Vodafone Confirms Talks Underway With Verizon Wireless To Sell Its Stake

Vodafone Confirms Talks Underway With Verizon Wireless To Sell Its Stake

Earlier today rumors were circulating that Verizon Wireless is currently in talks with Britain’s Vodafone to buy back the latter’s 45 percent stake in the largest U.S. carrier. Vodafone has now confirmed that talks are indeed underway, adding that there’s “no certainty” that both parties will reach an agreement. Analysts expect that if a deal is reached, it may be worth up to $125 billion, making it one of the biggest deals to take place worldwide in the last decade, second only to Vodafone’s acquisition of German carrier Mannesmann in 2000 for which it paid $181 billion.

So what would Vodafone do with this massive cash influx? Analysts believe that it may be put towards strengthening Vodafone’s core European operations, which have struggled due to the precarious situation of the economy in Europe. Vodafone’s investors are also likely to benefit through share buybacks. One major hurdle that might get in the way of a deal is the hefty tax bill that Vodafone will have to pay if it dispenses with it’s stake in Verizon Wireless. Though Verizon has already said that it is capable of structuring any potential transaction that can limit Vodafone’s tax liabilities. Citing a source with knowledge of the matter, The New York Times reports that a prospective deal might be announced as soon as early next week.

Nokia Lumia 625 reaches the UK on August 28th with LTE on three networks

Nokia Lumia 625 arrives in the UK on August 28th

Brits who’ve wanted Nokia’s budget phone ambitions writ large — namely, the Lumia 625 — won’t have to wait much longer. The 4.7-inch Windows Phone will be available on August 28th through EE, O2, Vodafone, Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U. If you’re interested, you can pick up the device for free on a £21 per month contract, or buy it outright for £179 on pay-as-you-go service; early adopters get a second colored back as a bonus. EE, O2 and Vodafone should all support the Lumia 625’s LTE either immediately or the day after, so it’s just a matter of choosing the 4G network you prefer.

LG G2 confirmed to arrive on Three and O2 in the UK

LG G2 confirmed to arrive on Three and O2 in the UK

Following the formal reveal of the LG G2 yesterday, UK network Three was quick to report its plan to offer the handset “soon,” so we thought we’d follow up with all the other major providers to see where else you’ll eventually be able to find one. O2 is also on board, although it would only commit to a vague release window of “later this year.” Vodafone said it currently has no plans to offer the G2, and while EE has “nothing to announce,” we couldn’t get any assurance that it wouldn’t show up on its 4G network, or on the Orange or T-Mobile brands. Retailer Carphone Warehouse has put a tentative October arrival date on its website, and although we’re still waiting on a response from Phones 4U, you’ll more than likely be able to find it there, too. So, if you’ve developed a particular taste for the slim bezel design and quirky button placement, you’ll have at least a few options come launch time.

Vodafone UK confirms 4G network to launch August 29th, plans start at £26 a month

Vodafone UK confirms 4G network to launch August 29th, plans start at £26 a month

Vodafone UK has just announced its 4G network rollout will begin on August 29th, with London to be the first city to go live. Twelve more locations will get switched on before the end of the year, including Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds and Sheffield (full list after the break). Price plans will begin at £26 a month (SIM only, for 2GB of data) and the operator already has a choice of compatible hardware to choose from — such as the Nokia 925, Galaxy S4 or BlackBerry Z10. Although the official turn-on won’t be until the end of the month, those eager to get the service will be able to sign-up from the 12th in store or online. Existing customers with an LTE handset can upgrade their plan for an extra £5 a month. As a sweetener, Vodafone is throwing in unlimited data for the first three months, along with a choice of Spotify premium or Premiership football content bundles. While the UK has had LTE services for a while now, until recently, choice was very limited. Now, with O2 coming soon, and EE already up and running, the UK market is set to enjoy the benefits of proper competition.

Vodafone UK brings unlimited talk, text and data to Red Freedom Freebee plans

Vodafone UK adds unlimited talk, text and data to Red Freedom Freebee plans

These days, carriers seem to be gravitating towards “less for more” — as in, giving users less while charging more. For those situated in the UK, however, Vodafone’s offering up a new pay-as-you-go arrangement that actually smacks of value. The Red Freedom Freebee plans are pretty simple. For instance, £30 a month nets you unlimited texts and talk within the United Kingdom coupled with 1GB of data. Cough up £40 each month, and that data cap doubles to 2GB. A couple of cheaper plans are available for those who need little more than text messaging and enough data to keep tabs on their email, all of which can be seen in detail at Vodafone’s site.
