If there’s one thing the folks at Vuzix can claim without reservation, it’s that their smart glasses have become available to the general public before anyone else, including Google. While the Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses may not have been designed with the same fashionability in mind that Google Glass was, you’ll find this wearable technology […]

    NTT docomo’s Vuzix M100 Hands-On

NTT docomo’s Vuzix M100 Hands On[CEATEC 2013] We spent some time with the Vuzix M100 smart glasses before the super long queues were formed, and here are some of our impressions on it. The hardware is based off the Vuzix M100 of course, but the software was powered by NTT docomo. We mentioned in passing that this particular pair of glasses would be able to identify someone’s face using facial recognition technology, before it communicates with a server to pull out information on a person for you to see. Here is what we think about it.

Vuzix And NTT DoCoMo Will Feature M100 Smart Glasses At CEATEC 2013

Vuzix And NTT DoCoMo Will Feature M100 Smart Glasses At CEATEC 2013Vuzix and NTT DoCoMo will team up at CEATEC 2013 that is set to happen next week, where they will let the curious masses check out the M100 smart glasses. That would certainly give the folks over at Google something to think about, wouldn’t you say so? The M100 smart glasses is set to roll out later in the year, so to have it featured at Japan’s biggest electronics show makes us wish that CEATEC 2013 would start tomorrow so that we can lay our hands on it.

Vuzix President and CEO Paul Travers said, “We’re very excited to have our M100 featured by NTT DoCoMo at the largest electronics show in Japan. Over the years we have built a growing presence in Japan and we are pleased to have a developer and customer relationship now with the largest mobile service provider in Japan, NTT DoCoMo. Both Vuzix and NTT DoCoMo believe the smart glasses market in Japan has the potential to develop into a multi-billion dollar opportunity for the providers of wearable tech hardware, software, and of course network operators.”

It would be interesting to see just what kind of apps that the folks over at NTT DoCoMo would have come up with, and whether the M100 will be able to break out from just being a potential hit in the Japan market alone. [Press Release]

AR firm’s prototype Glass app makes you an amateur car mechanic (video)

DNP Google Glass owner's manuals app

Developer Metaio knows a thing or two about augmented reality, and building on the magic of its Audi eKurzinfo app, it’s created some prototype software for Google Glass that straps a car’s instruction manual to your face. Instead of relying on markers, GPS or point-cloud processing, the Glass app uses reference CAD models to identify what you’re looking at and overlay directions on a 3D plane. As useful as it may be for walking you through a washer fluid refill (video after the jump), Metaio has created the app to showcase its updated AR platform that’s intended to work with wearables like Epson’s Moverio and the Vuzix M100, as well as Mountain View’s monocle. The firm’s Glass app may never progress beyond proof of concept, but those attending Metaio’s annual InsideAR conference in Munich this October can look forward to a live demo.

Visualized: a history of augmented and virtual reality eyewear

Visualized a history of augmented and virtual reality eyewear

We’ve seen the prototypes that led Google to Glass, but there are many devices that predate Mountain View’s smart specs, and Augmented World Expo in Santa Clara, California was able to gather and display a historic number of such headsets this week. From Steve Mann’s handmade WearComp 1 and EyeTap prototypes to Glass-like precursors from Optinvent and Vuzix, it’s quite the comprehensive collection — over thirty devices in all. While they may make their way into a museum some day, we’re bringing pictures of them all to your screen right now. Enjoy.

Metaio And Vuzix Showcases AR-Ready Smart Glasses

Earlier this morning, we read about how Metaio, having launched their augmented reality SDK in just less than two years ago, have already successfully surpassed the 50,000 developer mark – and still counting, of course. Having said that, you might […]
