Facebook Rumored To Acquire Waze For $1 BillionIt looks like Facebook could be dropping another $1 billion in a new acquisition, at least that’s what the rumors are claiming as there have been reports that Facebook and Waze are reportedly in advanced talks over a possible acquisition valued between $800 million to $1 billion. Lucasfilm registers pack of new Star Wars domains

Just a couple days ago, Electronic Arts signed a deal with Disney that would see the video game publisher obtain exclusive rights to the Star Wars video game franchise, which pretty much confirms that new Star Wars titles will be incoming at some point. Today, it has been discovered that Lucasfilm has registered a slew of domain names that are possible ideas for future game installments.

deceived-580x435

Of course, the domains could be a mix between possible move titles and video game titles, but they give subtle clues as to what the title will be about. Some of the more notable domain names that were registered include Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Wolf Pack, Star Wars Alliance, and our personal favorite: Wookiee Hunters.

Other domain names include Wolf Pack Adventures, Order 67, Bothan Spies, Gungan Frontier 2, Gungan Frontier 3, and Gungan Frontier 4. Of course, further details on these titles is far from unknown, but it at least tells us that Disney and EA are set to kick it into high gear with new Star Wars installments over these next few years.

Disney acquired Lucasfilm and LucasArts back in October, essentially getting full control over everything Star Wars. However, it came at a cost for the Mickey Mouse company, who paid just north of $4 billion for it all. It looks like that investment will come to good use, though, as Disney looks to milk the franchise for everything its worth.

Google Fiber Expanding To Grandview, MO

Google Fiber Expanding To Grandview, MO

Google Fiber has been slowly, but surely, expanding itself as Google recently announced it expects to release the service in Provo, Utah in late 2013 and Austin, Texas by 2014. A new city is being announced today as Google Fiber will now expand to Grandview, Missouri.

At this time, Google has yet to reveal when exactly Grandview will begin to get Google Fiber, although in their announcement blog post, they did say “it will still be awhile.” Prior to its expansion into Grandview, Google says they need to “plan and engineer our network there first” which for the most part means the expansion is in its confirmation stages and is nowhere near its actual implementation phase. Syria’s Internet Has Now Been Restored After 19+ Hours Of Downtime

Syrias Internet Has Now Been Restored After 19+ Hours Of Downtime

Yesterday, we reported on Syria’s Internet experiencing some serious outages according to Google data as well as other global Internet companies. It looks as though things may be getting back to some kind of normalcy in regards to the country’s Internet as Renesys is reporting access is being re-established.

Rensys’ claim was backed up by several other companies such as Akamai, and BGPmon as well as Google. The reason for the over 19-hour outage is still unclear, although state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) gave a possible explanation through a message posted on their website that reads “Internet services back to normal across Syria after repairing optic cable malfunction. Whether or not that is the actual reason for the outage is yet to be seen, although we’re sure we’ll hear something in the coming days as to the real reason for the outage.

Maxthon Cloud Browser adds local network file transfers for Android and Windows

Maxthon Cloud Browser adds local network file transfers for Android and Windows

While many browsers sync through the cloud, few know how to cope with the local network — what if we just want to push a file to another device nearby? Maxthon doesn’t think we should have to resort to an online service or a dedicated app for the purpose, so it’s rolling a LAN Transfer feature into its Cloud Browser. Starting with Android and Windows versions available today, the web client lets users shuttle files directly to others on the same network, with nothing but the browser in between. Both iOS and Mac users should join the party soon, which could turn Maxthon into a rare (and very unconventional) cross-platform file manager.

Screenshots of redesigned Google Maps surface, show web UI without a sidebar

Screenshots of redesigned Google Maps surface, show web UI without a sidebar

If you can trust a couple of screenshots posted by the unofficial Google Operating System blog this evening, we’ll soon see a new Google Maps experience on the web. As shown above, the sidebar is toast, gone in favor of overlays for the necessary information, a move that more resembles its mobile app, the apps / websites of some of its competitors, and even its own Google Maps Engine view. Also noted as different are elements like the icons and colors, but the most major change could be integration with Google+ to filter search results to locations recommended by your friends. With Google I/O just days away this could be a perfect time for changes to roll out from Mountain View, we hope to know by then if one of our most used websites is getting a fresh coat of paint.

Anonymous Threatens To Wipe U.S “Off The Cybermap”

Anonymous Threatens To Wipe U.S Off The Cybermap

The hacking collective Anonymous was in the news last month for “Operation Free Korea,” in which it hacked North Korea’s Flicker and Twitter account as well as launched an attack on a number of North Korean websites. Their next target isn’t some heavily sanctioned, allegedly rogue nuclear state. It’s actually the United States of America, and Anonymous is threatening to wipe it “off the cyber map.”  (more…)

YouTube Trends Map Displays Most Popular Videos Based On Region, Gender, Age

YouTube Trends Map Displays Most Popular Videos Based On Region, Gender, Age

If you’re a regular YouTube viewer, you’ll know how difficult it is to stumble onto the next big viral video as there are just way too many videos to comb through on a regular basis. That’s why YouTube is taking the initiative to help make it easier for its users to know what is currently trending in their neck of the woods through its new Trends Map.

YouTube’s Trends Map uses regional metrics in order to populate the map of the U.S., which is the first map the service will roll out for now. The Trends Map can be tweaked in order to view what specific genders and age groups are enjoying these days on YouTube, although as of now, it looks like the trailer for the sixth season of HBO’s True Blood is dominating the charts in terms of of the most shares, while the most views is currently going to a video of a water polo player who ends up being a sore loser. The new Trends Map is certainly a fun little tool that we could see using on a regular basis to see what has been deemed to be a viral hit in the U.S.

YouTube Could Be Launching Subscription Service Soon [Rumor]

YouTube Could Be Launching Subscription Service Soon [Rumor]Earlier this year we reported that it was possible that YouTube could be considering launching a paid subscription service. This was apparently revealed in an interview in which a Google spokesperson mentioned that they were looking into subscriptions in which content creators on YouTube could benefit from. While that is an interesting idea, we guess the question is when will such a service be launched? According to a report on the Financial Times, they are claiming that YouTube’s alleged subscription service could be launching as early as this week!

They claim that around 50 YouTube channels are expected to be on board with this new subscription service from the get-go and subscription fees could begin as low as $1.99 a month, which we guess is a pretty reasonable fee. Google has since responded in which they claim they have nothing to announce, but did reiterate that the subscription service is one they are looking into. In any case make what you will of this, but what do you guys think of a subscription-based YouTube?

Twitter Was Right, Attacks Against High Profile Accounts Continue

Twitter Was Right, Attacks Against High Profile Accounts Continue

Recently a number of high profile Twitter accounts have been hacked. These accounts include several CBS ones, including that of 60 Minutes, nearly a dozen of The Guardian as well as the official Associated Press account. Just last week Twitter sent a memo to news organizations telling them that it believed attacks against such accounts will continue. Twitter was definitely right, the most recent victim of this hacking spree is E! Online’s account which was compromised earlier today.

It is being said that the Syrian Electronic Army is against this attack. They themselves have accepted responsibility for their previous attacks. They employ the use of clearly disguised phishing emails which ultimately generate the negative result that they wish for. When such a popular account gets taken, usually some bogus tweets are sent out. E! Online’s account was not spared of this as well. The account was quickly suspended after the breach, but its back online right now and is functioning exactly the way its supposed to do. Folks at Twitter are reportedly clamoring to get their two-factor authentication to roll out, but unless and if that happens, lone passwords can only do so much to fend off attacks.
