Pebble Best Buy sales begin as smartwatch hits retail [UPDATE]

As rumored yesterday, Pebble smartwatches are indeed coming to Best Buy. The Kickstarter-funded smartwatch has not hit the online retail sector on Best Buy’s website for $149, which is a bit more than what you could’ve gotten one for if you backed the Kickstarter project, which were selling for $99 a piece at the time.

However, it doesn’t seem the smartwatch is going on sale just yet. Best Buy lists the Pebble on their website, but with a “coming soon” next to it. Furthermore, calling Best Buy to confirm in-store availability was also a mystery. The Pebble will be available in stores, but just as the website says, they’re not selling them on the shelves just yet.

We also weren’t told an exact release date for the Pebble either, so it merely just seems that Best Buy has announced that they’ll be offering the Pebble smartwatch, but it’s not quite known when exactly we’ll get to buy one from the retailer. So far, they’re showing only red as a color option, but hopefully we’ll be treated with more colors as soon as it’s officially on shelves.

The Pebble smartwatch can be credited with the recent boom in the popularity of the accessory. It raised over $10 million on Kickstarter, becoming one of the most successful Kickstarter projects of all time. Smartwatches have been around for a few years now, but bigger companies have been rumored to be joining in on the fun with their own smartwatch creations.

UPDATE: According to 9to5Mac, they’ve received confirmation that Pebble will be available in Best Buy stores starting on July 7, with online availability starting later today.

TomTom Runner and Multi-Sport watches arriving this month

Smartwatches may just now be gaining popularity, but they’ve been available for quite some time now. TomTom has already gone in on the watch fad, announcing new wrist wearables earlier this year. The company has now revealed availability and pricing details for its new Runner and Multi-Sport smartwatches. First off, the TomTom Runner watch is

TomTom’s Runner and Multi-Sport watches now available

With all this talk of some prominent companies casting their wrists into the increasingly hot world of wearables, let’s not forget the number of folks that have been toiling away in that world for some time now. Companies like TomTom, which is already on the, erm, pulse of the watch world. The GPS-maker announced plans for two new sporty additions to its line earlier this year, and now the Runner and Multi-Sport have found their way to the market. The Runner’s got indoor tracking, a speedy GPS locator, desktop stat syncing, a heart rate monitor, 10-hour battery and waterproof / scratch resistant casing. The Multi-Sport’s got all of the above, plus a bike mount, altimeter, motion sensor for swimming and a cadence sensor. Both are available now in the states, priced at $170 and $200, respectively.

WSJ: Google working on an Android-powered game system, smart watch and new Nexus Q

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google might make another foray into living room hardware as it’s currently developing an Android powered gaming console. Since that’s just not enough of a rumor bomb, the talkative “people familiar with the matter” also claim a wristwatch and followup to its “postponedNexus Q project are on the way. If you believe the rumors, its reason for jumping into all these categories is to beat products Apple is reportedly developing in the same categories, with at least one of them launching this fall. Finally, the leaks indicate Google’s next major Android update will be “tailored to low-cost devices in developing countries,” and are ready to go in a much wider variety of devices.

That could mean laptops or even appliances running the rumored Key Lime Pie flavor of Android, built by manufacturers like Samsung which is already working on a watch of its own. Also mentioned is HP, which the report goes on to claim is building laptops that run Android. Companies like Ouya, Mad Catz, Pebble and GEAK probably think Mountain View is already late to the party, but official OS-level support and heavily marketed hardware could take these segments to the next level.

Foxconn demos iPhone-friendly smartwatch with health sensors

Hon Hai shows iPhonefriendly smartwatch

Foxconn isn’t waiting around for rumors of an Apple smartwatch to come true — it’s building a timepiece of its own. The company has just shown iPhone-compatible wristwear that previews Facebook messages and phone calls while tracking the owner’s breathing and heart rate. Upgrades are also coming in the long run, such as a fingerprint reader that would lock down the wearer’s health data. Foxconn hasn’t discussed launch details for the watch, but it’s almost more of a symbol than a product — it represents the diversification of a business that still leans mostly on contract manufacturing for revenue.

Pebble Android App update brings Google Hangouts notifications

Pebble's Android App version 182 brings Google Hangouts notifications

With all the work that Google’s put into Hangouts lately, it’d be a shame to miss out when you’re pinged to join one, no? If you happen to be sporting a Pebble smartwatch that scenario will be less likely, as version 1.8.2 of its Android app has arrived with notifications for the chat service. Though Pebble supports Google Talk notifications (along with call alerts, text messages, calendar reminders and email previews), Mountain View recently said that Hangouts is the future of Google Voice, making it a prime candidate for alerts. Apart from the extra wrist nag, the update also brings improved stability and developer enhancements. To grab it, check the source below or head to Google Play on your Android device.

Green means you’re stone cold sober. Yellow means your BAC is between 0.41 and 0.60%, meaning you’re slightly buzzing. A red display shows 0.61% and more, meaning you’re drunk, and .80% or higher means you’re legally drunk in most places. Keep in mind that Tokyoflash doesn’t warrant that the results are completely accurate, so officially the watch is “for entertainment purposes only.”

Many partygoers want to keep their alcohol in check, but we don’t know many who want to lug around a dedicated breathalyzer, no matter how small it may be. Tokyoflash may have found a happy medium for those drinkers by tucking a breathalyzer into its new Kisai Intoxicated watch. Blow into a sensor and the LCD will change to a color reflecting the alcohol intake: green is sober, yellow is buzzed and red is well over the line. There’s also a mini-game to test reflexes in those less-than-certain moments. Buyers seeking some temperance in their lives will want to act quickly, however — Tokyoflash will only sell the Kisai Intoxicated at a discounted $99 price during its first 48 hours on sale.
