Google Fiber Android App Update Introduces Vudu Support

Google Fiber Android App Update Introduces Vudu SupportFor those of you who happen to have the Google Fiber Android app installed on your respective Android powered devices, here is some news that might just catch your interest. Apparently, an update to the app has just been introduced recently, where it will introduce new support for Vudu, which means users will have yet another over-the-top video service to choose from, with Netflix and YouTube being the other two that are already in existence. The support pages for its Vudu setup do seem to have dated back to August 5th, which is rather strange since the masses did not hear a beep concerning Vu’s launch on the Google Fiber Android app from Vudu as well as Google. Perhaps they both want to keep this low key, which would be rather surprising to hear if that were true then.

The change log, however, points out that this particular update will enable viewers to search for and view content across their TV and mobile devices, but do take into consideration that the iPad app has yet to receive any kind of update. Apart from that, you will find channel shortcuts in the main menu which paves the way for faster switching back and forth.

Google Fiber has Vudu integration on its settop boxes, Android app

The Google Fiber Android app got an update today that adds support for Vudu, adding another over-the-top video service along with Netflix and YouTube. The support pages for its Vudu setup seemingly date back to August 5th, but we haven’t heard anything about the launch from either company. According to its change log, the update will allow viewers to search for and view content across their TV and mobile screens, although the iPad app hasn’t received any update yet. Also new to the Android version are channel shortcuts in the main menu for faster switching back and forth. This addition should bring Ultraviolet digital copies to Google’s TV service, although the support page notes users will have to login to Vudu separately on each set-top box. That is, assuming they’re lucky enough to live in a place where Google Fiber is available.

Vudu For Android Works With Selected Handsets Now

Vudu for Android now works with select smartphones.

Vudu for Android now available on (some) phones, not just tablets

Vudu for Android now available on some phones, not just tablets

Vudu’s player for Android launched last year with tablet support, and now a new update lets it work on a limited selection of phones. Newer Samsung handsets, the Nexus 4, HTC One and several other devices round out the list, as the app works for either streaming or downloading movies. It worked without issue on our Nexus 4, however since its UI hasn’t changed from the tablet version some of the buttons were smaller than we’d like. Also, we couldn’t get the video to play in any res beyond SD so it wasn’t the sharpest, but there was a high enough bitrate to make movie-watching enjoyable on the small screen. As usual, the app is free, if you have an account with the VOD / Ultraviolet service hit the Play Store link below to see if works on your hardware of choice.

VUDU Disc to Digital meant to leave Beta today [UPDATE]

Though it seems like a bit of a strange headline to lead with, it would appear that VUDU’s upgrade of their Disc to Digital software from Beta to full-fledged release may have hit a hiccup. That shouldn’t be too much of deterrent from users working with this system, on the other hand, as the details remain the same: conversion of your DVD and Blu-ray disks into digital editions accessible from wherever you’ve got an internet connection. For a fee, of course.

    betago

This service allows users to convert the video from their already owned disks into SD or HD formats for $2.00 apiece or $5.00 if they’re HD DVD. SD from DVDs costs the standard $2, as does the only format available for Blu-ray disks, HD. This system works with the UltraViolet video system so users will be able to watch on devices such as Roku, PlayStation 3 (and 4, we must assume), tablets, smartphones, Xbox 360 (and 720, more than likely), as well as your connected TV – and through the web, of course.

This system is currently working with mostly streaming services, allowing VUDU apps to stream via the web, but also with updates to iOS and Android in recent months making offline downloading a reality as well.

So what you’ve got here is a system where you put your DVD or Blu-ray into your computer, hit the “go” button, and allow this system to scan it. Once it’s scanned, you’ll have a virtual copy of that disk anywhere you can access VUDU’s webpage and/or app. This system uses Gracenote technology to recognize the contents of the disk and UltraViolet for video in cloud web storage.

    vudugo

UPDATE: The system has now left Beta for real – make with the converting!

This system will immediately (if not soon) be working on both Windows and Mac OS X machines and requires an internet connection as well as a DVD / Blu-ray drive to scan.

Vudu disc-to-digital home Ultraviolet conversion software enters public beta, comes to Mac

Vudu disctodigital at home leaves beta, comes to Mac

It took some time to work out most of the bugs, but Vudu is finally expanding its beta of its home-based disc-to-digital service. The idea and the price are still the same as when the private beta launched, but what’s new is support for OS X, plus an improved user experience and disc identification powered by Gracenote. We gave it a try and found the process couldn’t be any easier or more straight forward. To get others to try it out, Vudu is giving away the first conversion on the house and if you’re willing to convert ten or more movies then you’ll get a 50 percent discount. After converting a DVD to HDX we were instantly able to turn around and start watching it, far faster than any disc ripping software we’ve used. Add in the newfound ability to download movies to iOS and Android devices and UltraViolet is really shaping up — though we’re still waiting for that common file format to move copies between devices easily and single sign-on to fix the login mess.

Vudu Player update allows movie downloads on iPhone, iPad

Vudu Player finally allows movie downloads on iPhone, iPad

Coming months after the feature’s introduction on Android and PCs, Vudu has updated the iOS version of its app with the ability to download movies for viewing offline. Unlike the Android version, this feature is not restricted to tablets however, with downloads of your Vudu / Ultraviolet collection on iPads and iPhones. Other tweaks include making the Player “easier to use” and adding closed captions on iPhone. The Flixster app already allowed for Ultraviolet movie downloads on iOS, however Vudu has access to some movies that may not be available there. The updated version of the free app is available on on iTunes, although you will need an associated account (with updated password info) with unlocked videos to get any use out of it.
