Steam Hit By DDoS Attacks, Hackers Claim Responsibility

Steam Hit By DDoS Attacks, Hackers Claim ResponsibilityIt certainly seems like 2014 is off to a series of hacks. We had heard how Snapchat got hacked, and how Microsoft’s Skype social media accounts had been hacked, and now according to the latest reports, we are hearing word that Valve’s Steam platform has been attacked by hackers as well who have launched a series of DDoS attacks against the company’s servers, causing outages and rendering gamers unable to play their online games or connecting to the service entirely. Gamers attempting to connect to Valve have since been greeted with the error message pictured in the screenshot above.

According to one Twitter user, it seems that him/her along with another user by the name of @LARCENY_ have claimed responsibility for the attacks, with the message reading, “so we’re launching more ddos dildo attacks at steam, me n @LARCENY_” It is unclear if they are truly behind the attacks or if they are simply capitalizing on a coincidental Steam outage, but either way regardless of what it is, Steam’s Twitter account has been oddly quiet with no mention about the outage of hacks at the moment. This alleged attack on Steam is not the first as a few days ago, a group of hackers calling themselves DERP launched an attack on various online games, such as Dota 2 and LoL, taking them offline. We will update this article when we learn more about the matter at hand.

Dota 2 Now Available To Play Without Signing Up

Dota 2 Now Available To Play Without Signing UpValve’s Dota 2 is definitely not a new game and there have been many gamers who have been playing it for at least the past year or so. Heck, we’ve even seen several competitions held around the game where gamers have won money from it, but the good news is that if you have been thinking about getting your hands on the game, you now can because thanks to a recent patch that was released for the game, gamers will be able to download the game and start playing right away.

Like we said earlier, the game is not a new one and if you’re wondering what the fuss is about, it is because previously before the patch was released, gamers had to wait for their accounts to be activated before they were able to start playing, but now thanks to the patch, the waiting time is now over. Dota 2 is based on the Dota game that was originally released as a mod for Blizzard’s Warcraft 3 RTS game, and while Blizzard and Valve might have had a dispute over the title, Valve ultimately won the rights to the name, with Blizzard releasing their own MOBA called Heroes of the Storm.

SteamOS Beta Now Available: All Aboard the Valve Train

If console gamers have the PS4 and Xbox One to be excited about, Valve has given the master race and their incessantly upgraded next, next-gen PC hardware something to tinker with. You can now download the first public beta version of SteamOS, the Linux-based and gaming-centered operating system.

    steam os beta 1 620x343magnify

The current version of SteamOS is based on Debian 7 plus the Gnome desktop environment. As Ars Technica notes, this beta build is for the earliest of early adopters. Bugs and glitches aside, “all it is today is a way to run a limited subset of your existing Steam library on an odd version of Steam that requires a dedicated computer.” Another thing to keep in mind is that the beta only supports NVIDIA graphics cards, though the final version will include support for AMD and Intel graphics. Here’s an overview shared by YouTuber Marcelo Salvador. Skip to 3:00 in the video to see SteamOS – or at least Steam in SteamOS – in action:

You can download the SteamOS beta from its official website. Valve also posted installation instructions here, which by the way clearly state that the process will erase all content on the target drive, so you might want to consider installing it on a virtual (Steam) machine for now like Marcelo did.
