Verizon BlackBerry Q10 pre-orders now live

We found out earlier this month that the Verizon model of the BlackBerry Q10 would be hitting shelves at some point next month, but pre-orders are now live for the new handset, so you’ll be able to reserve your own unit before they’re available to the general public, and if it’s a physical keyboard you’re looking for, this is pretty much your best bet.

You can grab the Q10 from Big Red for $200 after signing a two-year contract, or you can pay full price for the new phone, which will set you back a whole $600, but at least you won’t be under Verizon’s control for two whole years. We think that’s a pretty good way to go, but if you’re wallet just isn’t feeling that kind of vibe, you’re most likely better off with a contract.

Of course, T-Mobile will also be carrying the Q10, and you can save yourself $20 if you go with T-Mobile, but we can’t blame you if T-Mobile’s new 4G LTE network just isn’t cutting it for you. In fact, Verizon will have the exclusive white version of the Q10, so if black is a bit too dark for your liking, you’ll be able to get something a bit more pure.

Verizon has put an estimated ship date of June 6 on the Q10, which is just a day later than T-Mobile’s release date for the device. Big Red hasn’t yet announced when they’ll have the new device in stock at their physical locations, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they started selling the Q10 on June 5 to compete with T-Mobile.

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins thinks that the Q10 will be a huge seller, given the claim that tons of users will enjoy the physical keyboard as well as having access to the 3.1-inch touchscreen display. The UK’s Carphone Warehouse actually sold out of all its initial stock of the Q10 in a matter of hours, proving that people really want the device in their hands.

The BlackBerry Q10 was announced back in late January along with the company’s flagship Z10, as well as the new BlackBerry 10 operating system. These devices are essentially BlackBerry’s attempts to try and wiggle their way back into the smartphone wars, where the company has been left behind in recent years. We’ll see if they can play catch-up once we see the Z10 and Q10 out in full force.

Verizon HTC One speculation returns as DROID DNA offer arrives

While Verizon and HTC have said that the HTC One isn’t hitting Big Red anytime soon, that doesn’t mean that the new device won’t land on Verizon at some point in the future. Recent evidence suggests that the One may be itching closer and closer to Verizon stores, thanks to a discounted DROID DNA, which customers can grab for free for a “limited time.”

htc_one_att-580x3661

It’s worthy to point out that this isn’t just any normal smartphone with a discount. The DROID DNA is HTC’s flagship device on Verizon, and such a discount like this either means that the phone is selling poorly (which we highly doubt) or Verizon is making room for a new HTC flagship — a.k.a. the HTC One.

Then again, the sale isn’t lasting that long. The deal ends tomorrow, meaning that most customers will miss it if they blink, so it’s certainly not a sale that Verizon is counting on to lower inventory, but it’s possible that they could just be raising awareness for the new-ish phone, since the DNA is HTC’s latest phone on Verizon, and it’s already quite old.

The HTC One isn’t an exclusive phone by any means, as it’s already available on AT&T and T-Mobile, and HTC usually puts most of their phones on Verizon’s network, so we’re a little surprised not to see the One in Big Red’s lineup, but it could only be a matter of time before that eventually happens, unless HTC has other plans.

However, Verizon is hosting their own little even this week at CTIA, which could be the moment where Verizon will announce the HTC One. Then again, HTC has said that if Verizon and HTC announce One availability, it’ll be a “big deal,” and an event at a relatively small tech conference like CTIA doesn’t really sound like the “big deal” that the two companies were talking about, but we’ll see what the companies have brewing and report back with our findings.

Verizon 4G LTE nearing 500 markets across US

Verizon is continuing to roll out its 4G LTE in more locations across the US of A by hitting many of the smaller cities and towns in between of the larger cities that they’ve already hit. Doing so will soon see them reaching the 500-market milestone. The carrier already has the largest LTE network in the US, and they expect to completely blanket their 3G network with LTE in just a couple of months.

IMG_7012-580x3951

Verizon launched LTE in 6 new markets today, including locations in Kentucky, Michigan, and Colorado. This brings the total number of markets that are equipped with Verizon 4G LTE up to 497, which is just three shy of hitting that illustrious 500 mark. AT&T is in second, but they still have work to do in order to catch up, and T-Mobile just launched their LTE network, so they’re still spring training, so to speak.

Verizon plans to cover its 3G network entirely with LTE by the middle of this year, and they carrier said that their 3G network is already 95% covered by their LTE, so they only have a little ways to go at this point. If you’re wondering if you’re city has LTE, it most likely does, but if you’re not sure, Verizon has a full list of LTE-equipped markets in the US.

