Vodafone Confirms Talks Underway With Verizon Wireless To Sell Its Stake

Earlier today rumors were circulating that Verizon Wireless is currently in talks with Britain’s Vodafone to buy back the latter’s 45 percent stake in the largest U.S. carrier. Vodafone has now confirmed that talks are indeed underway, adding that there’s “no certainty” that both parties will reach an agreement. Analysts expect that if a deal is reached, it may be worth up to $125 billion, making it one of the biggest deals to take place worldwide in the last decade, second only to Vodafone’s acquisition of German carrier Mannesmann in 2000 for which it paid $181 billion.

So what would Vodafone do with this massive cash influx? Analysts believe that it may be put towards strengthening Vodafone’s core European operations, which have struggled due to the precarious situation of the economy in Europe. Vodafone’s investors are also likely to benefit through share buybacks. One major hurdle that might get in the way of a deal is the hefty tax bill that Vodafone will have to pay if it dispenses with it’s stake in Verizon Wireless. Though Verizon has already said that it is capable of structuring any potential transaction that can limit Vodafone’s tax liabilities. Citing a source with knowledge of the matter, The New York Times reports that a prospective deal might be announced as soon as early next week.

PSA: Verizon’s Motorola Droid Mini begins shipping tomorrow, not August 29th

    Image

Product delays are often talked about (and judged) around the interwebs, and thus it’s only fair to give a company credit when it plans to deliver something ahead of schedule. As such, those who pre-ordered a Motorola Droid Mini for Verizon will be happy to find out that the 4.3-inch handset will begin shipping tomorrow, August 22nd, instead of August 29th as was originally planned. PhoneArena was the first to spot this tidbit earlier on the network’s website, however a Verizon representative has since confirmed to us that the change in dates is indeed true. It’s not clear whether the Kevlar-wrapped Droid Mini’s also going to be on sale at Verizon’s brick-and-mortar stores, but we’ll be updating this story if we hear anything.

Verizon HTC One officially arriving next week

We’ve seen a lot of dates getting thrown around recently about when we might see the Verizon-ified HTC One, but the carrier has officially confirmed that HTC’s flagship handset will be available online and in-store starting on August 22, which is less than a week away from today for those counting down. Verizon confirmed the […]

Verizon Wireless Allegedly Aided UK’s Tempora Eavesdropping Program

Verizon Wireless Allegedly Aided UKs Tempora Eavesdropping Program

Last month a string of highly classified documents were leaked by former CIA technical analyst Edward Snowden. Those documents revealed that the UK’s GCHQ was apparently tapping in to undersea fiber optic cables that go through the country for collecting data. At that time it was not known if any telecommunication companies were aiding the program, which is known as Tempora. According to German newspaper Süddeutsche, which claims to have received documents from none other than Edward Snowden, Verizon Wireless allegedly aided the GCHQ’s Tempora program.

Apart from Verizon, four small providers, BT and Vodafone have also been named in the report. The documents are said to be from 2009. Previous information leaked about Tempora reveals that the program is capable of intercepting some 600 million “telephone events” daily, apart from collecting petabytes of internet data. The companies mentioned in the report have declined to comment on this situation. Verizon is one of the biggest providers in the U.S., one can only imagine what it customers would think knowing that their provider is allegedly aiding UK’s eavesdropping efforts. The report claims that data collected through Tempora is shared between GCHQ and US’s very own National Security Agency.

Leaked photos: Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Mini is headed to Verizon

Leaked photos show Samsung's Galaxy S4 Mini heading to Verizon

Here is it: the Galaxy S4 Mini… for Verizon? As of now, Samsung’s smaller Galaxy S4 sibling is an international-only device; in other words, no US carriers have officially signed on to offer it. That said, a Samsung SCH-i435 recently made its way into the Bluetooth SIG’s website, and those who follow VZW’s classifications of Samsung products are all-too-familiar with the “SCH” prefix. Of course, a handful of leaked photos can’t confirm a release date nor a price, but if it’s already popping up with that label on the rear, surely the wait won’t be much longer. Hop on past the break for a side-by-side shot with an iPhone 5.

Verizon HTC One Release Slated For August 15th

Verizon HTC One Release Slated For August 15th

Verizon has still not revealed to its current and prospective customers when it plans on finally releasing the HTC One. Other major carriers in the U.S. have already been carrying the device for quite a few months now, Verizon is yet to launch yet. We had heard a lot of rumors recently that pegged the release of this smartphone on August 1st, but apparently that’s not going to happen. Droid-Life has reportedly received a document in which the Verizon HTC One release date has been slated for August 15th.

One might argue that the delay in launching this smartphone on Verizon would result in lackluster customer interest. That might be true to some extent, given the fact that Verizon recently announced its new Droid lineup. Furthermore, the carrier is said to be one of the four that are reportedly going to carry the Moto X at launch. So Verizon customers would have quite a lot of options to choose from. At this point in time, probably those who just want a HTC One on Verizon are anxiously waiting for the carrier to launch it. Verizon still hasn’t revealed the exact release date for the HTC One.

