Prior to Nokia World 2013, we heard rumors that apart from the Lumia 1520, Nokia might also announce the Lumia 929. The smartphone was said to have a 5 inch 1,920×1,080 display and it was said to be a Verizon exclusive. Nokia didn’t announce the device at the event though, it is still not known when the Lumia 929 is going to be made official. We’ve seen the device in leaked pictures and even a video since then, but now it has been leaked in all its glory, seeing as how the folks at WPCentral have got their hands on high quality photos of an actual unit.
It is not known when the Verizon Lumia 929 is going to be released, rumor has it that might be released either around Thanksgiving or early next year. Its specifications have also been leaked, basically most of what was rumored before has been reiterated. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quadcore processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB onboard storage, 20 megapixel PureView rear camera, dual LED flash, Qi wireless charging and a number of Verizon exclusive apps. A few days back Google finally announced the Nexus 5, and revealed that Android 4.4 KitKat will be released for existing Nexus devices in the coming weeks. Android enthusiasts around the world can’t wait to get the update on their devices, but unfortunately, Galaxy Nexus owners have been left out. Google has confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus won’t receive an official Android 4.4 update, but that certainly won’t stop custom ROMs built from AOSP. An Android 4.4 Verizon Galaxy Nexus custom ROM has been released, developed by an Android developer called baldwinguy77, who is known for the OTA quality ROMs he builds for Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
Before we proceed any further, you must keep in mind that there are certain risks attached to flashing custom ROMs. If you’re not careful enough, you could end up bricking your device, and only you will be responsible for that. That said, it should also be kept in mind that since Android 4.4 custom ROMs are fairly new, its quite likely that there might be a few bugs here and there even if the ROM is classified as stable. This particular ROM includes the standard Google apps and Verizon apps package found on an OTA update, so you won’t have to look around for a compatible apps package once you’ve done flashing the ROM. Only proceed with flashing if you absolutely know what you’re doing. The Android 4.4 Verizon Galaxy Nexus custom ROM is available from RootzWiki.

Vodafone is the largest mobile carrier in Europe and AT&T reportedly wants a piece of it. Bloomberg reports today that AT&T’s employees are internally “laying the groundwork” for a takeover of Vodafone as soon as next year. Apparently both companies have yet to enter formal negotiations, but AT&T is said to be focusing on which Vodafone assets it would retain and which could be sold off to others if a takeover does go through. The carrier is reportedly also preparing a strategy to bolster Vodafone’s operations in Europe, UK’s EE is said to be its alternative takeover target.
This isn’t the first time that AT&T has been rumored to be interested in Vodafone. Back in April this year, it was said that both Verizon and AT&T might team up to takeover Europe’s largest carrier, however Verizon denied the reports back then. A couple of months ago, Big Red announced that its buying out Vodafone’s stake in its business for $130 billion, making it the third largest corporate acquisition. If AT&T and Vodafone reach an agreement, and the former is able to pick up the latter, the takeover would have to wait until Verizon’s buyout of Vodafone’s stake is completed. Both AT&T and Vodafone have yet to comment on this report.

Earlier today we picked up on a leaked press render of a 7 inch tablet that Verizon is expected to announce soon, called the Ellipsis 7. More details have emerged about this device today, courtesy of a internal handout that was reportedly given to certain Verizon employees today. Apparently Ellipsis is a new brand of budget oriented devices that Verizon is going to launch come November 7th, with Ellipsis 7 being the first device in this new brand.
The tablet is said to have a 7 inch IPS display with “HD” resolution, presumably 1,280×800. A 1.2GHz quadcore processor is said to be under the hood, model and manufacturer not known at this point in time. The render itself points towards the possibility of a front facing camera, but it can’t be said for sure if there’s one on the back as well. Internal storage is rumored to be 8GB with the option to expand through microSD cards. The Ellipsis 7 is said to have a 4,000mAh battery, which should be enough to power its 4G LTE radio, making it compatible with Verizon’s 4G LTE network in the country. Off contract, the Verizon Ellipsis 7 is believed to cost $249.99. The carrier is said to offer a $100 discount to those who sign a two year contract. Its imperative to keep in mind that none of the information provided here, taken from the leaked handout, has been officially confirmed by Verizon, so there’s no point in forming a notion about Verizon’s budget oriented tablet just yet.

Samsung may have teased the upcoming release of the Galaxy S4 Mini to AT&T, Sprint and Verizon for release some time in November, but its Galaxy S3 Mini has yet to make itself available across all of U.S. carriers. The availability of the Galaxy S3 Mini in the U.S. has been slow, but it looks like may not be waiting long for Verizon’s to be released as @evleaks has just outed what looks to be a press render for the device. Heads up Verizon subscribers, if you’re looking forward to getting your hands on a new tablet, a leak by the ever-reliable @evleakshas revealed a tablet that could soon be launched on the carrier’s network by the name of the Ellipsis 7. Unfortunately apart from the name and the press rendering of the alleged device, not much else is known about the upcoming tablet, such as its price, specs, and availability, although if we had to venture a guess, we reckon the “7” in its name is most likely referring to a 7” display. The press rendering also reveals what appears to be a front-facing camera, so we guess that the tablet will have that feature as well, but apart from that it’s pretty much pure speculation at this point in time.
While Verizon did not comment on the leak of the press rendering, they did confirm that the name has been trademarked at the UTPTO which refers to a “wireless telecommunications device featuring transmission of voice, data, image and video,” which we guess is as close as a confirmation that we will get at this point in time. We’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled for an announcement of the tablet, so if you’re looking for some options as far as Android-based tablets are concerned, check back with us in the near future for more updates.

It was back in December 2012 when we first heard that Intel had intentions to break into the market as an internet TV provider. Earlier this year, in February to be precise, the company confirmed that it had been working for over a year to set up Intel Media, a new division which was working on Intel’s TV project. ATD reports today that the chipmaker might be giving up its project soon. Apparently Intel and Verizon are talking, and the result of these talks would be the handover of Intel Media to Big Red. No confirmation has come in as yet from either company.
Citing “people familiar with the talks,” the report claims that both Intel and Verizon are in advanced negotiations. However, it is not known for sure right now if Intel Media would totally be handed over to Verizon or if Intel intends to retain a piece of it, or have a say in the division’s operations. Intel’s internet TV project is headed by Erik Huggers, his job was to create a pay TV service that would use a set-top box built by Intel. Huggers hired over 300 people which included people from the outside as well, from companies like BBC, Google, Netflix, Apple and more. A number of Intel employees have already been testing the service in their homes, but the company has apparently not been so lucky in securing programming deals from networks, which it absolutely needs before a commercial launch.

While HTC One devices from T-Mobile and those in Europe are getting their hands on the Android 4.3 update with Sense 5.5, it looks like Verizon subscribers are in for a wait as the HTC One update for their phones will be delayed for a month. We’re not sure what went wrong with the update for Verizon’s version of the phone, but either way this is pretty bad news for Verizon subscribers who were looking forward to the update on their HTC One devices, especially with news that the update is currently making its rounds not just in the US, but around the world as well.
This news was confirmed by HTC America VP, Jason Mackenzie, who said, “@htc One Vz customers: we need more time to spin new SW & re-test 4.3 update. Approx a month. Appreciate your patience as we work to deliver.” No specific release date was mentioned, but given that the tweet was made towards the end of October, we’re guessing it will be the end of November, or possibly even early December, that the update will be released, unless of course HTC and Verizon somehow manage to work around the clock on this and deliver in earlier than anticipated. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info, but in the meantime we guess Verizon HTC One users will just have to wait.