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 1.54.49 PM

Last year, Verizon blew past its year-end goals for 2012, covering 417 markets by the middle of October with a year-end goal of covering 400 markets. That’s quite an accomplishment and proves that not only is Verizon willing to casually meet their goals, but they aim to exceed them.

Verizon celebrated the 2nd birthday of its LTE network back in December, and announced that 440 markets had the carrier’s faster LTE speeds. Currently, more than 40% of Verizon’s smartphones run 4G LTE, as well as 63% of all internet devices sold from Verizon. Plus, over half of all of Verizon’s mobile network and data traffic is over LTE speeds. That’s quite impressive to say the least, and while there will be an equilibrium with AT&T eventually, Verizon is making sure they stay on top for as long as possible.

Verizon increases prepaid data limits for 3G phones

Mobile phone contracts provide a relatively easy way to get a shiny new smartphone, however there are also those who already have a capable device on hand that prefer to go the no-contract route. That being the case, it looks like Verizon Wireless has recently bumped the data allowances on their prepaid 3G smartphone plans. There are two plans available and they are priced from $60 per month.

verizon

These plans were originally announced back on February 1st and at that time they came with options for either 500MB or 2GB of data. In the data-centric world that we currently live in, 2GB may be low for some and 500MB may even cause you to limit your smartphone usage. With that in mind, Verizon has bumped the allowances to 2GB and 4GB.

Specifically, the $60 plan has 2GB and the $70 plan has 4GB. Each of these plans also offer unlimited talk and text messaging. And for those keeping track, while the data has increased, the price of the plans has remained the same. Customers who are already signed up will see the new data allowance immediately.

Otherwise, new customers choosing these plans will have to wait until June 6th to see the 2GB ($60) and 4GB ($70) limits go in effect. Seems the better option here may be the 4GB plan, after all that is only a $10 per month increase and it offers double the data. Of course, for some 2GB may be enough to feel comfortable and not have to worry about going over.

Aside from Verizon upping the data, AT&T has also recently announced Aio Wireless. While the AT&T offering isn’t available in all markets just yet, it does seem to be one worth watching. For now Aio Wireless is available in Orlando, Tampa and Houston. The Aio smartphone plans begin at $55 per month and offer unlimited calling and messaging as well as 2GB of data. In other words, they seem to be fairly close in price to the Verizon prepaid options.

HTC Still Tight-lipped On HTC One For Verizon

HTC Still Tight lipped On HTC One For Verizon

A lot of critics have said in their reviews of HTC One that it is a wonderful smartphone. The all metal body which has been meticulously crafted provides an amazing build quality, apart from the powerful internal hardware. In the U.S., the smartphone still hasn’t been announced for Verizon Wireless. The company is still keeping itself tight-lipped, not confirming whether they’re ever going to officially announce that HTC One is coming to Verizon.

When asked this question in an interview, Tom Harlin, the PR Director at HTC gave an answer which was loaded with carefully chosen words. He said that there were a ton of rumors online but the company had not made an official announcement of HTC One for Verizon. After saying this, he switches the conversation over to Droid DNA, saying that it is HTC’s hero smartphone at Verizon and it has features that are neck and neck with smartphones released in 2013. Tom also said that when HTC announces their next product with Verizon, they’ll make a big deal out of it so that everyone knows. The PR Director managed to walk out of that one, but I’m sure many Verizon subscribers might be wondering why there’s no HTC One love for them.

Verizon HTC One comments make “big deal” of future release

HTC Director of PR Tom Harlin has confirmed that there are still no plans to launch the HTC One on Verizon’s network, or rather the company hasn’t “made any official announcement” about the device coming to Verizon. Harlin says that when HTC and Verizon decide to release a new product, you’ll certainly know about it, since it’ll be a “big deal” for them.

htc_one_att-580x366

Harlin says that the company’s DROID DNA is still the “HTC hero smartphone at Verizon,” and he claims that the DNA’s features “still compete with products in 2013,” which hints to the possibility that HTC may skip over Verizon this year, since they think that the DNA will last into 2014 before the company will need to release a new phone on Verizon.

The HTC One is been released on all major carriers except for Verizon, which is leading to so many questions and rumors on the Verizon version of the new device. Frankly, we’re not sure why the company isn’t releasing the phone on Verizon, and if they eventually do, it’ll way later than all the other carriers.

The HTC One is one of the newest Android devices to release this year so far, and it comes with an aluminum unibody shell, which is something that we rarely see on an Android device. The Samsung GALAXY S 4, which also was recently released, comes with the traditional plastic shell that Samsung used on its Galaxy S III.

