In about a week Microsoft is going to kill support for Windows XP, one of the most popular iterations of its operating system. It has been around for a long, long time and there are still a lot of users out there who haven’t updated to subsequent iterations. The company has been trying to raise awareness about the potential threats that may rise after support for Windows XP is stopped. It has even started offering a $100 discount to users who jump ship from Windows XP to Windows 8.1, the latest iteration. But it appears that those migrating prefer Windows 7 over Windows 8.

Once you’ve had the pleasure of using dual monitors it can be tough trying to go back to a single screen. There are, however, some things that Windows doesn’t handle so gracefully. A good example of this can be seen in one of our most popular articles where we walk you through how to change your primary monitor (the one where the Taskbar appears). There has got to be an easier way to do things like this, right?
There is, and it is with a free utility called Dual Monitor Tools. This is a collection of five standalone utilities that you can run whenever you want without going through a setup routine:
- Swap Screen uses hotkeys to simplify the process of handling windows in a multiple monitor setup. This includes features such as moving the current window to the next screen and minimising all windows on a single screen only. It also includes mouse/cursor control allowing you to lock the mouse onto a single screen or providing resistance to moving between screens.
- Dual Launcher allows you to launch your favourite applications with a few key strokes and to position them at pre-configured positions on any of your monitors.
- Dual Wallpaper simplifies the process of using images as wallpaper on multiple monitor setups. You can have a single image which is spread across all of your monitors, or you can have different images on each monitor, or if you have enough monitors, you could say have an image spread across 2 of your monitors with another image displayed on the third monitor.
- DisMon gives you some control over which monitors are disabled and which is the primary monitor when running another application.
- Dual Snap allows you to capture the image on the primary monitor and display it on the secondary monitor by the use of a user defined hotkey. This works with both normal window applications and most full screen applications like most games.
The DisMon utility is the program I want to highlight since it will let you easily select which monitor should be treated as the primary and which one as the secondary… that is the problem I mentioned above. This is the easiest way I’ve come across for addressing that.

Microsoft’s latest desktop operating system is Windows 8, but it seems that the platform might not be as well-received as Microsoft would like. In fact a recent ad and announcement by HP seemed to highlight that. Just last week, HP announced that they will be bringing back their Windows 7 PCs, which were apparently due to “popular demand”, suggesting that HP might not have as much faith in the Windows 8 operating system. To a certain extent it was also speculated that HP would be dropping Windows 8 in favor of the more popular Windows 7. Well the good news for those who are worried that this might be a “step back” for HP, fret not because HP has since clarified their latest move on their blog.
According to HP, “Whether you’ve been reading the tech news blogs – or just saw an ad on our hp shopping page, you’ve probably been asking yourself, “Why is HP selling Windows 7 PCs in a Windows 8 world?” The answer is dead simple: Choice. We like giving our customers the option to get the computer that’s right for them.” HP goes on to clarify that they are not, by any long shot, dropping Windows 8. “We want people to be happy with our computers – whichever option they choose – BUT WE ARE NOT DROPPING WINDOWS 8.” So there you have it folks, if you wanted a Windows 8 HP PC, you can, but at the same time for those who still prefer Windows 7, that option is available to you as well.

I know a bunch of people who customize the appearance of their desktop, but many don’t know that Windows 7 supports themes that rotate between desktop backgrounds and automatically adjusts the color of the Aero interface. The thing most users don’t know is that Microsoft actually has a site that offers Windows 7 themes. The themes are broken up into various categories including holidays/seasons, landscapes, automotive, and much more. In all there are about 180 available including a theme for Angry Birds.
If you’re running an older version of Windows that doesn’t support themes you can always jump on over to Microsoft’s desktop background page that includes over 200 high-quality backgrounds you can grab. Many of them are really amazing and are definitely worth browsing if you haven’t done so already.

Last week we saw a revamped version of Paint in the third Windows 7 milestone. At the time there weren’t any other screenshots available, but it looks as though someone who got their hands on Windows 7 M3 has decided to post some screenshots showing off more of the enhancements.
Here are six of their screenshots of the new calculator, WordPad, Paint, slightly reorganized Windows Explorer Sidebar, better theme selection, and a different display management window:
I’m actually happy to see that Microsoft is polishing up the operating system, and look forward to some of the future enhancements they’ll be adding to the operating system. Unfortunately we don’t know what the under-the-hood improvements are like yet.
