Ubisoft Uplay Passport Is Dead: Online Gaming for All!

Like most gamers, I have a love-hate relationship with game publishers. I love that they bring cool games market for us to enjoy, but hate the often idiotic ways they try and prevent piracy and secondhand video game sales. One of the most irritating ways that game publishers like Ubisoft try to squeeze money out of gamers who purchase a used video game was by requiring them to purchase an online pass to play any multiple player aspect of the game.

These games come with an online code when purchased new, but that code is only good for one console. That means if you take the game to a friend’s house or give it away, the second owner can’t play it online without spending money. Ubisoft has now announced that its Uplay Passport online pass system is no more.

The game publisher has eliminated that online passport on all of its future games including the soon to launch Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag. That means these games will be playable online even if you buy them secondhand. I’m not a big supporter of secondhand video game sales mostly because for an extra few bucks, I’d rather buy new. I’ve sold use games to places like GameStop before so I know what little money they actually give you for the games to turn around and sell them at a very small discount compared to a brand-new version.

Ubisoft said, “The Uplay Passport program was initiated as a means of giving customers full access and support for online multiplayer and features, along with exclusive content, bonuses, and rewards,” Ubisoft said in a statement.

“However, games today are blurring the line between offline and online, between what is ‘single-player’ and what is ‘multiplayer,’” the statement continues. “Based on that and on the feedback we received from you, we recognized that Passport is no longer the best approach for ensuring that all our customers have the best possible experience with all facets of our games.”

I say good riddance to all such systems.

Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E. M Mobile Gaming Keyboard is T.I.N.Y.

Mad Catz recently announced the littlest member of its S.T.R.I.K.E. gaming keyboards. The S.T.R.I.K.E. M is a wireless keyboard designed to be used with mobile devices and the company’s M.O.J.O. Android micro-console. Mad Catz sure loves periods.

The keyboard connects to devices using either NFC or Bluetooth. It has a couple of features that should set it apart from other mobile keyboards. First is the ability to save multiple macro commands, and second is its Optical Finger Navigation (OFN) mouse sensor, i.e. a tiny trackpad.  I’m not entirely sure, but I think the trackpad is that tiny patch on the upper right of the keyboard that’s flanked by left- and right-click buttons. Sorry lefties.

Mad Catz didn’t provide the dimensions of the keyboard, but Kotaku has a shot of the keyboard in someone’s hand. Not as helpful as actual measurements – it may have been a gnome holding it in the photo – but it’s better than nothing.

The keyboard also has controls for brightness, volume and media playback. It also has backlighting and a rechargeable internal battery, but no word on how long it will last per charge.

Another detail that Mad Catz failed to mention is the price of the S.T.R.I.K.E. M, although they did say it would be available this holiday season.

Are there really mobile gamers that need or want a keyboard? Mad Catz certainly thinks so. Besides, it could just be gearing up for its Android micro-console, which will eventually be able to stream games from a PC to the TV or monitor that it’s hooked up to. I think the most important question here is how cramped the keys are. The keyboard itself doesn’t seem to be that small, but its odd shape and the strange use of space on its perimeter are what forced the keys to be small. I’m also really interested in seeing how that tiny trackpad holds up in real world use.

Portable NES Inspired by NES Controller: Game Boy Macro

A couple of years ago we featured the HandyNES, the portable NES console by Sharon Smith aka lovablechevy. Earlier this year she got her first commission, and it was for another HandyNES. But her client had a great idea: to make the handheld look like the NES controller. Behold!

This unit is very similar to the original HandyNES. It’s also based on an actual NES motherboard, has a top-loading cartridge slot, a 3.5″ LCD screen, a 1500mAh battery that should last about 3 hours and is one of the smallest portable NES mods around. This time though the buttons and d-pad are from a NES controller, and it doesn’t have a USB port for a second NES controller.

Sharon shows off the new HandyNES in the video below, demonstrating features such as its A/V-out and low battery indicator.

If you’re interested in asking Sharon to make you a HandyNES, just contact her on her YouTube channel or on her Facebook page. She says she charges $550 (USD) for the basic unit. Check out Sharon’s thread on the Made by Bacteria forum for more on her mod.

PS4 Has No MP3 Playback and DLNA Streaming: Backlash Awaits

When Microsoft outlined the restrictive lending and always online requirement for the Xbox One earlier this year, it was hit with a wave of hatred so hard that the company was forced to eat its words. Now it’s Sony’s turn to be on the wrong end of publicity, albeit for less offensive reasons. In its recently posted Ultimate FAQ for the PlayStation 4, Sony explicitly states that the console won’t support MP3 playback and streaming via DLNA.

As with the shelved always-online requirement on the Xbox One, part of the reason why gamers are so upset about the loss of two supplementary features is because the previous console had them. I myself used my PS3 to stream videos from my iMac using the excellent PS3 Media Server app. Others used Plex. Bottomline, it’s a downgrade. So why would Sony subtract those features? A possible answer would be to push its streaming services for both music and video, which are both accessible on the PS4 out of the box. Assuming you have an Internet connection. And that the streaming service is available in your country.

