Popcorn Time Gets Resurrected Under A Different Torrent Group

Popcorn Time Gets Resurrected Under A Different Torrent GroupJust last week we reported on a streaming service called Popcorn Time. It was basically a pirate’s equivalent of Netflix where users would be able to stream torrents instead of downloading the files onto their computers.

According to its creators, they claim that Popcorn Time is 100% legal, although we’re not sure how. Perhaps it could be due to a loophole in the law, but whatever it is, its creators asserted its legality, although the act of piracy itself is not. That being said, they decided to shut down its service anyway, but not before the code for the program made its way onto GitHub where it has since been forked several times. (more…)

Mozilla Kills “Firefox For Metro” Project Citing Low Adoption

Mozilla Kills Firefox For Metro Project Citing Low AdoptionOne of the unique aspects of Windows 8 is that it has been optimized for both tablets and regular computers. What this means is that OEMs can choose to build in a touchscreen display into their desktop PCs or laptops to allow users to interact with the Metro UI which, for the most part, has been designed for touch input.

However what this means is that developers will have to create an optimized version of their app for this touch interface since it obviously functions and looks very different from the regular desktop. We’ve seen developers like VLC do it, and at one point Mozilla attempted to do it as well with “Firefox for Metro”, but in the case of the latter, it looks like the project has since been canned. Google Does Away With Banner Ad Experiment

Google Does Away With Banner Ad ExperimentIt is safe to say that banner ads can be pretty intrusive, but unfortunately that is just one of the ways websites survive, through these banner ads. As you can see in the image above, a Google search for “southwest airlines” will result in a giant Southwest Airlines banner splashed across the top of the page. Naturally this is great for advertisers who want to ensure they get the top view and pushing other results further down the page, but thankfully that experiment has come to an end. (more…)

The cloud storage niche is becoming increasingly competitive and all players are doing whatever they can to stay ahead of their rivals. Happy 25th Birthday to the Embattled World Wide Web
