How to Shoot a Good Vine Selfie

Vine updated its app today with the ability to capture video using the front facing camera. You know what that means: Selfie time. And you know what else that means? There’s going to be a lot of terrible selfies.

Vine App Update Lets You Record Through Front Facing Camera

Vine App Update Lets You Record Through Front Facing CameraA few months ago Twitter released an app for iOS called Vine, which can be used to capture and share six second videos. Soon after its release, Vine was adopted by a lot of new users who seemed to like the idea of sharing these short video clips. While Android users keep on waiting for Vine, which is said to be coming soon, the iOS users have been treated to a new update today. The update brings features that had been suggested via feedback on a lot of things.

The highlight of this update is that users can now record six second videos using the front facing camera, if this doesn’t revolutionize selfies, I don’t know what will. The updated version of Vine also brings support for ‘@’ mentions. Mentioning a user in Vine is similar to the way one would do it in the Twitter app. Simply type @ and username, whereby relevant suggestions will be shown from which the person who is to be mentioned can be selected. Whosoever is mentioned in a post on Vine will receive a notification in their Activity tab. Vine version 1.1 for iOS download is available now from iTunes App Store.

Vine upgraded with mentions and front-facing camera support

An update for Vine is rolling out today that brings a few new features to the social app as well as various bug fixes. One of the major updates included is the added support for front-facing cameras. By pressing the button located on the bottom left corner of your phone, you can switch over to your front-facing camera and send 6 second messages that way. We’re expecting many users to abuse this new feature with selfies and whatnot.

The second new feature being added is a Twitter classic. You are now able to mention users in your Vine messages by using the @ symbol. By typing @ and a person’s username or real name, you will be offered suggestions of people you would like to mention in your message. This new feature will promote social interaction in Vine and encourage more conversations and usage of the app.

For those of you who don’t know, Vine is a social app released by Twitter that allows people to send each other short video messages. Each message can be up to 6 seconds long, and is easily shared to the internet. You can choose to upload your content to only Vine, or you can choose to upload your content simultaneously to Twitter and Facebook as well. Once your content is uploaded, it will be in public view for anyone to see.

Currently, Vine is only available for the iPhone and the iPad, but it should be making its way to Android devices sometime in the future. It’s unsurprising for these apps to head to iOS before they’re ported over to Android. The same thing happened with Instagram, which came to Android 2 years after its debut on iOS. Now 50% of Instagram users come from Android, which shows developers the importance of bringing their apps to both operating systems. If you want to take advantage of the new Vine update, you can download it from the App Store right now. For those of you patiently waiting for Vine to head over to Android, it shouldn’t be too long now before that’ll happen.

Vine update brings support for front-facing camera, mentions

Couple of key updates for the 1.1 version of Twitter’s pithy video app, Vine. First up is support for front-facing cameras, for those who can’t get enough short web videos of themselves. Tap the icon in the lower-left corner of the app and it will toggle between your phone’s cameras. Also new is mention support, so those tagged with an @ will get a notification when you drop their names into a post. The latest version is available now from iTunes — perhaps a short video of you downloading the update is in order.

These Award-Winning Vines Are Everything a Six Second Film Should Be

Vines aren’t exactly a new from of high art or anything. But while poorly edited Vine’s of your friends’ cats doing nothing are probably what you see most often, there are some pretty good ones, with a bit more meat to ’em. These Tribeca Vine Competition winners are a pretty good sample. They’re so good you might even go “huh!” More »

Vine For Android Coming “Soon”

Vine For Android Coming SoonGood news Android users! If you were a little jealous at your iOS friends who have been enjoying the features of Vine, you’re in luck because during the NYC Apps meetup, Dom Hoffman, the co-founder of Vine, revealed that the developers are currently working on an Android version of the app. At this point in time it is unknown when the Android version of the app will be released, but they did state that it would be available “soon”, and we’re definitely hoping to see it released in the near future, rather than “soon” as in by the end of 2013!

For those unfamiliar Vine, it basically allows users to film short video clips and upload them to its website. In a way it could be thought of as the video equivalent of Instagram, and some companies have taken to the app to release teaser videos rather than through YouTube which is more or less the norm these days. In any case we’ll keep our eyes peeled, but in the meantime Android users, are you guys excited?

Vine for Android set to capitalize on iPhone envy

The Twitter-owned image looping experience known as Vine has let it be known that they’ll be moving beyond the limits of the iPhone and will be coming to Android soon. Though the idea that this app experience would only be available on one operating system may seem outdated, analysts have likened it to keeping a line outside a nightclub – if you feel it’s important enough to wait for, you’ll use it.

A similar tactic has been used for the recent release of the iOS-friendly Gmail app “Mailbox”. This app saw thousands of sign-ups in a very short period earlier this year as they kept a virtual line going to keep users waiting for their turn to activate the app they’d downloaded. They recently opened that door, presumably after interest had begun to simmer.

Vine on the other hand is an app that’s already generated a large amount of interest in both positive and negative PR events. When Vine launched, it was an app that only worked on the iPhone. Soon after launch, the developers behind Vine showed a web browser homepage for every single user onboard. Soon after that, Vine embedding began.

Here nearer the Summer of 2013 it would appear that the Android release of the Vine mobile app is close. Having spoken with The Verge earlier this week, news that they’ll be bringing their Android app to the market was joined by a “soon” timeframe and note that they’ll be adding features along the way.

Below you’ll find additional information on Vine as it expands beyond its original iPhone home, perhaps even to the iPad sooner than later! For now it’s time to start up your Android device with a camera, whatever that may be.

Comedy Central’s Five Day Comedy Festival Will Be Hosted On Twitter

Comedy Centrals Five Day Comedy Festival Will Be Hosted On Twitter

According to a report published today by The New York Times, starting next week Comedy Central will kick off its five day comedy festival. The festival won’t be held at comedy clubs or other similar venues, this five day festival will be hosted almost entirely on Twitter. Comedians will make use of Twitter for posting jokes, they’ll be using the #ComedyFest hashtag for this purpose. Video snippets carrying the same hashtag will be uploaded to Vine. Twitter launched Vine back in January, snippets of up to six seconds can be uploaded to this service.

Famous comedians such as Carl Reiner, Amy Schumer, Mel Brooks and others will be taking part in this festival. Steve Agee is scheduled to host a ‘Vine dining’ party on Tuesday, he will be telling stories in six second videos. Comedy Central’s comedy festival kicks off with a panel discussion between Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Judd Apatow held in Los Angeles, California. The channel will also release a free, albeit add-supported, app next month. Titled CC: Stand-Up, the app will let users watch comedians performing various routines. It has been designed to look and feel like a cable channel that is devoted to stand-up comedy.
