Turkey’s Twitter Ban Sees Spike In VPN Downloads

Turkeys Twitter Ban Sees Spike In VPN DownloadsA couple of days ago, the Turkish government decided to ban its citizens and those living within its borders from using Twitter. Unfortunately this had to be one of the worst bans put into effect because not only did Twitter themselves offer up a solution to Turkish residents, but it seems that the ban did anything but lessen the amount of tweets sent.

In fact according to the numbers, the ban actually saw an increase of tweets from Turkey rise by 138%. At the same time the ban also led to the rush of people downloading VPNs, such as Hotspot Shield which saw a total of 270,000 downloads from Turkish users within 12 hours. (more…)

Twitter Experiments With View Counts To Drive Engagement

We often hear about Twitter experimenting with new features, though not all of them necessarily make the cut. Turkey Lays Down The Banhammer On Twitter

Turkey Lays Down The Banhammer On TwitterThere are places in the world where social media is not allowed. Countries like China have banned “foreign” social media from the country, instead opting to create localized alternatives which have turned out to be just as popular amongst its citizens.

However in Turkey, no local alternative is offered. Instead a recent statement by the country’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan revealed his plans to eradicate Twitter from the country. Speaking in a rally in Bursa, Erdoğan was quoted as saying, “We will eradicate Twitter. I don’t care what the international community says. Everyone will witness the power of the Turkish Republic.” (more…)

Former Firefox Developer Explains Mozilla’s Decision To Drop Its Modern UI Project

Former Firefox Developer Explains Mozillas Decision To Drop Its Modern UI ProjectWe know that Mozilla has been hard at work creating a version of Firefox that would run on Windows 8’s Metro UI. Unfortunately a day right before the app was supposed to be released, Mozilla announced that they would be killing off the project, claiming that because not many people ran Windows 8 in the Metro environment that it didn’t make sense for them to release it.

It was a valid reason but according to former Mozilla Firefox developer, Brian R. Bondy, he dives into a more detailed explanation as to why Mozilla killed off Firefox for the Metro UI, and that he believes Mozilla ultimately made the right decision in killing off the project. (more…)

Twitter Encrypted Direct Messages Not Coming Anytime Soon

Twitter Encrypted Direct Messages Not Coming Anytime Soon

Back in November last year word leaked that Twitter was working on making direct messages more secure. It was said back then that the microblogging network is going to encrypt all direct messages sent by its users. According to a latest report by The Verge, Twitter encrypted direct messages might not be coming anytime soon. Presumably the company has shelved this project for unknown reasons, so it isn’t entirely clear if and when this might be implemented across the board.
