Obamacare Website Down For A While Before Enrollment Deadline

Obamacare Website Down For A While Before Enrollment DeadlineIf one is of the superstitious kind, then the omens do not look too good for Obamacare, as the website for folks to enroll in U.S. private health insurance did run into some delays early this Monday morning. In fact, it happened a mere hours prior to the deadline for the initial wave of enrollment where the healthcare law is concerned.

Spritz: Read One Word at a Time, And You’ll End up Reading Faster

Who knew reading one word at a time could help you read at a faster rate? That’s what you’ll be able to do with the Spritz app. On average, a person reads 220 words a minute. With Spritz, you can double that number or at least increase it by a considerable amount.

The app essentially flashes one word at a time on the screen, just long enough for you to process and read it before moving on to the next word. The app’s developer even claims that it can help some folks read up to a thousand words in sixty seconds! You can find more information on Spritz on their website, and you can even try to practice reading text at up to 600wpm.

However, for obvious reasons, you won’t be able to do this with paperback books (imagine how wasteful it’s going to be if publishers printed a mere word on each page).

This Website Lets You Turn Yourself Into a GIF in Seconds

We know what you’re thinking. If there’s anything the internet suffers from (narcissism, insecurity, obscenity, an uncomfortable affinity for cats), it’s certainly not a dearth of websites dedicated to GIFs. But surprisingly, of all the websites out there created for the sole purpose of flooding the internet with more GIFs, there’s none quite like "And Then I Was Like…" Here, there’s no fancy backgrounds, dated pop culture references, or complicated steps—it’s all about you.

Want a Part Time Love? There’s a Dating Site For That

Unlike Stevie Wonder’s hit song Part Time Lover which was about, well, part-time lovers, this dating site called Part Time Love is all about helping people find their match, minus the pressure. It offers an unusual service that stays true to the name of the site: matchmaking for people who are looking for relationships without the usual strings attached.

part time love website 1 620x373magnify

Most people date to find a partner, but not with the strict timeline of getting hitched after X number of days like some people expect. So for that, there’s Part Time Love. The description on the site reads:

We are not a no-strings website. We are for singles looking for regular partners with mutual attraction, genuine friendship, respect and a magical spark but whom have no expectations of moving in after three months and value their free time and independence.

That’s definitely unconventional by most standards. But if you’re in a situation where you’re looking for a mate but have so many other things going on in your life at the same time, then this might be a worthy alternative to consider. Check out Part Time Love here.

Set up Instant Video Chats and Conferences with Appear.in

Distance learning isn’t as easy as it seems. It seems like I discovered Appear.in a tad too late because I’m just a few semesters away from graduating with my Master’s degree, but you might find this service useful.

    appear in 1 620x330magnify

Appear.in basically lets you have a video conference, chat, whatever you want to call it, with up to eight people online. All you have to do is log on their site, create a room, share the link with others, and go.

    appear in 2 620x386magnify

There’s no need to register for any accounts, log in, or install any software. This makes it perfect for project discussions and group sessions where not all members have Skype, WebEx or other similar messenger-type programs installed on their devices. The only requirement is that users have a webcam or microphone and the latest version of Chrome, Firefox or Opera.

You can find more info and try Appear.in here.

Soon-to-be-Dad Wants the Internet to Name His Daughter

Would you name your daughter Cthulhu All-Spark? I wouldn’t. But Stephen McLaughlin might, because that’s the name the Internet has suggested and voted to the top for his soon-to-be-born daughter.

    name my daughter 620x723magnify

Perhaps the pressure to finding a good name on his own was too much. Maybe he just wanted to have a little fun and do something different in the naming process. It doesn’t matter what his reason is though, because his plight for a name has been heeded by legions of Internet users and trolls who are all too happy to suggest some decent (but mostly outrageous) names.

Got a few suggestions of your own? Head on over to NameMyDaughter.com and send them in! Maybe we can band together and prevent his unborn daughter from being saddled with such a name. Though it’s better than Megatron Doge McLaughlin or Streetlamp Moonshine McLaughlin, I suppose.

SickWeather Maps out Where the Sick People Are (So You Can Avoid Them)

There are a lot of apps that make use of information that people have posted on their public social network profiles. For example, there’s Hell is Other People, which is an app that helps anti-social people avoid other people by utilizing other users’ check-in data.

Then there’s SickWeather, which maps out where all the sick people are so healthy people can stay healthy by avoiding areas where these sick people are.

    sickweather 1zoom in

SickWeather uses an advanced algorithm to check status updates and posts on Facebook and Twitter for any mention of an illness. The app will take note of the sick user’s location and indicate where they are on a map. It’s like a weather map of where the sick people are located instead of, well, the actual weather. It can even show the movement of outbreaks over time.

Areas where sick people can be found are designated as sick zones. Users can also choose to search the map by illness, ie. the flu, chicken pox, or the common cold. There’s no mention of zombie outbreaks on the list though. You can also set the app to alert you automatically to specific ailments.
