Nintendo Wii U Expected To Dominate Christmas Sales, According To Play.com

Nintendo Wii U Expected To Dominate Christmas Sales, According To Play.comThe Nintendo Wii U, while launched with the best of intentions, did not take off the way Nintendo had envisioned, with retailers complaining about poor sales, and with newer consoles such as the Xbox One and PS4 overtaking the console’s lifetime sales in less than a month since their launch. There are a myriad of reasons why the Wii U is not doing well, with some claiming that the lack of blockbuster titles being one of them. In any case titles such as Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. are expected to arrive in 2014, which is why according to Play.com, they expect the Wii U to dominate the Christmas sales, which we can only presume is due to customers buying the console in anticipation of said titles.

According to the company, they have predicted that the Wii U will actually be more popular than the Xbox One and the PS4 consoles in Christmas, especially amongst children. They are basing this on Twitter analysis which found that the Wii U and the iPad are among the more talked about presents for children this Christmas holiday. Could Play.com be overly optimistic? We guess we will just have to wait and see, but in the meantime what do you guys think? Will the Wii U prove its popularity this Christmas holiday?

Xbox One And Sony PS4 Overtakes Wii U UK Lifetime Sales

Xbox One And Sony PS4 Overtakes Wii U UK Lifetime SalesThe Xbox One and Sony PS4 happen to be recently released consoles that have done pretty well over in the US, and from what we have gathered so far, the UK too, has proven to be a happy hunting ground for the Sony PS4. In fact, the PS4 launch sales in the UK have already passed the 250,000 mark, being the fastest selling console in UK history to boot. When you take that into consideration, the Wii U has moved a paltry 150,000 units after a single year in sales. As for the Xbox One, it has sold more than 170,000 units to date. Chart-Track themselves have confirmed that the Xbox One and PS4 have already outsold Wii U, but did not deliver the exact sales figures.

On a side note, I do wonder when will the mainstream media stop referring to the Xbox One and Sony PS4 as next generation consoles? How long after such consoles are launched before they are deemed to be of “this” generation? Just a question that I am throwing out for you to muse over. What do you think of the sales figures of the Wii U, and does this signal the beginning of the end of Nintendo in the long run? After all, the UK market is not to be scoffed at.

    What about the Wii U?

Everyone’s in a tizzy about the “new” console generation, conveniently forgetting that, market-wise, it was already here a year ago with the release of Nintendo’s Wii U. It isn’t as advanced technologically as the new Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox One, but the Wii U’s like the kid who still likes Ninja Turtles when everyone’s moved on to Power Rangers: They might not be as cool, but they’re still your classmate, and they’re still going to graduate with everyone else. Nintendo might seem a little square compared to Sony and Microsoft right now, but it still has the skills to succeed in school.

At launch, Nintendo sold out its entire initial allotment of 400,000 Wii U’s — which looked promising — but after the holidays, sales softened significantly and continued to slide. By E3, the situation wasn’t looking so good. Just a few months later, Nintendo announced a price cut of $50 for the console, reducing its profit on each unit sold. However, the price reduction also moved a lot of units, with the Wii U experiencing a 200 percent uptick in sales for the month of September.