Nokia Lumia 928 Billboard Apparently Leaks Well Before Launch

Nokia Lumia 928 Billboard Apparently Leaks Well Before Launch

Nokia Lumia 928, which is going to be a smartphone exclusive to Verizon Wireless, has been talked about quite a lot over the past couple of weeks. It is expected to have marginal improvements over the Lumia 920. The 928 is expected to be marginally thinner and lighter than its predecessor. A billboard for this particular smartphone was spotted recently, though the authenticity of the advertisement can not be immediately confirmed. Nokia purportedly says in this ad that Nokia Lumia 928 has the best low-light smartphone camera. Well, see shall see about that once it releases, won’t we?!

Nokia is holding an event on the 14th of May, there it might announce this smartphone. A couple of days back the Lumia 928 was reportedly spotted at Nokia’s private concert, where all of the attendees were given Lumia 920s for one night so that they could shoot and record and see for themselves the camera technology in Nokia’s current flagship smartphones. The device in this billboard is remarkably similar to the one we see in Lumia 928′s leaked images. What do you think, why would a billboard go up before the official announcement itself? [Image via MyNokiaBlog]

Verizon considering Vodafone stake buyout, says sources

As it stands right now, Verizon holds 55-percent of Verizon Wireless, with Vodafone holding the other 45-percent. According to some sources who spoke to Reuters, Verizon is looking at buying out Vodafone‘s stake to take full control of Verizon Wireless. Assuming Vodafone is approached by Verizon, nothing says it will need to sell, however, or that it will be interested in doing so.

Verizon

Says the sources, Verizon has not yet approached Vodafone, but has instead hired advisers and are looking into the possibility. If the proposal is offered, it is said to involve $100 billion in a combination of cash and stocks ($50 billion from financing, the rest in shares), with Verizon being ready to “push aggressively” to have the deal go through.

Back in 2004, Verizon almost scored Vodafone’s stake in Verizon Wireless when the company was trying to purchase AT&T Wireless, something that would have necessitated the sale of its stake. That purchase didn’t go through, however, and as a result Vodafone retained its Verizon Wireless stake. If the proposal is made, some analysts expect that Vodafone will demand more.

One such reason is the large tax bill Vodafone could be faced with if it sells it stake, estimated to come in at about $20 billion, reducing the value of Verizon’s offer. The sources have a different take on that, however, saying that the way the proposal is made would reduce the tax burden to about $5 billion instead, possibly less. Nothing official has been said on the matter.

Verizon expanding San Francisco Innovation Center, currently working on cross-carrier HD Voice support

Verizon expanding San Francisco Innovation Center, currently working on crosscarrier HD Voice support

2011 sure doesn’t feel like that long ago, but it’s evidently long enough for Verizon to realize that demand for innovation is booming in Silicon Valley. Not quite two years after the company cracked open the doors to its San Francisco-based Innovation Center, it’s already looking to expand. During a briefing today at its other Innovation Center — the one located just outside of Boston — we were told that plans are underway to expand the SF facility. Presently, the Waltham, Mass. center is the vaster of the two, and it’s Verizon’s goal to stretch the California edition to (roughly) match the original location.

We were also told that the company has looked at a variety of other cities where potential Innovation Centers could be planted, and while “three to four” undisclosed metropolises are in play, the company wants to nail the execution of its first two before hastily expanding into new locales. According to Praveen Atreya, director of Verizon’s Innovation Program, there’s just too much involved in the incubation and launch process to not devote the proper amount of manpower to it. In other words, there’s more to launching a product than just design and manufacturing; a lot of TLC goes on in order to make something have a successful shelf life.

Verizon boasts $4.8 billion profit in Q1 2013 results

Verizon didn’t do so hot during Q4 2012, but the company is back posting up their Q1 2013 results, and things are looking mighty good for the company. Verizon profited a whopping $4.8 billion during Q1 2013, and that’s mostly thanks to the addition of 677,000 new subscribers throughout the quarter, with 7.2 million smartphone activations.

verizon

Verizon is now up to 98.9 million subscribers total, which means it shouldn’t be too long before they reach the 100 million mark. Furthermore, the carrier activated 5.9 million LTE devices out of the 7.2 million total activations. Verizon also claims that 28% of all activations during the quarter were customers who came from other carriers.

As for Verizon’s other services, FiOS internet saw a bump of 188,000 new customers and 169,000 new FiOS Video customers, which rose the revenue of that particular sector of the company up $2.6 billion. And for those who thought that Verizon quit expanding FiOS will be pleased to know that they added fiber optics to 83,000 homes during the past quarter alone, with 217,000 more homes planned for 2013.

Total revenue for the company rang in at $29.4 billion, which is 4.2% increase year-over-year. Operating income grew 19.8% to $6.2 billion in Q1 2013, compared to $5.2 billion during the same time last year. $19.5 billion of that $29.4 billion revenue came from Verizon’s wireless business alone, which is up 6.8% from last year.
