Animated Donkey Kong Wedding Cake: How High Can You Eat?

While we’ve certainly seen our fair share of cool video game inspired cakes over the years, this is the first time I’ve seen one that almost looks playable. By using projection mapping technology, this wedding cake has been turned into an animated version of Donkey Kong.

Posh DJs and their pal Dan from Invader Visuals worked their magic with a set of boxy white cakes from MealsForReals to make this epically geeky cake come together. But enough talking about it, it only really makes sense if you see it in action:

Cool, no? It looks like it also has Dig Dug, Pac-Man and other modes, but the Donkey Kong level is the best since it fits so perfectly onto the tiers of the cake. I only wish the cake came with a joystick so you could play it before eating it.

P.S. If you loved the video’s soundtrack as much as I did, you can find the whole tune here.

Poke’Mecha: In Soviet LEGO, Pokémon Carry You

A few months ago we saw a LEGO robot Charizard. Here’s an evolution of that idea, courtesy of Flickr member Stormbringer. His Poke’Mecha series depict the famous video game critters as large LEGO robots piloted by minifigs. You can’t pocket these monsters.

Stormbringer said that Blastoise is the first and the sturdiest of the three toys. Venusaur took him the longest to build because he had trouble finding azure-colored parts. Charizard is his favorite of the three because it was a challenging build, particularly its head and wings.

Summon your mechabrowser and head to Stormbringer’s Flickr page for more on his Poke’Mecha. He said he’s planning on building more of these, which is great news, but I hope he takes his project to its only logical conclusion: make the Poke’Mecha combine to form a larger robot monster. Or at least a huge Pokéball.

When You Play the Game of Thrones Video Game, You Win or You Die

I mentioned yesterday when I came across those the sweet Game of Thrones house sigil snowflakes that I had just started watching the series. I’m quite hooked now and I think it’s great news that a video game based on the epic HBO series is coming. The game is coming from Telltale Games, the company behind the episodic game The Walking Dead, and the Sam and Max adventures among others.

Telltale isn’t offering up much in the way of details, other than to say it is partnering with HBO on the game. That means the game will be official, and it better be good. Telltale had great success with the episodic game based on The Walking Dead, hopefully the Game of Thrones game is just as good.

If that video game isn’t enough to get you excited, Telltale has also announced an episodic game based in the Borderlands universe. The game is called Tales from the Borderlands. It will follow characters we know from Borderlands 2 and new characters.

Both games are landing sometime in 2014, and will be available on PC, Mac, mobile, and game consoles.

PS4 Mahogany Vinyl Skin: PlayStation 2600

If its predecessors are any indication, the PlayStation 4 will eventually be released in a variety of colors and finishes. It probably won’t be released in faux wood though. That’s where dbrand comes in. The Canadian company sells gadget skins made from 3M vinyls. One of their newest products is a mahogany skin for the PS4.

I don’t like how the vinyl looks on the Dualshock 4, but the console looks sweet. If you’re of the same opinion, don’t fret because the skins for the console and the controller are not bundled. In fact the skin for the PS4 is actually made of several pieces, which again can be bought separately.

You can order the mahogany vinyl for the PS 4 from dbrand. It will set you back $45 (USD) if you choose to buy skins for the entire console and one controller. You can also mix and match your order with other types of skins, such as carbon fiber and several metal finishes. Dbrand doesn’t have skins for the Xbox One yet, but I don’t think that will be the case for long.

Super Mario New York City Subway Map: Underworld 1-1

A couple of years ago we saw a map of New York City done in the style of Super Mario World. Here’s a great complement to that map, a chart of the Big Apple’s subway depicted in the same style by Robert Bacon. What’s up with Staten Island?

Here’s the official map of the subway for comparison:

Watch the video to get a closer look at the map:

Robert also made a Super Mario Bros. 3 version of the map, which is a tad easier on the eyes.

You can order both maps from Bacon’s shop on Ript Apparel for $25 (USD) each. He also has Mario-themed maps of Chicago on there.

Minecraft Creeper Backpack Unfortunately Won’t Blow up Your Homework

It seems like every time I turn around my daughter has my iPhone and she is playing Minecraft. I hear her constantly yelling at the Creepers for creeping up and doing their thang – namely blowing up. If you or someone you know is a fan of Minecraft and goes to school or work where a backpack is a benefit, this is the gift for you.

ThinkGeek has a Minecraft Creeper Backpack that is available right now for $59.99(USD). That’s not exactly cheap, but if you have ever shopped for name brand backpacks, it’s not exactly expensive either. This is also the coolest backpack in all the blocky world.

The backpack is made of woven nylon and has three compartments with double zippers. The main compartment measures 11″ x 14″ x 2″ with 360-degree padding for laptop protection. The middle section is 11″ x 13.5″ x 2.5″. The front pocket has a 5-pocket organizer and measures 10″ x 13″ x 1″.

You can be sure that no one else in grade school will have a backpack like this – unless of course they also read Technabob or shop at ThinkGeek.

Forget Mouse and Keyboard: Play Your Next PC Game with Tongue and Butt

With Steam Boxes looming large in the future, game-peddlers-cum-hardware-makers over at Valve have been experimenting with some new ways to control your PC. Yeah, there’s the weird joystick-less Steam Controller, but Valve designer Ben Krasnow has some even weirder stuff: a tongue mouse and a butt controller.
