Adafruit DIY LED Watch: Pixel O’clock

Adafruit continues its wonderful marketing campaign with another fun and functional gadget that you can build using the company’s products. This time it’s a wristwatch that uses LEDs to display the time or point North or to a preset destination. The exposed circuitry serves as its detailing.

The main components of the watch are the FLORA Arduino-compatible platform and the NeoPixel Ring, which houses the LEDs. You can switch between watch, compass and GPS modes using a button that you’ll place behind the watch. To use the GPS, you’ll alter the code that Becky Stern wrote and save the coordinates to your desired location. You can only save one set of coordinates though.

Head to Adafruit for the full how-to and parts list. The parts cost about $110 (USD) in total, so you might want to make a protective case for the watch as well. The great thing about this watch – aside from the fact that you built it yourself! – is that you can recycle or repurpose its parts for your other projects.

Tikker Wristwatch Counts Down How Much Time You Have Left To Live

Finding out the time is as easy as simply looking at your phone, watch, computer or any other device equipped with a clock, which can make planning out your daily activities a ton easier. But what if there was a watch that could predict how much time you have left before you kick the bucket? We’re not sure why you’d want such a device, but for those who need to know when their time is going to be up, the Tikker has got you covered. (more…)

Tikker: The Wristwatch That Counts Down Your Life

We’re all living on borrowed time. Those on their deathbeds would kill to have just one more hour or one more minute or even just one more second to breathe the air and see the world before leaving it forever. So the big question for everyone who’s still here, alive and breathing, is: are you making every second count?

Sometimes, the obligations of life make some people forget what it means to live. Instead, they just exist – and as some say, that’s worse than death. There to remind everyone that the end is coming – and that they should live their lives to the fullest, instead – is Tikker.

Tikker is a wristwatch that’s unlike any other. Aside from showing you what time it is, it also counts down the time you have left before you croak. Of course, the watch can’t predict exactly when you’ll die. Instead, your “expiration date” is set after you fill out a questionnaire and deduct your current age from the results.

Creator Fredrik Colting drew inspiration for Ticker from his grandfather’s death, explaining: “It made me think about death and the transience of life, and I realized that nothing matters when you are dead. Instead what matters is what we do when we are alive.”

There’s wisdom in his words. If you agree and would like to support Ticker, then make a pledge to back the project. You can get your very own Tikker watch by making a pledge of at least $39(USD) over on Kickstarter.

Omate TrueSmart smartwatch is also a phone, incorporates Fleksy keyboard (hands-on)

DNP Omate TrueSmart can be a standalone smartwatch, incorporates Fleksy keyboard for texting handson

While most smartwatches like the Pebble and the Galaxy Gear can’t live up to their true potential without the assistance of a smartphone, the Omate TrueSmart is a full-fledged calling and texting machine right out of the box. We’ve seen a couple of other such smartwatches of course, but the TrueSmart sets itself apart with a design that’s both water- and scratch-resistant, a unique UI that runs full-on Android 4.2 and most intriguing to us, a partnership with Syntellia’s Fleksy keyboard so that you can actually type coherently on such a tiny screen.

We had a brief hands-on with the TrueSmart at the Glazed conference in San Francisco, and we’ll admit to a bit of skepticism that we’d be able to do much with a 1.54-inch screen. However, we did manage to flip through the four-icon menu without too much trouble. The icons were large enough for us to tap, and we simply had to slide our finger to the left to go to the previous screen. It refused to recognize our swipes on occasion, but hopefully that’s just due to it being a pre-production unit.%Gallery-slideshow99594%

Wristwatch Shaped Post-it Notes Remind You It’s Time to Do Stuff

I’m a rather forgetful person. If it’s not written down the chances of me remembering to do it are pretty slim. That means I have a bunch of Post-it notes stuck all around my office to remind me of things that I have to do. The problem is if I’m not in the office to look at those Post-it sticky notes, I still forget.

