Valve’s Gabe Newell Not Fazed By Xbox One Sales Figures

Valves Gabe Newell Not Fazed By Xbox One Sales FiguresThe Xbox One is Microsoft’s latest gaming console and at the moment, the competition between Microsoft and Sony is pretty fierce, but can it compare to the likes of PC gaming? We know that the Xbox One has done pretty well for itself so far and has managed to sell 3 million units in 2013 alone, but are those number sufficient enough for Valve to get worried? Apparently not. Speaking during CES, Valve’s Gabe Newell was asked by a member of the audience what he thought about Microsoft’s 3 million Xbox One units sold to date. Well apparently it was not enough to be impressed as Newell reportedly shrugged off the figures and said, “Well, it’d take a while for them to catch up. I mean, we’re at 65 million,” in reference to Steam’s user base at the moment.

As it stands Steam plays home to many games, a lot of them blockbuster titles, although companies such as Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft could rest easy as Steam’s platform was mainly targeted towards PC gamers. However it seems that those companies might have something to worry about as Steam has recently announced a whole new set of Steam Machines which have been designed to invade your living room space, encroaching on territory that has been dominated by the likes of Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft over the past several years. Given that these Steam Machines not only come at various price points with hardware ranging from acceptable to high-end, Valve might have given those companies something to seriously worry about.

If Valve’s Steam Machines were to take off, that 3 million figure will definitely pale in the face of what’s to come.

Valve’s Steam Machines Will Be Built By 13 Different Companies

Valves Steam Machines Will Be Built By 13 Different Companies[CES 2014] Back in 2013, Valve unveiled Steam Machines which was basically the company’s way of breaking into the living room market, which at the moment is dominated by the likes of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Given that the Steam platform is home to many games, big name games for that matter, softwarewise Valve had that covered. However as far as hardware was concerned, there were some questions about that, but come CES 2014, Valve has announced that they not only had one, or two, or three, but thirteen different hardware partners that would be helping the company develop Steam Machines for consumers in the near future.

According to Valve, the SteamOS powered Steam Machines will cost as low as $499 and each machine will come bundled with a Steam Controller. So which manufacturers did Valve manage to attract? Well as it turns out, Valve has managed to attract some pretty big names. According to the company, Alienware, Alternate, CyberPowerPC, Digital Storm, Falcon NW, GigaByte, iBuyPower, Maingear, Material.net, Next Spa, Origin PC, Scan, Webhallen, and Zotac will be the companies responsible to producing Valve’s first-gen Steam Machines. This is pretty impressive as some of these brands, such as Alienware, Digital Storm, and Falcon NW are well-established players in the gaming PC market and have put out some pretty amazing products in the past, which also means of these Steam Machines will not come cheap.

Either way we look forward to hearing more about the Steam Machine efforts from these manufacturers in the near future, so check back with us then for the details! In the meantime which company are you most looking forward to?

It feels like everyone has a Steam Machine these days, and Alienware is no exception. But not all Steam Machines happen to look like an evil TiVo from the future like the Alienware X51 does. Alienware’s been selling computers with Steam pre-installed for years, but they go whole-hog with this bad boy late 2014.

Do we call these gaming PCs or consoles? Well, however they get labeled, they feature Bluetooth, WiFi, USB 3.0, 8GB of RAM and they come with a Steam Controller. Steam Machine A is the cheaper of the pair, with a 3.9GHz A6 CPU from AMD and a 2GB Radeon R9 270 graphics card. It’s pretty basic, but should be all you need for most modern games.

The Steam Machine I is the higher end model, with a 3.5GHz Core i3 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 graphics, as well as 802.11ac Wi-Fi. This configuration has a starting price of $699. CyberPower is allowing customers to customize almost every facet of the machine too, so you can get pretty expensive if you go all out. Both machines are expected to ship in the second half of this year. Happy gaming.

After you play on these Steam machines, you can use the other kind to clean up all of your Cheetos dust and Mountain Dew from the carpet.

Gabe Newell Explains Why Valve Doesn’t Churn Out Half-Life Sequels

Gabe Newell Explains Why Valve Doesnt Churn Out Half Life SequelsWhen will we be able to expect Half-Life 3? 2014? 2015? Well whatever it is, Valve seems to be denying the existence of the game at the moment, despite the mountain of rumors which we have been hearing about recently. After all Half-Life has to be one of the more iconic franchises in the video game industry and it would make sense for Valve to capitalize on that, wouldn’t it? After all given the success of the Half-Life franchise, it would be almost easy money for the company to create sequel after sequel of the game, but as it turns out as easy and tempting as it would be, it is not in Valve’s culture to do so.

Speaking in an interview with The Washington Post, Valve’s Gabe Newell revealed why the company does not take the easy route out and just produce sequel after sequel. “When we started out we were a single-player video game company that could have been really successful just doing Half-Life sequel after Half-Life sequel, but we collectively said let’s try to make multiplayer games even though there’s never been a commercial successful multiplayer game.” Of course there is nothing wrong with churning out sequel after sequel. In fact companies such as Ubisoft have no qualms about releasing Assassin’s Creed titles on a yearly basis because that’s how confident they are of the franchise.

What do you guys think? Do you think that constant releases will devalue a franchise, or are you, like most gamers, starting to get impatient that Valve has yet to make any Half-Life 3 announcements?
