Wii U Developer Explains Some Of The Console’s Shortcomings

Wii U Developer Explains Some Of The Consoles ShortcomingsWhile the original Nintendo Wii proved to be a success for the company, its successor, the Wii U, has proven to be anything but. Retailers have called the console’s sales disappointing, and despite having a head start on the PS4 and Xbox One, both consoles have managed to overtake the Wii U’s lifetime sales in a short period of time. Now there are a couple of reasons why the console has failed to make an impact. Firstly it is that there aren’t that many big title games available for it at the moment, and secondly developers aren’t too interested in developing for the console either, which is actually a vicious cycle of sorts, although thanks to an anonymous developer for the Wii U, they have revealed some of the reasons why developers might be holding back on creating games for the console. Wii U GamePad Hacked to Stream from PC: Nintendo Shield

At the 2013 Chaos Communication Congress, a group of hackers called Mema Haxx showed off a neat trick: streaming and controlling applications from a PC to a Wii U GamePad. They even played a bit of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker from a Gamecube emulator. Hacker humor folks.

Wii U GamePad PC stream hack by Mema Haxx 620x348magnify

I’m not even going to pretend that I understand what Mema Haxx did to pull this off, especially since you can watch the presentation in its entirety in the video below. Lesser mortals such as I should proceed to around 47:30 in the video to check out the demo.

You can also read Mema Haxx’ presentation on Google Docs. Although the group thinks that the hack is very promising, it’s still in alpha and won’t be of any use to anyone except coders. For now you’d be better off commissioning a Cross Plane. But keep that Wii U GamePad healthy.

Wii U GamePad Reverse Engineered To Stream PC Games

Wii U GamePad Reverse Engineered To Stream PC GamesOne of the nifty features of the Nintendo Wii U system is its GamePad. This allows gamers to stream games from their Wii U onto the GamePad to keep playing if the main television is in use, basically transforming the living room console into something of a handheld one. However it seems that two hackers have managed to reverse engineer the Wii U’s GamePad controller and have managed to get it to stream PC games to the controller, bypassing the Wii U’s console entirely. The hackers demonstrated a Gamecube emulated version of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, as well as a drawing app, both of which were streamed directly from the PC and onto the GamePad.

The duo presented their findings during a lecture, in which the lecture’s description read, “When the Wii U was released, a few console hackers and I were talking about potential uses for the Wii U GamePad. However, before being able to use a Wii U GamePad as a remote controller for a robot or a quadricopter, the first step was to understand how it worked and how to communicate with it.” Unfortunately the video demonstration of the hacked GamePad in action has since been removed, but if you’re interested in checking out the findings of the hackers, you can check out the lecture slides which has since been posted online. Pretty cool, huh? Imagine the possibilities that this can open up!

Notch Confirms Minecraft For Wii U Not In The Works

Notch Confirms Minecraft For Wii U Not In The WorksThe other day we reported on a rumor that Minecraft would be making its way onto Nintendo’s Wii U platform in the near future. This sort of made sense because not only would this spread the game’s popularity, but also because of the Wii U’s GamePad which would allow gamers to perform a variety of Minecraft actions on it, such as crafting new objects, for example. Like we said it did make sense but unfortunately the rumor has proven to be nothing but a rumor, as Minecraft’s creator, Markus “Notch” Persson, has revealed that Mojang has no plans on porting Minecraft onto the Wii U anytime soon.

Responding to fan requests on Twitter to bring the game onto Nintendo’s platform, Persson was quoted as saying, “I agree a Wii U version would make sense, btw. The only reason for no current plans is we’ve got too much work already. I <3 Nintendo.” According to earlier rumors, the game was said to be in the works as Nintendo had reportedly sent several Wii U development kits to Mojang to help them port the game onto the Wii U console, but alas it looks like that will not be happening. Persson does not completely rule out the possibility, at least based on his statement, but for now Wii U gamers and Minecraft fans will have to be content with Minecraft that is available on other platforms, such as the PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and come 2014, the Xbox One and PS4 as well.
