Hasta La Gadget!

Back in July, word got out that Huawei was prepping a revised version of its entry-level Android tablet, dubbed the MediaPad 7 Lite. As that name implies, this Android ICS tab’s of the 7-inch variety and, thus, lends itself well to one-handed use for busy on-the-go types. Considering this isn’t part of the outfit’s top shelf portfolio, its mix of specs have been kept quite modest: there’s a single-core 1.2GHz Cortex A8 CPU underneath that 1,024 x 600 IPS display. But before you knock it for falling short of even 720p territory, bear in mind this device’s being marked at a 229 Euro price point — so it’s affordable and geared squarely for the budget segment.

Loaded up with a mostly stock version of Android 4.0.3 and global radios for 3G / WiFi, this humble tab’s made for mobile use, as the OEM’s VP of Euro operations assured us repeatedly. Performance-wise, its lack of a dual-core setup is heavily apparent, since there was a considerable lag between our touch input and onscreen effect. The tab also sports 8GB of internal storage, a rear 3.2-megapixel camera and VGA front facer — helpful if you’re out and about and want to video chat — in addition to a 4,100mAh battery.

As for the MediaPad 7 Lite’s build, well, it’s a bit disappointing especially given the attractive design of the Nexus 7 which is comparably priced and higher specced. In all, it feels rather chunky in-hand, but it does feature a metallic back bordered by solid white plastic. It’s set to be released this August in South Africa, China, Russia, Philippines and Taiwan, followed by Germany in October for 249 Euros. In addition to producing a slew of new headphones, Logitech’s latest collaboration with Ultimate Ears has produced a pair of Bluetooth speakers and a Smart Radio. The UE Smart Radio comes equipped with 802.11b/g WiFi on board to pull audio from directly from the likes of Spotify and Pandora or from local sources like Mac, PC, iOS or Android devices. A 2.4-inch LCD is on the front, along with the usual audio controls, plus there are six preset buttons that can be programmed to easily access playlists from myriad locales. It’s also got a rechargeable battery, good for a claimed six hours of playback, and will set you back $180 when it goes on sale next month.

Logitech’s UE Mobile Boombox replaces the firm’s Mini Boombox, but keeps its $100 price. It comes in five colors (red, yellow, blue, white and black) and can both stream your tunes via Bluetooth and serve as a speakerphone using its omni-directional mic. You can pair up to eight devices with the Mobile Boombox, and its rechargeable battery promises up to ten hours of listening pleasure. In our brief ears-on, we found it offered clear sound, though unsurprisingly, it struggled to pump out much bass. That said, we really liked its solid rubber construction, and can see it holding up well to abuse. Its big brother, the $250 UE Boombox, has much better low-end response and a fuller sound generally thanks to its eight drivers. Like the Mini, it also can pair with eight devices and has a rechargeable battery, though it promises only six hours of audio. We really dig its cast aluminum chassis and clean lines, and the handle on top begs to be used in old-school fashion — with the Boombox propped up on your shoulder bumping some choice hip-hop. Both of these Bluetooth speakers start shipping this month, and our friends in grand Europa get them in September.

During a visit to Samsung’s headquarters in Korea earlier this year, we had a chance to talk shop with company execs. The electronics maker’s existing mirrorless and point-and-shoot lineups were the primary topic of discussion, but we did catch wind of a Galaxy product possibly to come, from the camera division. A Galaxy camera? That could only mean Android, and a heavy heaping of touch and connectivity. At the time, reps admitted only that they were “considering” such a device, and declined to provide any hint as to design or functionality. And we haven’t heard a further peep, until today. As you may have gathered from recent rumors, Samsung’s Galaxy Note II is not the only product to be Unpacked this afternoon. Sure enough, the anticipated Galaxy Camera is also on order, and we have all the juicy details just past the break.

Netgear is on hand at IFA in Berlin this week, and the company has unveiled several new and interesting products. I already mentioned the new Powerline Music Extender that allows you to share audio and USB devices around the home via your power lines. Netgear also unveiled a new N750 wireless dual band and a new N900 video and gaming four-port Wi-Fi adapter.

The N750 offers 750 Mbps speeds for streaming HD video around the home and to support multiple player gaming. The fast data transfer speeds also make it much easier and quicker to transfer large files around the home network. The router also supports Netgear ReadyShare Cloud allowing you to access files at home via smartphones, tablets, or your PC wherever you may be.

The feature also allows users to drag-and-drop files and folders without using file sharing sites or having to upload files. The router is compatible with Apple Time Machine for automatic wireless backups to connected USB hard drives for Mac users. The other new device is the N900 video and gaming four-port Wi-Fi adapter.

This adapter can connect as many as four devices such as smart TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, and other devices to a wireless network at 450 Mbps speeds. When utilizing the adapter on a network that features a router supporting dual bands, the N900 will also support 5 GHz performance. The device allows users to wirelessly stream multiple 1080p HD videos in the home at the same time. The adapter is also optimized for buffer and glitch free HD streaming from online sites such as Netflix.
