fit E 14E and Fit 15E will be offered in black, pink, or white, priced from around $549 and $579 respectively.

Sony’s mainstream laptops now named ‘Fit,’ arrive ahead of back-to-school season

At some point — we’re not sure when — Sony’s naming scheme for laptops got confusing. There was the C series and the E series. The S, T, Z and even the F (RIP). Fortunately, Sony’s been working to clear things up: its first Windows 8 products all had descriptive names like “Duo” or “Tap.” Now, it’s streamlining its mainstream notebooks too. The company just unveiled some redesigned models for back-to-school season, and they’re all named ‘Fit.’ As the replacement to the entry-level E series and most of the T line, the Fit family includes both lower-end models (the Fit 14E / Fit 15E) and premium ones (the Fit 14 / Fit 15). They’ll be available this month, starting at $550 and going all the way up to $2,210, depending on how many upgrades you check off during the configuration process.

Regardless, there are certain specs you’ll find across the board – not just on the Fit machines, mind you, but on every Sony PC announced this season. These include NFC, backlit keyboards and webcams with Sony’s Exmor R imaging tech for better low-light performance. They’ll all have 1080p screens, too, with the exception of the 14-inch Fits, which start at 1,600 x 900. Both the Fit and Fit E will be offered with optional NVIDIA GT 740M GPUs (1GB or 2GB), touchscreens, optical drives and a choice of Core i3, i5 and i7 processors (Ivy Bridge for now). Ultimately, then, the difference between the two comes down to build quality: the Fit E is made of plastic, whereas the Fit has a thinner aluminum chassis, with the fans hidden above the keyboard, and a lid that covers the hinge. Also, the Fit will be offered with SSDs, with hybrid drives being the base option; the Fit E comes standard with a regular HDD and can be upgraded to a hybrid drive. Sony launches a trio of VAIO Fit laptops in Japan

Spring is here, which means it’s high time that Sony refreshed its laptop line for the cool kids in Japan. The company is talking up a quartet of new VAIOs including the previously-reviewed Duo 11 as well as the unfamiliar trio of the VAIO Fit 15E, Fit 14 and Fit 15. Delving deep into that last model, the 22.5mm-thick unit comes with a 1,920 x 1,080 touchscreen display and runs the 64-bit version of Windows 8 on a 2GHz Intel Core i7-3537U CPU. Look deeper and you’ll find 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 1TB of hybrid storage as well as 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, NFC and an Exmor R webcam. The various models will filter into Japanese stores between May 18th and June 1st, with the stock Fit 15 setting you back 180,000 yen ($1,818).

Sony’s VAIO T13 was a sub-$1000 Ultrabook with an eye on the education market. While we were impressed by the results, its low price meant that compromises had to be made — especially in the keyboard department. In fact, we were saddened to see that it was packing shallow keys and weirdly wide spacing that made it uncomfortable to type on. But if you were one of those back-to-schoolers who bought one, what did you think of it and what would you have changed about it?

Sony VAIO T14 and T15 touchscreen Ultrabooks arrive at Sony’s store, Best Buy starting at $770

Sony flaunted its VAIO T series 14- and 15-inch Windows 8 touch-enabled Ultrabooks at CES 2013 last month, but we weren’t able to do anything at the time but snap, film and fondle them a bit. Now those models have arrived on Sony’s store for pre-order, giving us a complete picture of pricing, specs and availability. We knew about the 15.5-inch, 1920 x 1080 touchscreen for the T15, and now we also know it’ll be available with 3rd generation Intel Core i3-3227U, i5-3337U and i7-3537U processors starting at $770, $950 and $1,150 respectively. You’ll also get Intel HD 4000 graphics, HDMI out, USB 3.0 and a DVD burner, with 4GB of RAM and 500GB + 24GB hybrid hard drive (HHD) on the i3 model; 6GB of RAM and the same HHD on the i5 model; and 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and Blu-ray disk player on the top Core-i7 model for $1,400.

The VAIO T series 14-inch models, meanwhile, will sport a 14-inch, 1366 x 768 touch display with 3rd gen Intel Core i5-3337U processors, 6GB of RAM, 500 GB + 24GB SSD HHDs, a DVD burner, Intel HD 4000 graphics, HDMI out and USB 3.0. That model will run $900, but of course you’ll be able to customize it (or the T15) to your heart, and wallet’s content. Meanwhile, Best Buy is also showing the VAIO T15 model with Core i5, 8GB of RAM and the 500GB + 24GB HHD for $930 or so. Sony’s got most of them in stock, with custom models shipping by February 19th, well before its CES prognostication of “early Spring” — so if you’ve been hoping to actually, you know, do something with those famous Windows 8 live tiles, hit the source.

Sony details VAIO T15, touchscreen T14 Ultrabooks on their way to Japan

Sony was mum on most of the details of the VAIO T15 and a touch-upgraded T14 when they appeared at CES. We won’t have to wait until the spring launch in the US to know what some editions of the Ultrabook will carry, though. At least for Japan’s February 9th release, the T15 won’t be running any Haswell-based parts — the top-spec system carries a 2GHz Core i7 from the current generation, a BDXL drive and a 1TB hybrid hard disk. The touch-ready T14 will be just as modest with a 1.8GHz Core i5, a DVD burner and up to 750GB of hybrid storage. We wouldn’t be shocked to see performance boosts to either PC before they cross the Pacific, but we at least know what to expect as a baseline.

Sony VAIO T15 Touch and T14 Touch hands-on

It’s all-fingers-on-screen for Sony‘s latest VAIO ultrabooks, the T15 Touch and T14 Touch, which each slap a 10-digit multitouch layer on top of the regular display for some swiping Windows 8 action. Fresh at CES this week, the new Intel-powered duo is more of the same from Sony’s ultrabook line-up, with brushed aluminum chassis and backlit keyboards.

The touchscreen works well, though we’ve still got mixed feelings about the usability of reaching over the keyboard and stabbing at the display. We’re also left thinking that Sony’s decision to carry over the ultrabook branding to the T15 Touch might be a bit ambitious; it’s not exactly a light machine, though in return you get plenty of connections (USB 3.0, both HDMI and VGA, and an ethernet socket) and an integrated optical drive.

The T14 Touch makes far more sense, ditching the separate numeric keypad but still retaining a solid-feeling ‘board and a sizable trackpad. Sony’s choice of materials can’t be faulted, either; the soft-touch composite strip that runs along the upper outer edge of the lid – where the antenna are – is a particularly nice compromise between tactile feel and wireless performance.

Unfortunately, the T14 Touch doesn’t share its bigger sibling’s 1080p Full HD display; instead, it makes do with a more humdrum 1366 x 768 panel. Sony isn’t saying when the new VAIOs will go on sale, nor for what price.
