No More Headstands: Hiccup Stick Rids You of Those Pesky Things

When we were kids, my sisters and I used to think that we were literally growing whenever we got hiccups. That was partly the reason why we never did anything to get rid of them, since we wanted to be tall and all.

We eventually realized that that wasn’t true, so we began doing things most people did to get rid of hiccups, like drinking water, holding our breaths, and swallowing spoonfuls of sugar. Those methods were usually a hit or miss – but mostly they missed.

Hiccup StickBut there’s a company called Hicural that claims to have developed a surefire way to get rid of hiccups. It’s called the Hiccup Stick, and it’s basically a stick with a cavity in the middle that you’re supposed to bite while drinking a glass of water.

Apparently, doing so will tense up the muscles in your throat. This stops the spasms in your diaphragm which causes the hiccups, eliminating the hiccups right at the source.

Hiccup Sticks are available for $7.99(USD) each.

Ball-shaped Camera & Sensor: Real Life Battle Scanner

If you’ve ever played XCOM: Enemy Unknown, you’ll be familiar with the Battle Scanner, a gadget used by the game’s sniper class. The Battle Scanner provides visibility to an area covered by fog-of-war. A new company is currently working on a real world equivalent of that device. And not just because the Sniper won’t share his toy with the rest of us.

bounce imaging ball and sensor camera

The yet unnamed device is being developed by Bounce Imaging. The device will have six cameras that can take two pictures per second, which will then be stitched together to provide a 360º degree of its surroundings. It will also have infrared LEDs to help it take pictures in low light. The ball will send the 360º view to a mobile device so the user can scout and plan in safety. Aside from the cameras, the ball could also contain various sensors, such as ones that analyze temperature, chemicals or radiation.

As with the Battle Scanner, this concept device will be extremely useful in combat situations. But Francisco Aguilar, the founder of Bounce Imaging, was actually compelled to start his company after the earthquake in Haiti back in 2010, where his concept device could have helped find survivors. Aguilar says the device will be tested by SWAT teams and Massachusetts police in January 2013 and could have a retail price as low as just $500 (USD).

William Shatner Launches iPhone App Called Shatoetry: Oh, Shat!

I think it’s safe to say everyone knows William Shatner, whether it’s from Star Trek, T.J. Hooker,  various TV commercials, or Psych. Shat is particularly well known for his “larger than life” acting style and being a generally over-the-top guy. Shatner is also apparently really into spoken-word poetry and has a new app called Shatoetry.

shatoetry

The app has a bunch of different words recorded in Shatner’s distinctive voice that you can piece together to make your own poetry or Shatisms. Think Magnetic Poetry, but with Captain Kirk. The app supports multiple users allowing two users to work together to create their own ridiculous spoken word poems too. Once you create your own Shatoetry, you can share with friends.

The app promises updates with special word packs for holidays and other special occasions. The app is available right now for iOS  for $2.99(USD) on the App Store. If you’re willing to throw away your three bucks to try this app out, be sure and let us know if it’s a piece of Shat.

Man Divorces Wife for Being Ugly, Judge Awards Him with Damages – Wait, What?

This is as bizarre as news can get. A man boy recently filed for divorce from his now ex-wife because he claimed she was ugly. I call him a ‘boy’ because really I don’t think any real man would do what he did. What ever happened to ’til death do us part’?

Apparently, everything began when Jian Feng’s daughter was born. In his own words, he described the baby as ‘incredibly ugly.’ He then proceeded to accuse his wife of cheating because the baby didn’t resemble either one of them.

Ugly WifeIt was at this time that his wife admitted to spending over a hundred grand on plastic surgery. She never told him about it though. This resulted with Mr. Feng filing for divorce since his wife ‘deceived him’ and convinced him to marry her ‘under false pretenses.’ What kind of love was it if it was only skin-deep anyway?

The judge agreed with him though and awarded him the damages. With all the advancements people are making with cosmetic surgery, these are pretty sad developments on both fronts: for the woman, who went to such lengths to look ‘pretty’ by social standards; and to Fend, who probably only wanted to marry her pretty face and nothing more.

Bioprinting Uses 3D Printers to Make Living Tissue: Frankenstein 2.0

We’ve seen a lot of notable applications of 3D printing technology, but this one has to be the most cutting edge of them all. Some companies have made considerable progress in special 3D printers and ink. Instead of printing replicasfood or gadgets, they print living tissue.

bioprinting organovo

The screenshot above is from a presentation made by Andras Forgacs at a conference held by The Economist. Forgacs is the co-founder of Organovo, one of the companies who are looking into 3D printing live tissue, which is now being called bioprinting. Forgacs implies that Organovo is interested in using bioprinting to help pharmaceutical companies reduce costs in developing drugs. Listen to Forgacs explain bioprinting in a nutshell in the video below, courtesy of Fora.tv:

As noted by the Wall Street Journal, researchers and “bioengineers” in various academic institutions have also been experimenting with bioprinting. Some have been able to print blood vessels, while others are making a portable printer designed to print tissue directly to a wound to make it heal faster.

