NYC Rolls Out Largest Free Public Wi-Fi Network

NYC Rolls Out Largest Free Public Wi Fi NetworkNew York City, also fondly known as the Big Apple, has taken yet another step in the right direction for technophiles – the city’s Internet access will be enhanced with the introduction of the largest Wi-Fi network in the country, blanketing all 95 blocks of Harlem in the process. This humongous undertaking is known as the Harlem Wi-Fi Network, and by the time it arrives at its completion, it would hold the stature of being the largest outdoor Wi-Fi network in the US. The approximate number of people being served? We are looking at around 80,000 Harlem residents, at least that is what New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg mentioned in a press conference.

Best of all is, this Wi-Fi network will be free of charge to use, where it delivers speeds of at least 2Mbps. As for the area of coverage, expect it to begin from 110th to 138th streets, between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and Madison Avenue. Harlem residents can look forward to the first phase of the network’s rollout to be completed before the calendar rolls over to 2014, with the final phased touted to be completed before the second half of next year. Does this particular bit of news make you want to move over to NYC?

Halloween Pumpkin Defines 21st Century Horror

Most Halloween pumpkin carvings nowadays don’t even try to spook people anymore, instead presenting geeky or pop culture references. Then again, it’s not like the default jack-o’-lantern’s face is scary anyway.

Comedienne Megan MacKay knows how to spook today’s trick or treaters:

London Gives “Smart Bins” the Old Heave Ho

A year ago, pod-shaped recycling bins were installed all over the UK by Renew London. The so-called “smart bins” definitely look better than your average trash can. Now, you might be wondering, why would trash cans have Wi-Fi capabilities and an LCD installed on front?

The answer, my friends, is advertising. Targeted advertising.

    Smart Bins

The bin looks for smartphones nearby that have their Wi-Fi turned on. It then logs their MAC address and calculates the “proximity, speed, duration and manufacturer” of each device. It tracks the phone owner’s actions to then display targeted adverts on the screen, which will play as they walk past the bin.

Sounds smart, right? Yeah, definitely, but it’s rubbing a lot of people the wrong way because of privacy issues. To be honest, I’d be pretty irked, too, if this phone was tracking what I was doing just so it could show me an ad or two when I walk past the bin.

    Smart Bin

So it was only a matter of time before the bins had their Wi-Fi and tracking capabilities pulled. The City of London has called on Renew to stop recording people’s movements, so Londoners can breathe a sigh of relief now.

The City of London released the following statement:

We have already asked the firm concerned to stop this data collection immediately. We have also taken the issue to the Information Commissioner’s Office. Irrespective of what’s technically possible, anything that happens like this on the streets needs to be done carefully, with the backing of an informed public.

Microsoft Gives Away Free Wi-Fi Routers Tucked Inside Forbes Magazines

As more publishers make the move to digital publishing, it seems like print publications are dying a slow death. Some magazines have resorted to including a small freebie with every issue, from free posters and coupons to pens and now even Wi-Fi routers. The last one only applies to select issues of Forbes which were sent to various technology and business professionals.

    microsoft forbes wi fi router

Each of these issues had a special four-page insert that provided the reader with 15 days of free wireless Internet care of T-Mobile. The insert was part of a promotion for Microsoft’s Office 365.

The compact router inside has to be charged up first before usage. After that, users can expect to get up to three hours of access from each charge. Wi-Fi is meant to be shared, so they made sure that the mobile hotspot can provide Internet access for up to five different devices.

This is one of the cooler tech gifts I’ve seen being given away in a magazine, so you might want to grab a copy of the May 6, 2013 issues of Forbes before the Wi-Fi-packed ones run out.

Skydog Smart Router Puts You in Control of Your Network

There are free firmware for routers that extend the functionality of certain models – DD-WRT, Tomato and Hyper-WRT come to mind – but if you want a user-friendly interface, the Skydog system might be better for you. Made by PowerCloud Systems, it lets you monitor and manage home networks using a convenient mobile app.

    skydog smart home router

The Skydog router looks like a typical router. It has four Ethernet ports and offers dual band wireless N at up to 300mbps per band. But where it really shines is in its mobile app. The app is based on HTML5, so it will work with practically all mobile devices and desktop computers. It lets you see and label connected devices and restrict or put a time limit to their access, down to specific websites. This is great for parents who want to control their kids’ internet access without having to look over their shoulders all the time.

It also lets you save and switch templates so you can give more bandwidth to certain devices, like when someone wants to play online games or stream high definition videos. Best of all, you can manage a network wherever you are as long as you have an Internet connection. You can even manage multiple Skydog routers. That’s a godsend for people who are designated IT guys in their families.

Pledge at least $99 (USD) on Kickstarter to qualify for an early unit of the Skydog. Better start a fundraiser among your friends and family.

Your Off The Shelf Wi-Fi Router Can Easily Be Hacked

Your Off The Shelf Wi Fi Router Can Easily Be Hacked

Most internet users don’t put much thought in to buying a Wi-Fi router, they go in the store and usually pick up of the most popular ones. It turns out that most of the best selling ones are actually not that secure. According to a new report, a startling majority of off the shelf Wi-Fi routers can easily be hacked by someone who knows what they’re doing. Independent Security Evaluators, a research firm based in Baltimore, made this revelation in a new report. They say that thirteen of the most popular off the shelf routers can easily be exploited by a “moderately skilled adversary with LAN or WLAN access.”

The company’s research also found that there were critical security vulnerabilities in nearly all devices which could be exploited by a remote adversary, which means that they could compromise your router or have unauthorized control over it. They’ve also detailed a fix, but its not for the average Joe but for router manufacturers. Mitigation of these threats requires a level of sophistication and skill that is beyond most average users, those who are more likely to become victims. The only way average users can be safe is if router manufacturers started making more secure products.

Kit Kat Invites You to Have a Break – Minus the Wi-Fi

You see free Wi-Fi stations all over the place these days, but when was the last time you saw a free ‘No Wi-Fi’ zone? Probably never, if you haven’t been down to Amsterdam lately. Instead of offering free Wi-Fi for bystanders and on-the-go passersby, Kit Kat’s station blocks all sorts of wireless signals instead.

Kit Kat No Wifi ZoneIf you’re the type who spends every waking moment on Facebook or Twitter, then you should make your way to this no Wi-Fi zone once in a while and take a break from all that madness of the online world. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to stay connected, but if you stop living in the real world and begin to ‘live’ more online, then you’ve got a problem.

Kit Kat’s ‘No Wi-Fi’ campaign was thought up by advertising agency JWT Amsterdam and was designed by Kyoko Takeshita.