LG G2 tipped for September US arrival on Verizon

We’ve been hearing way too much about the LG G2 lately, and it’s making us more anxious than ever. We know that LG will officially unveil the new handset on August 7, but leaked details about the phone’s release have surfaced, along with word that Verizon will be a launch partner for the new smartphone.

    lgevent-580x496

According to a Korean outlet, LG Electronics’ CFO David Jung says that the LG G2 will release in South Korea in August (after the official announcement), and the US and Europe will be able to get their hands on the new device sometime in September, with other regions around the world getting an October availability.

The report also quotes a different LG exec as saying that Verizon would be a US carrier partner for the G2, which would join AT&T and T-Mobile in the rumored lineup. Of course, the release time frames are always subject to change, but they might not even be true in the first place, so be sure to take it with a grain of salt until we hear official confirmation.

    lgbigleakschina-580x427

The LG G2 will be the company’s new flagship device, succeeding the Optimus G to become one of the biggest smartphones on the market when it eventually releases. So far, the G2 is said to be equipped with a 5-inch 1080p with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor on the inside clocked at 2.3GHz with 2GB of RAM.

There’s also rumored to be a 13-megapixel rear camera, and the phone will run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, but now that Android 4.3 is out, LG may launch it with the latest version of Android, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see what they do come August 7.

Verizon DROID lineup exclusive to Motorola in new partnership deal

Remember the HTC DROID DNA? The HTC DROID Incredible series? The Samsung DROID Charge? Those are no longer, thanks to a new partnership deal between Motorola and Verizon that will see the DROID moniker only being carried on Motorola devices for now on. Of course, Motorola was the first phone maker to coin the “DROID” name, and they’re getting it back all for themselves now.

    imaga

Speaking with CNET, Verizon’s vice president of marketing operations Jeff Dietel revealed that yesterday’s announcement of three new Motorola DROID devices also marks the beginning of a partnership between Verizon and Motorola, where all new devices with DROID in the name will be Motorola handsets.

Dietel also revealed that Motorola’s new DROID lineup that was unveiled yesterday will have longer shelf lives than other devices on Verizon. Plus, the DROID ULTRA series will remain Motorola’s flagship lineup for a while, although he didn’t provide a timeline of when that could change.

    droid-web-open-kbjpg-r3media-540x413

The DROID series is a trademark for Verizon, and only Verizon devices get to bear the name, and Motorola was the first phone maker to do so, thanks to the release of the Motorola DROID back in 2009 that helped spread the word about Android and make it a mainstream platform that more and more people would adopt.

Because of that, it makes sense that Verizon is partnering up with Motorola and giving them exclusive rights to the DROID name. This puts Motorola in a good spot at Verizon, and will make the DROID series the flagship lineup for the carrier. Sure, the iPhone will get a lot of love, as will the Galaxy S 4 and any new device that comes through, but the DROID series will always be a priority for Big Red.

Verizon 2013 DROID reboot hardware wrap-up: MINI, ULTRA, and MAXX

Verizon quickly announced a new line of DROID smartphones alongside Motorola today, and by quickly, we actually mean it. The event lasted for around 10 minutes and they unveiled three new phones, as well as a new processor that they’re calling a “computing system.” If you’re having a bit of trouble catching up on the new DROIDs, we’re here to save the day.

    Screen-Shot-2013-07-23-at-12.52.31-PM-580x471

The three new phones that were unveiled today are the DROID MINI, DROID ULTRA, and the DROID MAXX. All of these fit in their own specific budget range, and we’ll first start off with the DROID MINI. This is Motorola’s successor to the DROID RAZR M of last year, and it’s all about a compact design with a 4.3-inch HD Super AMOLED display, as well as wireless charging capabilities. This phone will cost $99 after a two-year contract and will be available starting on August 29.

The DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX share the same body style, with a larger 5-inch 720p OLED display with a kevlar shell for ruggedness. However, the MAXX sports a huge 3500 mAh battery that Verizon says can last “two days” on a full charge. The ULTRA sports a smaller 2,130 mAh, but only comes in at 7.2mm thin, which is quite impressive. The ULTRA and MAXX also pack in a 10-megapixel camera with an f2.4 lens.

The DROID ULTRA will cost $199 after a two-year contract, while the DROID MAXX will be priced at $299. Both phones will be available starting on August 20. All three of these handsets are also running Motorola’s new X8 Mobile Computing System, which was also announced today in partnership with Qualcomm.

The X8 is an eight-core SoC, which consists of a dual-core application Qualcomm processor that clocks in at 1.7GHz, a quad-core graphics processor, a contextual computing core, and another core for “natural language processing.” This layout should be able to give each phone the power to delegate certain tasks without taxing any of the cores. Motorola says the new X8 chip gives these three devices 24% faster CPU performance and graphics that are twice as fast than before.

    Screen-Shot-2013-07-23-at-12.48.09-PM

The DROID ULTRA will be available in black, white, and red, while the MAXX will only be available in black. Pre-orders are open now, and as a bonus, anyone who buys one of these new phones between now and September 30 will get six months free to Google Play Music All Access.