All of these experts hope that someday they will get to the next level and print entire organs. Perhaps by then we can “map” the organs of other people, then copy and print those templates. Want to be smarter? Download a template of Stephen Hawking’s brain, print it then have it transplanted on your noggin. Want to be stronger? Download and print Lebron James’ physique. Want to be braver? Download and print the heart of a champ. Or not.

Natural Keyboard Grown from a Laser Cutter

We’ve seen wooden computer peripherals before, but designer and programmer Robbie Tilton took it a step further. Turned off by the synthetic, “visually bland and tactilely inept” design of some gadgets, Tilton made a keyboard that looks like it sprung out from the ground.

Tilton based his project on Apple’s wireless keyboard. He probably chose it in keeping with his nature theme amirite? He used a laser cutter to make the wooden frame and then bent the wood to assume the shape of the original keyboard. I’m not sure if the keys are all wood or if the Apple keys are sandwiched in between thin pieces of wood. Ironically, Tilton wasn’t able to find real moss, so he had to settle for imitation moss to cover the keyboard.

The irony of the moss aside, I think the keyboard looks good. I think a mouse with a soft grassy surface would be nice as well. I don’t want it to be made from a “natural” mouse though.

Baby’s First Baby Doll is Horrifically Twisted, But Sends a Strong Message

A pregnant baby doll that has its own pregnant baby? This ‘toy’ would probably become every mothers’ worst nightmare, if it actually existed. Aside from that, the whole concept is just plain wrong and twisted.

Fortunately, it’s not really a toy.

Babys First BabyRather, the ‘Baby’s First Baby’ doll is actually an art piece by Darren Cullen. With this project, he wanted to make a statement on teen pregnancies, consumerism, and how each gender is prepared for adulthood, by way of the toys that are being made for them.

Babys First Baby1

Stretch marks? Water that really breaks? Darren really didn’t hold anything back. Maybe that’s why a lot of people were outraged when they thought that this was actually a real doll. Then again, creating an actual listing for the doll on Etsy probably made a lot of people think that it was actually for sale.

The doll is going to be displayed at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland, UK from October 26 to January 12, 2013 as part of a group show called Moral Holiday.

Spraytect Incorporates a Pepper Spray in Your Phone Case

Phone cases are becoming quirkier and quirkier. This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen a pepper spray incorporated into the case (remember this one?). However, I think this different and newer variant called the Spraytect works and looks better.

spraytect pepper spray case
Instead of a bulky and extended case to hold the pepper spray, it’s incorporated instead in the middle of the case so the design doesn’t depart much from that of your typical phone case.

And in case you’re worried about accidental firings, fret not because there are multiple safety mechanisms to make sure that that doesn’t happen – because there’s nothing worse than a face full of pepper spray when you’re trying to snap a picture.

The Spraytect case is available online for $39.95(USD).

Kyosho Space Ball R/C Chopper: Spaceballs: The Helicopter

Children are masters at breaking toys. They also have a doctorate in getting themselves hurt. Kyosho’s remote-controlled helicopter mitigates both tendencies with one feature. The entire thing is inside a spherical plastic cage that protects both itself and the people it will inevitably hit. Better a slight bruise than a nasty cut.

If the company’s name didn’t clue you in as to where this toy is from, its bonus feature will. It has an atomizer, so you can put perfume in it and spread the fragrance around. Because that’s what every toy helicopter has been missing all along.

You can order the Space Ball on Kyosho’s online shop [JP] for ¥6,279 (~$79 USD). Perfume not included.

Couple Gets Married in Klingon Wedding Ceremony, Everyone Lives

Nerds will do some pretty strange things for their love of Star Trek. Nerds like newlyweds Jossie Sockertopp and Sonnie Gustavsson. They have the honor of being Britain’s first known couple to get married in a Klingon wedding and were married at a Star Trek convention over the weekend.
klingon wedding
Despite the Klingon tradition of violence and bloodshed, no one was killed during the ceremony  – though we’re not sure about the reception. They met four years ago at the retirement home where they both work, and after watching the episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where Worf marries Jadzia Dax in a traditional Klingon ceremony, they decided to do the same.

I hope they will be happy for many years, because the Klingon divorce ceremony far less pleasant.
