Virgin Mobile iPhone 5 release detailed (but will people pay off-contract prices?)
Posted in: Today's ChiliAll eyes may be on the “iPhone 5S” but that hasn’t stopped Apple’s iPhone 5 from spreading, with Virgin Mobile USA the latest network to add it to its range. The iOS smartphone will hit the no-contract carrier on Friday, June 28, priced from $549.99; while that might seem considerably more than you’d pay at,
Virgin Mobile offering $100 rebate for T-Mobile subscribers willing to switch
Posted in: Today's ChiliVirgin Mobile, the prepaid carrier with a name that makes teenagers giggle and price tags attractive to anyone on a budget, has rolled out a $100 rebate aimed at T-Mobile customers willing to convert and have their brain “retrained.” The rebate only applies to those who are switching over from a T-Mobile account, with the $100 being credit towards an Unlimited plan.
The prepaid carrier has a large comparison chart set up on its website, showing the benefits of switching from T-Mobile to its own service. This includes several listed reasons, including undercutting T-Mobile’s Unlimited monthly plan pricing by $5 and faster reduced speeds when users hit their 2.5GB data limit. It is also specifically hocking its Samsung GALAXY S 2 handset.
Both T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile offer the Samsung GALAXY S 2, with the latter offering it for $299.99 on a prepaid plan over the $400+ charged by T-Mobile. Tallying this all up, users who elect to switch from T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile’s chart shows the 2-year cost coming in at $1,320 versus the slightly higher $1,440 – not a huge difference, but noteworthy.
The chart doesn’t make it easy to determine whether that final price is after taking the rebate, or is in addition to it. It does, however, tally it all up to a total savings of $334 over the course of those two years, with that working out to $120 in savings plus the additional $100 rebate and the $114 lower price on for the S 2. If you already have a Galaxy handset and you’re a happy T-Mobile user, that price may not be much incentive to switch, but if you’re in the market for a new carrier, Virgin Mobile will welcome you with open arms.

Only recently T-Mobile announced that it was going contract free and revealed its new un-carrier plans. While other major U.S. carriers are yet to react on this, Virgin Mobile has already started a campaign in which it is offering $100 to pre-existing customers that will ditch T-Mobile for their network. Customers are being enticed to switch over to Virgin Mobile’s prepaid service which runs on Sprint’s network.
Pre-existing T-Mobile customers have to choose a new phone offered by Virgin Mobile, such as Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE and the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G. Then they’ll pick a Virgin prepaid plan. Payment has to be made by 31st of May. The $100 credit will be given to customers within the first 30 days of them switching their number to Virgin. Virgin is not offering $100 credit to those who have devices are compatible with Sprint’s network and don’t need to purchase a new one. The offer is only for customers switching over from T-Mobile and buying a new phone from Virgin. Virgin is pricing phones lower than T-Mobile which is just another reason for customers to consider ditching T-Mobile.

Sprint allows its prepaid carrier partners to de-brand Android phones, rid devices of bloatware
Posted in: Today's ChiliIn a move that could only be viewed as a step in the right direction, Sprint has just made a major move in the battle against bloatware. It’s newly-unveiled Custom Branded Device Program is being introduced just as prepaid carriers are beginning to see something of a resurgence. In a nutshell, the initiative enables its MVNO partners (carriers like Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile) to customize white-label Android phones. In case you needed to hear it another way, it’ll give those partners the ability to “completely de-brand devices from Sprint.” Of course, this opens the door for said partners to litter these phones with their own software, but it also provides an option to see phones in a manner that Americans rarely see unless they opt for pricier global (and unlocked) models.
Sprint is hoping that the program will allow its MVNO partners — carriers who sell phones under their own brand but actually rely on Sprint’s network for service — to “have greater, and potentially quicker, access to a large selection of completely de-branded marquee Android handsets out of Sprint and Boost Mobile device inventory with volume pricing included.” Presently, Sprint has three devices available for this program — LG Optimus G, LG Mach and Sprint Flash — but additional devices are expected to be added by the month’s end. Perhaps most interestingly, we reported back in July of 2011 that Sprint was making a “conscious decision to scale back bloatware on smartphones.” Here’s hoping that decision is soon realized.

Virgin Mobile has added a new prepaid Android smartphone to its lineup of devices. The new Android device is called the Kyocera Event and it is available for $79.99. The new smartphone has a 3.5-inch HVGA IPS touchscreen display that has wide viewing angles and adjustable brightness.
The smartphone supports 3G web connectivity and runs Android 4.0. The device has Swype text input that allows users to enter text using the on-screen keyboard without lifting a finger. The device also has a special Eco Mode that helps extend the battery life.
Under the hood, the smartphone has a 1 GHz QUALCOMM Snapdragon processor combined with 512 MB of RAM. Integrated storage is only 4 GB, but the Event has a microSD card slot that supports up to 32 GB of additional storage. The smartphone measures 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46-inches and weighs 4.1 ounces.
Connectivity options for the device include integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The battery promises talk time of 8.7 hours and standby time of 6.25 days. The Kyocera Event will be available exclusively from RadioShack starting on March 3.

Some say that it’s “better late than never,” and, as of right now, this may very well be a good thing for Virgin Mobile UK users looking to snag one of those chart-topping Nexus 4s. A mere few months after the LG-made handset was first announced, Virgin Mobile is set to join other carriers across the pond in offering Google’s sleek flagship. What’s more, the Nexus 4 can be had at no cost upfront, so long as interested UKers choose from one of Virgin Mobile’s qualified 24-month tariffs. Meanwhile, those of us in the States without a Nexus 4 will have to keep on waiting, as Google Play (and T-Mobile) still appear to be having trouble keeping up with demand.