In an attempt to quell disappointed customers, Sony Computer Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida stated on Twitter that he will discuss it with the console’s development team “for future consideration.” Hopefully that means a patch and not the PS5.

EA Sports Tosses Tiger for Next Gen Golfing Games

EA Sports has announced that it and Tiger Woods have mutually agreed to end their partnership on golfing video games. At the same time, the company has announced that it will be continuing to make golf video games and its partnership with the PGA will continue.

EA Sports has offered up an image comparing a screenshot of the same course taken from a current generation game compared to a next-generation golf title that is currently in the works. One look at the image and it’s clear that the visuals in the next-generation golfing game are significantly improved and offer much more realism than the current generation game.

EA Sports will be making PGA Tour golf games for consoles and mobile devices. There’s no indication of when the new game will launch at this time, but it sure does look good. EA promises that more news on its next-generation golf game will be coming soon.

Pokémon X/Y Creature Map: Catchtography

Redditor Bobdor made a very useful map that lists the Pokémon available in Pokémon X/Y based on where you can catch them. Instead of selling or even asking donations for the map, Bobdor chose to share it with all of us for free. That’s the spirit of Kalos at work. Depending on what you want to get from the games, the map could either be a minor or a major spoiler. I think it’s an essential cheat sheet, much like the type chart.

Aside from organizing the creatures by locale, Bobdor also included a list of Pokémon that you can only obtain through evolution or Friend Safari. The only major omission in Bobdor’s map is the list of unobtainable Pokémon that you can only have in Pokémon X/Y if you already got them in previous Pokémon games, but again Bobdor has done more than enough.

Ready to catch ‘em all? You can download Bobdor’s map as a PNG file or as a PDF file. Redditor Thorium also setup an online version of the map if for some reason you don’t want to keep a copy of it. Forget about Goomy, Honedge and Hawlucha; we should be making Bobdor memes and fan art.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Metallic Flake Nintendo 64 Casemod: Twilight Prince

Link isn’t known for being flashy or even stylish, but fans still associate him and his series with bling, thanks to Nintendo’s tradition of releasing gold cartridges and systems for The Legend of Zelda games. The talented console modder Zoki64 and his customer steal that trick from Nintendo and then some by making a sparkly Ocarina of Time-themed Nintendo 64.

Zoki64 gave the console a metal flake finish, causing it to twinkle in direct light like an angsty vampire.

Xbox One gameplay tour shows console’s interface in action

As the Xbox One‘s launch date closes in, Microsoft has been dropping teasers and snippets of its various console-related offerings, not the least of which is a gameplay tour video it has posted today. With the video, gamers are given their first look at the Xbox One’s interface, which is very similar to Windows 8 […]

PlayStation 4′s Killzone: Shadow Fall Was Originally 290GB of Data

There are many areas around the US that have speedy broadband Internet service, but some of us still labor behind incredibly slow connections that take forever to download large files.

With the impending launch of the PS4, the premier launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall is getting a lot of press. Incredibly, the original size of the game files before compression was used was a whopping 290 GB according to details recently published. Considering the game has always been intended to be offered as a digital download, I can only imagine how long that download would take at my house.

kz sf 620x348magnify

Shadow Fall was eventually compressed down to 40 GB to enable it to fit on a Blu-ray disc. That said, 40GB is still a massive download for people who opt to purchase digitally. One reason the game was so large was because all of the textures are incredibly high resolution. The game also reportedly has a very large surface area around 5 to 10 times larger than Killzone 3 offered.

“I think at some point the disc image that we were generating was around 180 gigs,” said Guerrilla Games’ technical director Michiel van der Leeuw. “And if we would have put all the levels in, which we didn’t, because then the disc image generator broke, it would have been around 290 gigs of data.”

The good news for people hoping to purchase the game in digital format is that the PlayStation 4 will have the PlayGo system that allows you to download only a portion of the game before you can play. The bad news is that portion is still 7.5 GB meaning many people will wait many hours just to download the first portion of the game. Probably better to just buy the game on disc, if you ask me.

WarBot Uses AR to Turn Shopping into a First-Person Shooter

Shopping can turn into such a chore sometimes. It’s great and all if you have unlimited funds to spend, but shopping turns into an unending quest of deals, sales, and coupons if you’re working on a tight budget.

Augmented Pixels wanted to give shopping and bargain hunting a more enjoyable spin, though, so they came up with WarBot, which is an app that turns shopping into an action-packed first-person shooter.

What you’re supposed to do is fire up the app and point it towards an item that you’re interested in. Once the tablet recognizes the packaging, it launches an augmented reality first-person shooter game. If you win, then you get a discount on that item. If you lose, well, you’re free to try again.

warbot 620x322magnify

Vitaliy Goncharuk, CEO of Augmented Pixels, explains: “It’s getting more and more challenging for brands to stand out from the competition to attract and keep customers’ attention and love. Augmented reality has proved to be one of the most effective ways to engage customers at the point of sale.

It’s mighty clever of them to try to do this through a game. What do you think?
