The White House Now Has An Official Tumblr Page

The White House, through its official Twitter account, has announced that it now has an official Tumblr Page. It also promises that there will be GIFs, though doesn’t elaborate what kind of GIFs will be uploaded to this page. Perhaps we will get to see President Obama fist bump White House staffers? We’ve also been promised amazing pictures of Bo, who is the first family’s dog, “wonky charts,” some iconic quotes from the President and details of interesting things going on inside the White House that can be publicly shared.

This administration is in no way a stranger to social media. They’ve heavily relied on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ in the past, and still do, to engage with people. The President also did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit late last year. The White House will also be taking submissions via the Tumblr submission tool, advice and questions to engage with readers. It goes without saying that some of us are actually excited about GIFs coming out of the White House, one can only wonder what they’ll show us!

Watch What Happens During A DDoS Attack

Over the past couple of months, we’ve been hearing about an increased number of public DDoS  attacks where The Pirate BayReddit and even iMessage users became victims of these attacks. Considering these attacks against a number of popular websites and services have been popping up, we think its best to educate you to what exactly happens when a DDoS attack occurs, and lucky for us, VideoLAN recorded such an attack.

VideoLAN, who are known to be the creators of VLC, suffered a DDoS attack on April 23, which they took a record of to show exactly what happens when a DDoS attack is initiated. The colored balls are requests that are being sent to the server and the small paddle is a representation of the server trying to keep up with these requests, with balls don’t get hit resulting in a 404 error. Pinterest revives classic features, revamps notifications and search

Pinterest overauls notifications and search, revives a load of classic features

When Pinterest unveiled its big redesign last month, it took the sort of gamble on feature trade-offs that we’ve seen before: some big leaps forward at the expense of a few leaps back. Much to the relief of many, the company is already doing what it can to restore what was lost while still forging ahead. Veteran users can once again see pins they’ve just posted, mention friends and find would-be contacts on Facebook on Twitter. As for the less nostalgic among us? The progress isn’t as dramatic, but it’s there: Pinterest has reworked notifications to show their history, and searches now include as-you-type keyword suggestions. More updates are on the way, including notifications for new pins, so we wouldn’t worry that Pinterest is spending most of its time mending broken fences.

Wavii confirms acquisition by Google, starts to wind down its own service

Wavii confirms acquisition by Google, starts to wind down its own service

There was an odd level of uncertainty surrounding Google’s reported buyout of Wavii: where Google usually mentions acquisitions in short order, mum’s been the word for much of the past week. Thankfully, we won’t be left hanging over the weekend — Wavii has stepped forward to confirm the deal is happening. Neither side has discussed the terms involved, but Wavii chief Adrian Aoun made it clear the acquisition is for the technology first and foremost. Wavii’s info summarization service will be shutting down, while the company’s expertise in natural language processing should find its way into future Google projects. It’s sad to see another independent service absorbed by a much larger company, but we’re at least likely to see the fruits of Wavii’s labor through some very public channels.

Yahoo Japan Launches A Yahoo-branded Thirst Quenching Drink

Yahoo Japan Launches A Yahoo branded Thirst Quenching DrinkYahoo is an internet company probably best known for their search engine services, emails, stock updates, weather updates and more. It is not uncommon for companies to venture outside their core competency, but it looks like Yahoo could be taking a larger detour than expected. It seems that as far as Yahoo Japan is concerned, the company will be launching a drink under the Yahoo Japan branding. We’re not sure how this drink will taste like, but considering that Japan is pretty open when it comes to trying out new flavors and combinations, we expect this Yahoo drink to be welcome with open arms.

The drink will apparently be a thirst quencher, along the lines of Gatorade or Pocari Sweat, just to name a few. The drink will also help Yahoo promote their newly launched web services, such as weather, disasters and a revamped travel section, with the icons of the services being printed on the bottle’s wrapper. There will also be a contest that Yahoo Japan will be running in which customers will stand a chance to win travel packages, digital cameras amongst other prizes. So, anyone interested in a Yahoo thirst quencher?

The Pirate Bay Finds A New Home In Iceland

The Pirate Bay Finds A New Home In Iceland

A couple of weeks back we reported that The Pirate Bay had been kicked out of Greenland after merely two days. Tele-Post, a telecom company which monitors .GK registrations in Greenland, said that it blocked two Pirate Bay domain names because it fears they will be put to illegal use. The world’s number 1 file sharing website has now found a new home in Iceland, and has switched to the .IS domain. The Icelandic registry, ISNIC, has said that they are not responsible for a registrant’s use of their domains and that they will not take any action against the .IS domain names of The Pirate Bay, unless a court order compels them. They say it is the domain’s owners responsibility to adhere to the law, not theirs.

Even if a court order takes away these domains, the website will move everything to another domain, they have already said that they possess a handful of domain names which will be used to access the website even if its primary domains are blocked. So for a while, The Pirate Bay is going to be using the .IS domain.

Google sees record increase in government takedown requests

Google released its seventh transparency report today, which highlights the number of takedown requests that Google receives on a bi-yearly basis. This time around, Google received 2,285 government requests to remove 24,179 pieces of content off of Google’s search engine between July 2012 and December 2012, which is a record high.

That number is up from the 1,811 takedown requests made regarding 18,070 pieces of content during the previous half of 2012, and it’s the highest number of takedown requests that Google has seen during a six-month period since the search giant began to offer transparency reports three years ago.

Google’s legal director, Susan Infantino, says that “it’s become increasingly clear that the scope of government attempts to censor content on Google services has grown,” and she notes that “in more places than ever, we’ve been asked by governments to remove political content that people post on” various Google services.

The most notable spike came from Brazil, which saw a sharp increase from the last transparency report. Google received 697 requests in Brazil, most of which were court orders. This is up from 191 during the first half of 2012. Google says that the reason for the steep increase was due to the municipal elections, which took place during the fall.

Google Drive Receives New Social Features

Google Drive Receives New Social Features

Google announced today that it is releasing a string of new social features for Google Drive which will make it even easier to work together in Drive. These features consist of one-click group chat and new profile pictures. Instead of just displaying names of other viewers, whenever a user now opens a file in Drive they’ll see profile pictures, which will make it easier to know who else is viewing the file in just a single glance.

More details about each viewer can be obtained by just hovering over the profile picture, they can also be added to Google+ from within Drive itself. Users who don’t have profile photos can select from a number of animal drawings, which includes an alligator and a monkey. Group chats can now be started in Google Drive in just a single click. At the top right there is a new chat button, clicking on it will open up a chat box from where everyone in the file can be messaged. Google says that these new features will be rolled out over the next couple of days.
