Liking A Company’s Facebook Page Could Potentially Void Your Right To Sue Them

The next time you plan on “liking” a particular company on Facebook, you might want to think twice because thanks to certain legal wordings, it seems that by doing so, you could be giving up the right to sue the company for any wrongdoing. This does not mean that you cannot have complaints about the company’s products or services, it’s just that if you wanted to sue them because of it, you can’t.

Liking A Companys Facebook Page Could Potentially Void Your Right To Sue ThemIt depends from company to company, but it has recently been noticed that General Mills, the company behind cereals such as Cheerios and Chex, as well as other brands like Bisquick and Better Crocker, have recently updated their privacy. The new policy indicates that if a customer has a dispute with them and who has ever received anything that could be construed as a benefit, like an online discount code/coupon, their right to sue is essentially waived.

Instead customers are expected to submit their complaints via information negotiation via email, or go through arbitration to seek relief. According to General Mills, “Please note we also have new legal terms which require all disputes related to the purchase or use of any General Mills product or service to be resolved through binding arbitration.”

For those unfamiliar with the process of arbitration, it’s because where any disputes one party has with another is resolved through discussions by presenting the side of their story to an arbitrator or a panel of arbitrators, after which the arbitrator will decide on who wins the dispute, kind of like a judge, except that this does not take place in the courts.

This isn’t the first time that companies have employed such tactics, tactics which General Mills believes are reasonably sound. “While it rarely happens, arbitration is an efficient way to resolve disputes — and many companies take a similar approach. We even cover the cost of arbitration in most cases. So this is just a policy update, and we’ve tried to communicate it in a clear and visible way.”

However it does give you something to think about the next time you like a brand/company’s Facebook page, or decided to use one of its online discount codes or coupons towards your next purchase.

Google Develops Algorithm That Can Decipher Its Own CAPTCHAs

Google Develops Algorithm That Can Decipher Its Own CAPTCHAsYou know that funny scramble of words and numbers that some websites use to complete a signup process? They’re typically used to prove that the person signing up for that account is human, as opposed to a bot who might be creating multiple accounts to use for spamming. Well it turns out that Google has managed to develop an algorithm that can solve Google’s own CAPTCHAs with a 99.8% accuracy.

According to Google, this algorithm was designed to be used to help Google analyze hard-to-read signs and house numbers captured by its Street View cameras. By solving this issue, they will be able to more accurately match images with locations on a map, but in the process it seems that this algorithm could also be used to solve CAPTCHAs.

However it seems that Google will not be putting their algorithm to the test in trying to break other CAPTCHAs. Instead the company will use this knowledge that they have gained to further strengthen reCAPTCHA, Google’s own CAPTCHA service. In a post by Vinay Shet, reCAPTCHA’s produce manager, “Thanks to this research, we know that relying on distorted text alone isn’t enough.”

It’s actually ironic that CAPTCHAs, designed to be read by humans, is more accurately read by an algorithm when humans are the ones who probably make more mistakes when it comes to identify the words/numbers!

BitTorrent Sync Now Supports Network Attached Storage Devices

People love network attached storage or NAS devices for a reason. These devices require little or no maintenance yet they offer automated and responsive access to data on a local network while safeguarding users against disk drive failure. The only downside is that NAS devices don’t provide users with the ability to move data to another device outside the network it lives in. As an alternative users can choose to put their data in the cloud but that negates the entire reason of setting up a NAS device. If you face a similar predicament fret not, a solution has been announced today.

Microsoft Updates Office Online With Tell Me, Commenting And More

Relevant commands are displayed in a drop-down list so users can perform actions right away.

In PowerPoint Online the text editor has been re-engineered so that when users are editing slides, the layout looks more like the final result. Performance and video playback optimizations have also been made by speeding up advancement of slides in the editor. PowerPoint online gets the ability to play embedded YouTube videos as well.

Girl Tweets Mock Threat At American Airlines, Gets Arrested

Airlines take security very seriously, even more so after 9/11. They certainly don’t take threats lightly, in fact, they report them to the FBI. That’s what American Airlines did when a 14-year old Dutch Twitter user fired a tweet to AA’s account, claiming she was from Afghanistan, a part of “Al Qaida” and that on “June 1st I’m gonna do something really big.” AA’s account promptly replied that they take these threats very seriously, and that her IP address and details would be forwarded to security and the FBI.
