WhatsApp Now Has Half A Billion Active Users

WhatsApp Now Has Half A Billion Active Users

Its safe to say that WhatsApp is the most popular cross platform messaging service in the world. It has numbers to back up this statement. Just today the company announced that it has reached the significant milestone of having half a billion active users around the world. Collectively users are sharing 700 million photos and 100 million videos every single day through WhatsApp. Some of its fastest growing markets over the last few months have been Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia.

WhatsApp was recently in the news a lot for a totally different reason. Facebook decided to acquire it for a whopping $19 billion. Some believed that Facebook grossly overpaid for WhatsApp, however CEO Mark Zuckerberg is of the view that the service is worth more than the $19 billion he proverbially paid. The deal has already received the green light from FTC, approval from international regulatory bodies is pending.

It has taken WhatsApp roughly a month and a half to add 50 million new active users. The last update on user stats it posted was in February when WhatsApp had 450 million active users. WhatsApp is very well on its way of reaching one billion users. It has witness rapid growth in the past year alone and its certainly not going anywhere anytime soon.

This is a feature that Microsoft will be supporting with Windows Phone 8.1 but unfortunately not all apps will want to take advantage of it. (more…)

FTC Clears Facebook/WhatsApp Deal, Must Honor Privacy Obligations

Back in February it was announced that Facebook had agreed to buy WhatsApp for $19 billion. Privacy advocates raised their voice against the deal and even called upon the FTC to look into the deal. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission today signed off on the sale, clearing the way for Facebook to absorb the most widely used cross platform messaging service in the world. Though the FTC warned both companies that they must continue to honor their privacy obligations.

German Carrier Launches WhatsApp Specific SIM Card Deal

German Carrier Launches WhatsApp Specific SIM Card DealWhatsApp is proving itself to be an extremely popular instant messenger app. Recent stats revealed that the company processes about 64 billion messages a day which is a lot of messages being sent and received by its users. It could also explain why Facebook might be interested in the company and were willing to pay an eye-watering $19 billion for it.

Now it seems that WhatsApp’s popularity and its ubiquity have resulted in a German carrier creating a special prepaid SIM card that will give users unlimited access to WhatsApp on top of data limits. What this means is that you will be able to send and receive WhatsApp messages without it eating into your regular data which would make it great for power users and for tourists traveling to Germany but would like to keep in touch with friends and family with the app. (more…)
