The weather. It’s all anyone talks about these days. But there’s never been one single service that gets it right, or even bothers to tell you what you actually need to know. Well, Betaworks’ Poncho, a new weather service, might have just figured it all out—with a simple text message in the morning.

Ugh, you’ll say, another beautiful, gradient-hued, minimalist iOS weather app. Thanks—I’ve already got five. But Three is different, we promise. Sure you get just the basic weather info without tons of bells and whistles, but the one bell and/or whistle you do have is a phenomenal one. Three has made it so you’ll never be caught chilly at night without the proper layers, because it tells you exactly what to wear.

Weather apps are a dime a dozen, but accurate weather apps are a little more rare. For most of them, you’d be better off tossing a coin to try to figure out if it’s actually going to rain or not. And that’s where SkyMotion shines—down to the minute.

Add this to Apple’s string of revelations at this year’s WWDC: the company has just divulged its 2013 Design Awards winners, comprising of a variety of iPhone, iPad and Mac apps that it deems to be a cut above the rest. This year’s list includes note-taking app Evernote, Yahoo Weather and two stellar entries by student developers. This is also the first time Apple has required young developer scholarship applicants to submit apps that detail their lives and backgrounds in technology, out of which the company chose three standout submissions. Just like last year, Apple judged the entries based on their features and visual designs. You can check out the full list in the source below and — if you’re a dev — glean some hints for next year.

Microsoft wants Bing Desktop to transcend the limits of web-based search, and that’s especially clear with a newly posted app update — it’s all about doing what most browsers can’t. The software brings inline searching that lets users run Bing queries on websites, PDFs and Word files just by selecting text. Newshounds also don’t have to wade into every article now that there’s both at-a-glance previews and a trending stories section. We suspect most users won’t mind the real-time weather forecasts and live Facebook notifications, either. Existing Bing Destkop users should automatically receive the new features in the days ahead, but those who refuse to wait can grab the upgrade straight from the source.

The Raspberry Pi camera has been out for less than two weeks, and it’s already skirted the final frontier. Armchair astronaut Dave Akerman strapped the $25 shooter to the equally inexpensive Raspberry Pi, put it inside a protective case shaped like the berry that inspired the product’s name, and then attached it to a weather balloon. Three hours and quite a few vertical miles later, his experiment was recovered by a stranger not too far from the launch site, who called the phone number written on the side of the Linux powered microcomputer. The resulting photos are beautiful (see more at the source link), and required no help whatsoever from NASA.

This morning, Yahoo brought out a pair of new mobile apps to help broaden its mobile presence and fall in line with its recent redesign campaign. First up on the list is Mail, which currently is no stranger to smartphones but is now available in all its tablet-optimized glory on Android slates and iPads. Also added to the Yahoo portfolio is a Flickr-integrated Weather app for iPhone and iPod touch, which allows you to look at user-submitted pictures of the weather in the city or region you’re checking out. Microsoft sees Windows 8 as a prime delivery vehicle for its online services, so it’s rather important that the company polishes the Bing apps at the heart of its experience. Accordingly, each and every one of them is receiving a tune-up. We’d argue that the biggest upgrade is coming to News: the information app now supports both RSS feeds and offline reading, quite possibly to catch newshounds who need a home once Google Reader goes dark. The refresh also introduces livelier content across the board, including dynamic maps in Weather, real-time US stock updates in Finance, 29 new leagues in Sports and live traffic updates in Maps. Travel users may be equally happy to see new content from Fodor’s, Frommer’s and Lonely Planet. With the exception of the soon-to-come Weather release, all the app updates should be ready and waiting in the Windows Store — get cracking if you live in Microsoft’s online world.
