Guy Puts Donkey Kong in a Barrel: At Least It’s Not on Fire

It’s like beating Kong in a barrel… Wait, that’s not how the saying goes. But you can say it now. This custom-built Donkey Kong tabletop arcade machine has been put into a barrel. Why? So you can drink and game of course.

Joel Griffin Dodd wanted a fully functional game of Donkey Kong in an old barrel so that he could have beer and cocktails on top of it. How drunk can you get? You probably shouldn’t try to jump over it, though that’s better that than smashing it with a mallet, I suppose.

It looks like a fairly straightforward build. Just put together a mini arcade system and stick it inside a barrel. Then put some glass on top of course. Not that I thought of it or was able to build one myself. Nice work, Joel.

Super Mario Bros. Layer Cake, I Mean Level Cake

Forget layer cake, level cake is what it’s all about for gamers. This amazing Super Mario Bros. cake represents the water, land and sky levels from the game in amazing detail.

If I could eat this cake, I would start on the bottom with a fork, taking a big chunk that includes some fish and coins. Then I would move up to the land level for some piranha plant and goomba goodness. I’d try a coinbox too. Then it’s time to eat some vine and clouds to top it all off. Now that I’ve made a mess of the cake, no one else will want it and it will be all mine.

This cake was baked and decorated by cake maker Cakecrumbs who did an amazing job… of making me hungry. Thanks.

Xbox One banned users can still keep purchased games

So many questions about the Xbox One have been asked over the past month or so since Microsoft unveiled the new console. Granted, they were pretty vague on a lot of concerns, and we received different answers from different reps on some questions. The latest question to go around is how will banned Xbox One

Xbox One promises no gouging on next-gen games

Last week, we saw a lot of new games jump into the limelight for both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, but one thing that wasn’t mentioned was the price of these games. Gamers were left worried that these next-generation titles would see yet another price bump up to $69.99. However, it seems Microsoft

Legend of Zelda Quilt: It’s Dangerous to Nap Alone, Take This!

In all honesty, it’s been a while since I dusted off my original NES copy of The Legend of Zelda, but it’s still one of the all time classic video games, IMHO. But even if you don’t play the game regularly, you could have a daily reminder of Link’s adventures thanks to this awesome Legend of Zelda quilt.

Every time you lie down on the couch to take a nap, you could snuggle up under this hand-pieced quilt by artist Kelly Jaworski. It features a detailed pixel art image of Link, and is surrounded by triangular pieces of fabric, shaped like Triforces.

The small version of the quilt measures about 3.5 x 4.5 ft and sells for $199 (USD), while the queen-size (5.5 x 7.5 ft) version goes for $299. I wonder how many rupees that is.

Each one is backed with soft flannel to help keep you warm during long quests through Hyrule.

Claptrap Gets Plush

Fans of Borderlands, drop what you’re doing and head on over to Etsy this minute. Claptrap is waiting there to help you complete your quest!

claptrap 1

This handmade plush version of the world’s most irritating sidekick was handmade by Sarah Tracy of Fuzzy Aliens. Instead of scrap metal, this Claptrap was made from felt and polyester fiberfill. He measures about 1-foot-tall (plus another 6 inches for his antenna), and even has posable arms. Though I’m not sure if he can really stand up with just that one wheel.

Best if all, you won’t need to loot too many enemies to afford this Claptrap. He’s only $20(USD) over on Etsy.

Retro-Bit Wireless Hypermode N64 Controller: Sit Back and Enjoy the Classics

Corded controllers led to one of the iconic images in many homes in the 80s and 90s: kids sitting on the floor, controller in hand and looking up at their TV. But if you’re TV is too big to view up close and your ass is too lazy to get off the couch, keep an eye on Retro-Bit’s Wireless Hypermode retro controllers. First up is the wireless controller for the N64.

Richard Mitchell of Joystiq was able to try a test unit of the controller at E3. Although he admits that he only tested it for less than 5 minutes, Mitchell says that the controller’s didn’t seem too bad, although it’s not quite as good as the official controller. As you can see in the images the controller also has Auto and Turbo modes, while the receiver has a slot for memory cards and Rumble Paks.

The Retro-Bit Wireless Hypermode N64 controller should go on sale this summer for $30 (USD), while wireless versions of the SEGA Genesis, NES and SNES controllers will follow this fall.

Xbox One E3 demos were played on Windows gaming PCs

Microsoft demoed Xbox One gameplay during E3 2013 this past week, and we even got to see some live gameplay for ourselves with Crytek’s Ryse. However, it seems Microsoft didn’t actually use the Xbox One to play these new games. Instead, it was discovered that Windows 7 gaming rigs equipped with NVIDIA GeForce 700-series GTX

Custom PlayStation 3s for Sony’s Friends: It Only Does Sweet Casemods

The very talented case modder Javier Riquelme customized several PlayStation 3 consoles for Sony, who in turn gave them as gifts to its partner developers and publishers. With the exception of what seems to be Javier’s trademark flourish, each console looks radically different and suited to its theme. This dude is for real.

As I said, each casemod is unique; if someone told me that the Borderlands-themed PS3 was made by someone from Gearbox Software while the Metal Gear Rising one was made by a cyborg ninja from Kojima’s lair I would have believed that. But Javier does like adding thick letters with LEDs that contrast nicely with the rest of the sweet art on the surface of the console.

playstation 3 casemod 6 grand theft auto v by jriquelme 300x250
playstation 3 casemod 7 assassins creed 3 by jriquelme 300x250

All of these look awesome, but I want to shake Javier’s hand just for the Assassin’s Creed casemod. I don’t even like that franchise and I want the console. You can see more shots of Javier’s work on his Imgur gallery, on his Twitter page and on his Facebook page.

Borderlands Belt Buckles: Straptrap

You don’t need pants to play Borderlands – I haven’t played Borderlands 2 yet so I’m not sure about its pants requirements – but if you’re really into it you’ll want to wear eight pairs of pants just so you can rock these fan made belt buckles based on the game. They were made by Imgur member Jellyroger. I bet you’re the one who’s jelly now.

As you can see, Jellyroger based the designs on the arms manufacturers in the Borderlands games. He gave each company a unique and fitting design. The Jakobs one is my favorite. Check out the other buckles in the gallery:

Jellyroger and his friend Cubewithincube – they sound like they’d make for an awesome cartoon – are currently taking a heat check on the interest for the belts. If you want to buy the buckles, let them know either on Jellyroger’s Imgur page or on Cubewithincube’s Borderlands 2 forum thread.
