Google testing search-friendly tabs in stable versions of Chrome and Chrome OS

Google now testing searchfriendly tabs in stable versions of Chrome and Chrome OS

Google has been testing search-enabled tabs in Chrome since December, but you’ve had to run test versions of the browser to see those tabs in action. That changes today: the company is expanding its trials to include a small number of users running stable copies of Chrome and Chrome OS. If you’re part of that exclusive group and use Google as your default search engine, you’ll see a search box appear in every new tab. The page also supports other providers through a developer API. While Google doesn’t say if or when the new search feature will reach every Chrome user, it notes that previous tests have been “encouraging” — don’t be surprised if your tabs get the same treatment in the near future.

Yahoo Handing Out Recycled Usernames, Launches Watchlist

Yahoo Handing Out Recycled Usernames, Launches Watchlist

Back in June Yahoo announced that it is going to reset IDs that have been inactive for at least one full year. This is being done to free up usernames that are no longer being used. This provides an excellent opportunity to those users who have been eyeing a Yahoo username but haven’t been able to possess it because it was already taken up by someone else. Today Yahoo started handing usernames to users who had signed up for the Wishlist and entered their top five choices.

In July Yahoo told everyone to start filling up their wish lists with five top choices according to the order of their preference by August 7th. If a user was first in line for a particular username and had mentioned it in their Wishlist, it would be granted to them. Those who weren’t able to get their requested username this time around are automatically going to be put on the Watchlist, which Yahoo launched today, for free. If you weren’t part of the Wishlist but now want to be on the Watch list, you’ll have to pay $1.99,. Watchlist lets you keep an eye on five usernames for three years. When your required username opens up, Yahoo will hold if for you for 14 days and you’ll be next in line for it.

    Facebook Shared Photo Albums Unveiled

    Facebook Shared Photo Albums Unveiled

Facebook has unveiled shared photo albums. The feature allows multiple users to upload images to one photo album on the social network. The way these albums work is that one user would create an album and will then give access to as many as 50 contributors who can share 200 photos each. Shared photo albums will make it much easier for friends or groups to share pictures from an event or an activity, up till now users could only upload photos to albums that they themselves had created.

The album’s creator will have total access over the privacy of all photos. Three privacy settings can be configured for shared photo albums, public, contributors only and friends of contributors. The album creator will have the power to delete or modify all photos in a particular album, contributors will only be able to edit photos that they themselves have uploaded. The feature is not available for photo albums on Facebook Pages. Starting today, Facebook will roll out this feature to a small group of English users. Shared photo albums will then be integrated for all English users before they are expanded internationally for over one billion of Facebook’s users around the globe. [Image via Mashable]

Feedly Pro Goes Live For Everyone

Feedly Pro Goes Live For Everyone

Feedly gained a lot of traction after the demise of Google Reader earlier this year. It has turned out to be one of the most widely used RSS readers ever since Google started to sunset its iconic service. Feedly recently announced the Pro subscription model which costs $5 per month. It was announced today that Feedly Pro is now live for everyone. Those who are interested can sign up now for either $5 per month or $45 for an entire year. Subscribers will get access to the first batch of Pro features.

Right now the Pro features batch include the ability to search within feeds, integration with Evernote and HTTPS support for an additional layer of security. Subscribers also get premium support which means that their queries will be dealt with on a priority basis. Feedly says that it will continue to add more features for Pro users regularly. The company says that this subscription model will make it more sustainable in the long run and will lead to more “innovation” for both standard and Pro users. They’ve also listened to user feedback and brought HTTPS support along with one-click Pocket integration to Feedly standard. More information about subscription to Pro is available on Feedly’s website.

Facebook News Feed Tweaked To Show More High Quality Content

Facebook News Feed Tweaked To Show More High Quality Content

Facebook announced recently that it has tweaked its News Feed algorithm so that users see more high quality content when they peruse their feeds at any given time of day. The social network says that its goal is to show people the right content from the right people at the right time, so users don’t miss the stories that are important. The latest update helps ensure that the organic content users see from pages they are connected is most interesting to them.

To understand how a post is deemed high quality, Facebook says that it surveyed thousands of people. They asked the users a number of questions, if they thought that content from a page was timely and relevant and if they would ever complain about seeing that content in their News Feed. Facebook explains that it used the results of this survey to build a new machine learning system which detects high quality content. The system judges quality based on thousands of factors. Facebook says that creating an algorithm to do all this is complex, and that the algorithm will continue to be refined as more feedback is received from users. Facebook advises Page owners to continue with their strategies, which should be to create good content and optimize for engagement and reach.

Bing Image Search Quality Nudges Google’s

Searching for Albert of Monaco on Bing

The Bing Search team has published a new blog post in which they present their latest results in Image Search quality. Typically, searching image is extremely different form searching text since the computers have much less data to go on, without going into potentially expensive image analysis. It is clear that a lot of people are searching for images of celebrities, friends or just looking people up. With that in mind, the Bing team has set up to improve its image search and believe that it is noticeably better than Google’s. Here’s why…