That’s where these PA-Design’s wristwatch Post-it notes would come in. These things have sticky ends and you can write your own notes on the watch shaped paper. You can then wrap it around your wrist and stick the ends together so you have the reminder with you wherever you go.

These things are quite a bit more expensive than your normal pad of Post-it notes about $13(USD) per pack of 100 notes. The pad measures 8.25 x 1.5 x 0.4-inches. The only downside to these is that they appear to be out of stock on Amazon right now – though it looks like can still order them direct from PA-Design here.

    Oscilloscope Watch Outgeeks Calculator Watches

If you have to ask what an oscilloscope is, Gabriel Anzziani’s invention isn’t for you. The founder of Gabotronics made waves when he created the amazingly tiny Xprotolab oscilloscope. Now he’s working on the Oscilloscope Watch, a more portable and versatile version of the Xprotolab.

Like the Xprotolab, the watch is an oscilloscope, a waveform generator, a protocol sniffer, a frequency counter and a logic analyzer in a device that’s about the same size as a sports watch. It has a 1.28″ e-paper display and a 400mAh Li-ion battery that should last up to 12 hours of continuous use or over 30 days if you’re just using it as a watch. It’s powered by the ATxmega128A4U 8-bit microcontroller and will have complementary PC and Android apps. Gabriel is still figuring out the best form for the instrument’s probes. He’s leaning towards integrating them in a keychain, but he’s also considering turning them into wristbands or even the straps for the watch.

Pledge at least $100 (USD) on Kickstarter to get an Oscilloscope Watch as a reward. Eat your heart out, Tokyoflash.

    Tokyoflash Kisai Maru Wooden Timepiece

Tokyoflash Kisai Maru Wooden TimepieceNormally, when it comes to timepieces, most of us would eventually arrive at a point in our lives where we splurge a wee bit of dough that will certainly go some way in making ourselves look good in front of the mirror. In such cases, the watch would be made out of stainless steel and other precious metals, with those who have deeper pockets featuring precious gems embedded within to boot. Having said that, Tokyoflash has churned out weird looking timepieces in the past that does require a fair amount of brain power in deciphering the current time. Their latest effort arrives in the form of the Maru, which happens to look a whole lot more natural.

Bear in mind that the inner facing-hand would still let you know what hour it is, while the outward pointing-hand is associated with the current minute. The Maru will not be powered by termites running on a treadmill within, but will instead continue to rely on a standard battery. While it might feature a wooden band and case, there are still metal bits and pieces within. Those who are interested can pick up the Tokyoflash Maru for $99 a pop, which is a promotional price for the next couple of days. [Product Page]

Garmin Forerunner 620 And 220 GPS Watches Announced

Garmin Forerunner 620 And 220 GPS Watches AnnouncedGarmin has just unveiled a couple of GPS running watches, where they come in the form of the Garmin Forerunner 620 and Forerunner 220. These two models happen to be the lightest, thinnest, and most advanced offerings for runners from Garmin to date, and Garmin claims that if you do not happen to have a personal running coach, either one would make for a pretty decent substitute.

First of all, the Forerunner 620 will feature advanced features such as recovery advisor, race predictor and VO2 max estimate that ensures runners are able to train smarter while achieving new race goals. The NEW HRM-Run monitor will enable the 620 to provide feedback on running form. Those who prefer to train indoors, the 620 and 220’s built-in accelerometer is capable of tracking distance and pace, which means you also save more money as there is no separate sensor to purchase. Either way, both models will feature Garmin’s special one-inch Chroma color display that makes it a cinch to interpret data that is displayed.

The Garmin Forerunner 620 is tipped to arrive in blue/black and white/orange colors, while the Forerunner 220 is available in black/red and white/violet colors, where both are expected to ship this fall with recommended retail prices of $399.99 and $449.99, respectively, for the HRM-Run Bundle.
